Really looking forward to this game while the rest of the civilized world is glued to whether or not RGIII can still run.

I'd be worried if they were on the road but thankfully they get a series yet at home. Just a decent start by Bronson and they'll be ok.

That looked like a pretty bad hop to me. Haven't seen a replay yet though.

It was hit 12 inches away from his left foot. If he gets in front of it, even if he doesn't glove it cleanly he blocks it with his body and it's an easy out. That's my beef with him. He hasn't been fundamentally sound on D.

As I said in another post, it was a foot away from him. You have to get in front of that ball. He had plenty of time to do so.

It should still be an error IMO. He did not even attempt to get in front of that ball. Played it to the side when he DID have time to play it better.

It was routine all the way. It short-hopped, but Joey stepped to the side again, as he's done more and more this year, making a routine play more difficult.

I didn't see the play. Are the Cubs cubbing already? Can someone describe it?

Runner missed the go home sign and stopped at 3rd with the batter rounded first a little -- BP got behind him and the cut-off throw came back to him -- run down & 3rd out

I didn't see the play. Are the Cubs cubbing already? Can someone describe it?

3rd base coach clearly waving the runner home. Runner stops at 3B bag and acts like he didn't see the signal. Runner at first got caught in a rundown trying to advance on the throw.

_Sir_Charles_
09-09-2013, 07:21 PM
I didn't see the play. Are the Cubs cubbing already? Can someone describe it?

Single to Bruce, man on second. He's being waved around but he's looking at Bruce and not the 3rd base coach. Just freezes in his tracks like a deer in headlights. Hung the batter out to dry after rounding 1st. Snap throw to 1st gets behind Navarro and he's out in a rundown...all the while, Valbuena (at third) is still just standing there. :O)

New York Red
09-09-2013, 07:23 PM
It looked like Jay was in his throwing motion as the runner got to third. He would have been out at home by a mile. The ball was back in the infield before the batter reached first base.

No, that I don't agree with. It was hit quite hard and had a bad hop. He didn't step out of the way of it...he simply didn't step INTO the way of it like he should have. Not a routine play...but still a play that should've been made.

I hope the coaches realize that Todd's ground ball percentage is up ten points from last season. It could easily be a mechanical thing in his swing. If he could elevate some of these hard hit grounders, he'd be more effective.

It was literally one foot away from him. He chose not to get in front of it.

It was drilled down the line. He had time to move his glove towards the ball. If he had spent his time instead "getting in front of it", he likely wouldn't have had time to also move his glove into position.

It was drilled down the line. He had time to move his glove towards the ball. If he had spent his time instead "getting in front of it", he likely wouldn't have had time to also move his glove into position.

In that case, he would have blocked it off his chest or stomach, picked it up and thrown it to Arroyo covering. As hard as it was hit, he might have even had time to get to first himself.

It doesn't bother me at all for Votto to make an error. It bothers me that he was lazy and didn't get in front of the ball. If he takes one step to his left to get in front of it and then butchers it, that's fine with me. Errors happen. That was a mental error, which are inexcusable to me.

I think the Reds have a tough call to make about Hanigan next season. He's a fine defender, these pitchers like him, occasionally gets a key hit.

But the Reds need to get much more offense out of catcher. One way to accomplish that is to get a better hitter to share the position with Mes.

But he has so many speeds, arm slots, breaking balls, it's hard to

Understand, appreciate and love how these Reds approach games with D, best-in-baseball pitching and just-what's-necessary offense.

And, not a lick of worry about this game at this point.

All said, it'd be really nice to see the guys put up 5 or more in the first 5 or 6 innings. They've done it plenty before and the Cubs aren't that great however well Wood has pitched. Maybe tomorrow for that.

For tonight, let's start hammering the Cubs' pen and put this one into the W column. Can hit the gas pedal now.
