Verducci is basically saying one manager is no different than another. That they are basically by the book (not The Book) cookie cutter managers who are beholden to the organizational philosophy and won't deviate from that.

Interesting article.

This sentence from the piece is amazing itself:

"From 1990 to 2012 the number of six-out saves dropped from 320 to 19."

With all the similarities, the differentiating factor between managers is their ability to sell and hold players accountable.

Just going off your comment, I wonder how much relief pitching in general changed from 1970 to 1990, using the same amount of time Verducci is using for his closer comparison.

Incredibly, staffs of 9 were a norm for years and the numbers really show how much burden went on 2-3 guys instead of 5-6

Thanks WOY. I guess when I saw the comment it reeked of cherry picking data in order to prove a point. The game of baseball is evolving and has been evolving each and every year. I don't think a manager is any more or less important than it was 20-40-60 years ago.
