Straily starting for the Reds, Joe Ross starts for Washington.

Things to know about this game

Ross has never faced the Reds but is 5-3 with a 2.75 ERA in nine starts vs. NL Central teams during his career.

Straily has been one of the Reds' more dependable starters in 2016, but he's coming off his roughest outing of the year. On Monday vs. the Cubs in an 11-8 loss, he allowed a career-high seven earned runs and nine hits over 3 2/3 innings.

Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips has not hit a home run since May 7, a span of 48 games that is the longest stretch of his career.

With Duvall in the lineup BP bats 3rd/4th....but take out one of your top sluggers and put in a guy who doesn't have it yet and bat BP 6th

The biggest problem with any lineup the Reds can throw out there is they currently only have one player who can avoid outs at a good rate.

Bullpen definitely needs work (understatement of the century), but their horridness is beyond the basic realm of explanation. Maybe better coaching would tell them to keep the ball down or something.

You keep saying the Reds are doing nothing because they aren't converting minor league starters to relievers. But they are already doing it with Lorenzen and Iglesias, and they just drafted a bunch of relievers this year with several more interesting ones (Herget, Chacin, Weiss) in the pipeline. I'd feel better when everyone associated with the dumpster fire performance of this year is gone.

Right, this is what I'm saying. It's not giving the players or the front office an excuse, the players should be cut and the FO criticized. But ultimately the very job of these coaches is to have their players be successful, and that clearly isn't happening.

I think you need to start new altogether. Next year I only want to see 2-3 guys from this year (Lorenzen, Iglesias, assuming they both stay there) in the bullpen, an arm or two added in free agency, and a whole new coaching staff.

They were forced into Lorenzen and Iglesias by injury. And it's not just failing to convert starters. It's a bullpen that all year has been focused on stop gaps.

Get Wandy Peralta - currently a reliever - to the Reds. Get Moscot as a long man. Move Chacin to AAA. Convert Romano to the pen, he isn't a successful starter. Use Sampson.

If you're not ready to have a good bullpen, at least act like you might be developing one.

The pitchers are there, the Reds just don't prioritize this important need.

Good, Reds in front.

Building a pen is partly trial and error. Look at Josh Smith, he finally seems to be a useful reliever. He was like the 15th guy they tried.

At this pace the Reds will have to acquire relievers in trades and free agency. Because the pace of development is too slow.

The answers to the Reds pen are currently in the Reds rotation (along with Iglesias and Lorenzen when they get completely right). The answers to the rotation are still in AAA and AA. When those guys are ready the pen will improve. They can't move those prospects to the pen yet. They need them to start. Add Lamb, Finnegan and Strailey to Lorenzen, Cingrani and Iglesias and the pen will be fine. Need Bailey, Stephenson and Garrett in the rotation first. Wood, Ohendorf, and the lesser guys are just filler IMO. They may keep one as a mop-up guy down the road, but that's probably Moscot.

A few notes from LF (where I was sitting).

The Reds offense needs to keep going when it has a lead, they seem to rest on it.

Ben Revere saved a tons of runs - just bad luck for the good guys on that.

Strailly is a good bunter but a terrible hitter.

Price needs to anticipate his pitchers better. Strailly should have came out after 7 and Wood should have been gone after 1 batter - if you can't throw strikes then you can't pitch for my team.

Bryce Harper, the future Yankee RF (as those of us living in the Nation's Capital call him) has crashed back to earth. His fielding miscue was straight out of little league.

By the end of the game last night, there were as many Reds fans left as Nats fans.
