vBulletin 4 Upgrade Coming

The site has been running vBulletin version 3.8 for numerous years, and now that vBulletin 5 has been released, we feel it's time to make the switch to version 4. We have not yet purchased a license for version 5, and we feel it would prudent to make an incremental upgrade to version 4 before (potentially) upgrading to the latest version. Despite its age, version 3.8 continues to be patched and supported by vBulletin, but the site is long overdue for an upgrade.

I want to caution that the upgraded version will likely look and feel different than what you've probably become accustomed to over the years, and some of the custom software addons we've implemented with 3.8 will have to be reimplemented with version 4 (though I suspect some of this functionality comes standard with version 4). As far as the time frame for the upgrade, we fully intend to have everything up and running by Opening Day with preferably at least a week of running the new software before the games begin so any kinks can be worked out. To avoid any potential problems with the upgrade process, I will have to shut the board down during the upgrade, but I do not anticipate it taking too long, and I will try to provide as much of a heads up as possible. It will most likely be on a weekend afternoon.

Thanks for everyone's patience; I ran into some unexpected issues during the upgrade, but we appear to be past them. I'm sure you've noticed that things look much less "RedsZone-like" and more much "vBulletin-like". I'll work on customizing the appearance back to how it was (or as close as I can since the old vB 3 style is incompatible with vB 4), as well as reinstalling any custom functionality we had installed in vB 3 that doesn't exist in vB 4. The most important thing was to get the site back up and running, and it appears to be.

Please post any problems you encounter here.

This is very much still a work in progress, but I've created a style ("RedsZone") that should look much more similar to what you're used to than the standard vBulletin style does. If it hasn't already switched over, you can change the style in the dropdown in the bottom left part of each page.

You're not blind - I found out it is only enabled by default for admins. I enabled it, but vB makes it clear it can put a fair amount of load on the server, so I'll have to monitor that. I enabled it only for members (i.e. not guests) to minimize the server load.

I've read the instructions numerous times on how to set a different favicon than the default icon (i.e. the old "RZ" icon), and it's not working for me despite clearing my cache, cookies, deleting the bookmark and re-adding it, etc. Before I waste any more time on it, I want to confirm it's not just on my end.

First off, I want to say that we greatly appreciate everyone's patience during this transition, as well as your input. Unfortunately, things have obviously not gone as smoothly as I would've liked, as I had no idea that the styles / skins we had in our old version (vB 3) would not convert over to vB 4, so I'm effectively left trying to recreate them as best as possible from scratch. The behind the scenes piece is vastly different than it was in vB 3, so this is completely new to me, and I'm having to learn as I go along. I am making note of your feedback (namely the desire for a black style), and I will get to that ASAP, but my primary priority continues to be getting the standard style back in order (i.e. the blue removed) since that's the one the vast majority of users had set. If I don't figure out what variables need to be changed in order to produce the desired results for the standard style, I'll never be able to recreate the other styles.

In short, please continue to provide feedback but also understand I'm doing the best I can to learn what I need to know in my free time. Thanks again for your continued patience.

I know there's been quite a bit of demand for a dark theme, so I threw something together ("Black RedsZone") in five minutes in case you'd prefer that over the status quo. I can already see that some of the text colors and button colors need to be modified in order to be visible (that's a big part of my challenge with the standard style), so it's far from perfect, and I'm not going to do anything else with it until I'm done with my primary task, but it's out there if you want to check it out.

I've always gotten them since the site starting using ads. my blocker stops about 80% of them (it informs me when it blocks).

checking my blocker's record, one is AdSense (from July), the other 66 are AdClick and MediaMoves (which appears to be a latino news website?).:confused:

GIK and I both tried testing this with advertisements enabled and using multiple browsers (with block popups disabled) and are still unable to replicate the issue of popup windows coming from this site. Good question. For some reason, vBulletin removed one of the advertisement positions we used in vBulletin 3.8 (directly above the Quick Reply box), and the embedded in the last post was the closest available match to what we had before. I am trying to code a custom solution to put the advertisement back where it was in 3.8 and not embedded within a post (because I agree that it's overly intrusive there), but until if and when I can find a way to do that, we need to have some coverage towards the bottom of the page.

Chat is now once again installed and a link appears on the navigation bar (to the right) of "What's New?" and "Forum". Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be integration support between the chat program and vBulletin 4, so we've lost the single sign-on ability I believe we had prior to the upgrade. You can log in using your vBulletin / RedsZone credentials.

I'm also finding that if I have a thread open and another tab in my browser, that if I'm above two tabs and reply with quote, the sessions crashes. however, I think that is far more likely on my end and the dial-up level "high speed" that's my only option. :(

Possibly - what page did the functionality you're referring to appear under? The search page?

I figured out how to restore it on users' individual profiles (under "About Me"), but I haven't been able to find how to restore it under the search page. I'll ask for assistance with this and restore it if it's possible.

I made quite a few changes to the Black RedsZone style - please let me know your thoughts (as well as the "RedsZone" style). I believe I've figured out how to modify most of the user interface, so if there's something that doesn't look right (i.e. the text color is the same as the background color, which makes it invisible unless highlighted) or you think something should be tweaked, please let me know.

I'd love to be re-enable this, but the problem is the amount of server load it puts on the site during games (which is our most popular time). Unfortunately, upgrading to a new version won't alleviate this issue.

This is very strange; it worked for me yesterday, and today it's doing the same thing before I fixed it (blank screen). I'll look into installing a new chat program.

Hey, Boss, I just wanted to let you know I'm no longer getting all the pop-up ads. I actually stopped using RZ for a week or two because it was so bad, but I checked back in a few days ago and all is well. Have returned several times since and still no ad issues. :thumbup:

A chat system is active once again. It's a different system from the old one (which is incompatible with vBulletin), and it's not very customizable (particularly the colors), but most importantly, it seems to be functional. You can access it by clicking the "Chat" button at the top of every page below the site's logo.

On the old chat room, I could AIM-style warn people and if they got over a certain percentage their keyboard would shock them. Does the new chat have a similar function?
