If Votto is going to continue on the active roster with many days off, the Reds might want to consider adding a player who can play first base and hit decently. Can also play other positions.

Pena hasn't hit much lately, he's not the best candidate in the world for that spot.

Why is the team at bat automatically punished for it? Should home fans always reach over when the opposing team hits one near the fence so it becomes an automatic out?

Kc61
07-06-2014, 01:49 PM
Like someone said, it's not an assumption he would have caught it. I don't think Shafer would have caught it.

But Shafer wasn't given the full shot to catch it since the fan interfered with him during the play. So it's an out.

I thought a double would be a fair ruling. Santiago denied what would have been a HR, Schafer denied the chance for an unlikely but possible catch. But of course you have to go by the rules and they aren't about fairness, c'est la vie

757690
07-06-2014, 01:57 PM
Crush14 sent me the rule via PM. Here it is:

Here is the rule: When a spectator or other person not associated with one of the teams (including such staff as bat boys or ball girls) alters play in progress, it is spectator interference, colloquially called fan interference. It is worth noting that the latter is also (incorrectly) used to refer to fan obstruction – for instance a spectator running onto the field and tackling a baserunner. The ball becomes dead, and the umpire will award any bases or charge any outs that, in his judgment, would have occurred without the interference.

Such interference often occurs when a spectator in the first row of seats reaches onto the field to attempt to grab a fair or foul fly ball. If the umpire judges that the fielder could have caught the ball over the field (i.e., the ball would have not crossed over the plane of the wall), he will rule the batter out on spectator interference. Also, the spectator who commits interference is usually ejected from the stadium. Note that spectators are allowed to catch a ball that is in play when the ball has broken the plane of the spectators' side of the wall. The area where both fielders and spectators are legally allowed to catch the ball is colloquially called no man's land.

Key part of the bolded part: the fielder could have caught the ball, not would have caught the ball. Umps got it right, according to the letter of the rule.

kaldaniels
07-06-2014, 01:58 PM

Only other point is that it looked like the right fielder had already missed it. Looked like the ball was beyond his glove. If so, it wasn't potentially catchable. It was already out of his reach.

But the replay official saw it differently, apparently. Was close for sure.

Larkin Fan

Every flyball he hits is a victory for the defense. Someone needs to tell him to kill worms. IMHO, his upside is Franklin Gutierrez without the power and his OBP is going to depend upon his BABIP which is going to depend upon his legs.

I find it funny when pitchers still think BP is a threat to steal. He hasn't been one for a few years (1 steal this entire season). Yet, Smith threw over there four times. Hehe. Another case of a pitcher being consumed with a baserunner and not focusing on the hitter. We'll take it.

Way to take advantage, Jay. Hopefully this is the start of one of his patented hot streaks.
