This season is going to be a much tougher dogfight than last year was. I think people are way too overconfident going in to this season.

Everything went right for the Reds last year. They drastically outperformed their pythag. It is not going to happen again this year.

The Reds will face a little more adversity this year in terms of injuries and players not having career years. Frazier and Ludwick will disappoint. The Reds won't have the Astros to beat up on this year. The Cubs are getting better. The Brewers are improved. The landscape is tougher this year than last.

The Cardinals will take the division with 94 wins.

Get ready for a six-month battle. This season is not going to be a cake walk -- it is going to be a war.

I usually run projections for the players before doing this.... but I am going to be lazy this year. 92 wins and win the division by at least 7 games.

I'm going with 88-74 and 2nd place behind STL. As with many games last year, our offense will be MIA, with the biggest non-factor being Ludwick......opponents will pitch around Votto all year, giving him the most walks in MLB. He will get frustrated later in the season and his average will fall to around .285-.290, having to swing at bad balls to try to get a hit. Now if Jocketty has the guts to pull a trade early enough in the season, like Bailey, Corcino, and Lutz to Minnesota for Willingham, or the same 3 to Miami for Stanton (preferred), we will win the division and go deep in the postseason.
If not, it will be a frustrating year with Dusty getting the boot.

Since then there have been 15 seasons, meaning 14 seasons where we can compare how teams did in the year they won the division with how they did in the year after. The average N.L. Central Champ won 94.3 games. In the following year that number dipped to 86.4. This is a dropoff of 7.9 games. In 12 of the 14 seasons there was a decrease in the number of wins. In 6 of the 14 seasons this was a double-digit decline. The Cubs bucked the odds twice, improving 1 game and 12 games in two of their three division-winning years. Teams have to have a lot of things go right to win a division. So a dropoff is not altogether unexpected.

I predicted 90 wins last year when my friend and I were predicting this season. I chalked up the decline in wins to the Astros leaving the division. Of course, I predicted that we win the NL Central too.
