View Full Version : Chapman's first start of spring

02-28-2013, 04:47 PM
1st inning: ground out 2B, pop up 2B, ground out to pitcher
2nd inning: ground out SS, ground out SS, strikeout swinging

Well done, I'd say. Apparently he was using tons of off speed stuff and even threw some in the 70's. Imagine how devastating that must be when you have to defend against a 102 mph fastball...

Great outing. He needs to continue to work the off speed all spring training. We all know he has the fastball, time to perfect the slider and changeup.

Where did the report of off-speed stuff in the 70s come from?

Cause if true.....

Is chapman throwing a change-up below 80 or is this another "mystery" pitch?

From John Fay's twitter account:

Easy 1-2-3 inning for Chapman. Two groundouts and soft liner. Threw mostly off speed stuff. Fastest was 94. Slowest 76. #Reds #cincienquirer

Hilarious... Freaking hilarious...

This is great. Chapman should only touch 100+ when he needs it. Otherwise keep it in the upper 90's and be happy. Good start to the spring. Hope he keeps it going.

Really encouraging start. Basically picked up where he left off last spring when he was also looking great as a starter.

Though I think his biggest issue may be maintaining focus for 6 or 7 innings in a row and we won't see how he handles that for a while.

Great to hear! I know a lot of people are saying don't mess with a good thing, but if Chapman can translate his lights-out quality to the rotation... drool.

There will be some big crowds on the days he pitches.

If he can consistently throw his #2 and #3 pitches for strikes .... he is going to be a VERY RICH MAN. ( not that he isn't already )

Control will be an issue for him and he proved its something he is getting good at. Most guys struggle with control to start spring. Chapman looked great. Excitment is boiling over.

Hopefully this isn't like the Daniel Bard experiment where he tried to pace himself by dialing back the speed to 93-96, caught Steve Blass disease, and started throwing pitches to the screen.
