Locke's a guy who won't throw a strike if you don't make him. The D-backs were smart to work the count.

Sveum benches Castro for lazy play.

Bases loaded with 1 out and M. Carpenter pops it up to short left. As soon as castro camps under it infield fly is called and Castro makes the catch. He then puts his head down and starts walking around like he isn't holding a live ball. Jay takes off from third and scores on a close play.

Sveum is tired of the act from Castro i guess

Cubs look like they could be a power down the road, but, IMO, if they stick with Castro at SS instead of moving him elsewhere and going with one of their other kids there, it will be a huge chink in their armor. The guy is a horrible SS. He's young and may improve, but he'll need to improve alot to be a winning SS IMO. I'd much rather have Cozart there.

It is amazing the Cardnals went from such legands as Caray and Buck to the guys they have now. You'd think they'd make an effort to get quality guys just to continue the great tradition they have.

Pirates with a whole lot of extra inning games of late. After that 16 inning loss, they now board a plane for San Diego, who plays above .500 ball at home. I keep waiting for the Pirates relievers arms to fall off with how much they have been used, though Hurdle did use one pitcher for 6 innings to save his pen a lot of work.

But I'm not going to complain about 6 pitchers needing to go for the D backs.

Gonna have to be Arizona that catches them. I dream of somehow winning the division and getting Arizona in the NLDS.

Watching Red Sox/Yankees-- seems like the pitcher is throwing at A-Rod-- it's getting ugly!

Benches are clearing...

ARod is hit, shouting match with the umpire...

Warnings issued to both sides, but nothing else for now.

Curious-- Joe Girardi ejected, Red Sox pitcher and manager stay in.

I hate A-Rod as much as the next guy, but Yankees have to respond here and drill Pedrioa (or more) every time he steps in there tonight. Make 'em throw your whole team out if necessary.

Cedric
08-18-2013, 08:45 PM
Dempster is a complete idiot. He's the only guy in the world that could make Arod look decent in a situation.

Does it make him feel tough to throw at Arod? Does he aim for every PED cheat or just the famous one's? It's absolutely the stupidest thing I've seen in awhile in this game.

I don't care for Arod either.

The Yankees will probably just win and Dempster will get an earful from his manager.

I think he was incredibly selfish. He thought of himself and how this would make him a fan favorite in Boston.

I'm not naive enough to think he truly cares about how Arod hurt baseball.

Dempster's approach in Arod's 2nd AB was extremely weak I thought. Why is he working him outside on every pitch there? I'm not saying you plunk him again but don't be scared to work the inner third.

Agreed. As crucial as the Pirates pen had been to their success, it's really hard to see them being a WS threat with the amount of innings they threw in the first half plus sll of the extremely long ballgames they've played since. Their fanbase can't wait for Sept callups.

I don't know if there is any validity to this, but the general consensus is that if Westbrook does not have a good outing tonite he will be dropped to long relief. That will be long relief for Card fans, who are totally fed up with him, and the way MM continues to use him.

Edit: Lynn is starting, not Westy, I see. the red hot Jon Jay leading off.... Kolton Wong Gone batting 2nd with Carpenter on the pine. Wong has has done little at the plate so far, but Kosma may be losing his SS job soon to Descalso.

Yea, Westbrook couldn't make it out of the 5th inning. Although Yadi did start, but he has a rare 0-4 currently. Beltran & Craig are doing most of the damage so far. There is still hope though.

I just saw that. The fact that someone was hitting 1.000 in the box score kinda got my attention. :O)

The irony is, it's because of bullpen problems that he was brought up. So, here's the situation. Alex Presley was optioned to AAA to make room for Andrew Lambo and try him out in right field (he's having a big year between AA and AAA). But, due to the bullpen being seriously overworked in the last week or so, they had to option Lambo to add a pitcher (Kris Johnson, and then Ryan Reid). As you know, when you option someone, they must stay at AAA for at least ten days before they can be brought back. Neither Presley nor Lambo were down for ten days.

Both Starling Marte and Jose Tabata are injured, but neither serious enough to go on the DL, which would allow either Presley or Lambo to be recalled. So, the situation is that they are short in the outfield and in the bullpen. Thanks to decent starts from Liriano and Burnett over the last two days, as well as Kris Johnson working six iinnings in relief on Sunday against Arizona, the bullpen is somewhat back to normal, but they were still short an outfielder, specifically someone who could play center in an emergency. So...enter Felix Pie.

I don't think it will be locked up. Favorable, but not locked.

This is because while the DBacks play seven with the Dodgers, the Reds play six with the Pirates.

And the Pirates may need those games a lot more than L.A. needs theirs.

Well, I'm just more confident. The series against the Cards and Dodgers will be rough. I'm less concerned about playing the Pirates. They're fading (6-11 in their last 17 games). They were 70-44. Let's see if the Septemeber call ups can improve the team's ability to put together a string of victories.

After losing two straight series to the Cardinals, winning the division has gotten a lot tougher. Holy Schnikes!

A couple weeks ago on one of these threads they were talking about Mike Trout's speed and that his additional 20 lbs have him a step slower.

Watching MLB Network he just hit ball to Yunel Escobar, fielded it cleanly and Trout beat it out fairly easily. I timed it at 3.65 seconds from the RH batters box (Drew Stubbs was typically 3.72-3.75...with an occasional 3.68-3.71)....then on a line drive 2 hopper to the CF near LCF he went 1st to 3rd.

It may be the world's smallest sample size but holy moses that was the best back to back example of speed by 1 player I've seen in a long long time.

Kershaw just gave up 11 hits and 5 ER in 5 inn in Colorado

Greg Reynolds game is looking better and better.

That Colorado offense will be a load to deal with next season if they stay healthy.

They are tough to beat in that park. Its almost like the flip side of trying to beat the Astros in the Dome.

Pirates take a 3-2 lead in the 8th, but the Brew Crew tie it right back up in the bottom of the 8th with Segura rbi single. 3-3 heading to the 9th.

The Diamondbacks lost again, so the Reds are now 7.5 games up on the next closest competitor (Washington). Arizona is now 8 games behind the Reds.

Yeah, now work on getting down as close to .500 and revel in a winning season. Very disappointing to beat the Redbirds the last two nights and not pick up any games on 1st place. Grrr.

Pirates have 7 with Cubs, 4 with Padres and six with Reds after the Cards & Ranger series. I sure hope the Rangers do them some damage because, for the Buccos, after that series, it gets real easy outside of the Reds the rest of the way. Reds may need to take 5 of 6 verses Bucs and at least split these last two with Cards. Still want the Bucs to take 2 of 3 in Saint Loo and hope the Reds can beat them face to face. Seems the best scenario. After the Pirates the Cards play no one of note, really, except they get the Rox in Denver. The Reds face a tough test and need to get hot and play out their minds for the rest of the season.

I love how Donaldson was smiling as he was going to make the play. There have been some great defensive plays this year.

23 games left. For the REDs to win the division outright, I'd say they need to win 15-16, to finish with 93-94 wins.

And that's hoping Pit goes 12-12. With 11 games vs the Cubs and Pads? Not likely.

I don't know. I don't think they match up well against those two. In any case, 12-12 is certainly not outside the realm of possibilities, especially if the REDs can take the head to head series.

BP has the REDS division odds at 17%. Sounds about right to me. Not likely, but not a long shot either.

I am guessing we go 13-10 fairly easily. It all depends on if we can do better than that.
