That inning ended early thanks to horrible umpiring once again. Two straight pitches to Billy were clearly outside, both were called strikes. Instead of 2-0, it's 0-2. Billy then has to protect the plate and pops out. Votto then hits into a DP. If Billy would have had a 2-0 count, I bet he would have either bunted Cozart over or perhaps even drawn a walk.

When the hell is MLB going to use replay for balls/strikes? It would take 5 seconds. They do this in tennis without any issues. Each batter should get 2 challenges per game. It's the year 2016 and we're still dealing with this human error nonsense.

Disco's fastball usually 93 tonight ... but he touched 95 at least once.

Am I wrong, or is his velo up a tick this year? I don't remember him cranking 95 MPH fastballs last year.

That was impressive. He kind of "pivoted" while on his knees and threw a strike to first from his knees.

I was just glad it wasn't another double play off a hard shot from Joey. Joey has ripped the ball both times with nothing to show for it.

Instead of swinging, he should have been dreaming of OBP or something. ;)

I rewatched it and if he's busting he can make the play most likely just before it gets to the bag but then makes a different play if his momentum takes him into the runner causing strange footwork around the base.

It was a strangely timed play...he chose not to bust it and catch it before the base, my problem is that he didn't square his body up in case it hit the base but instead played it off to the side.

I was the main one on him last week on the passed ball....so I'm not a huge defender of his....but I did watch it again before making my claim.

They had to treat it like a bad hop, which it was. (Though it was another of those mental mistakes we talked about last week, because Votto should have charged the ball.)

I would submit that's a rule that needs to be change. If a defensive player makes a mental "error" that allows a batter to reach base who otherwise would have been out ... why can't that go down in the official scoring as an "error"?

If the reasoning is "Because that's the way MLB has always done it" ... that's atrocious reasoning.

If the reasoning is "Because that's the way MLB has always done it" ... that's atrocious reasoning.

My guess is that the reason is because official scorekeeping is subjective by nature, and so they don't want it to be even more subjective. So they set some guidelines, like no errors on bad hops or balls hit into the lights or sun, or there had to be a reasonable chance on the ball for an error to be committed. It is unfortunate, because sometimes we see some brutal defense that is so bad you can't even give it an error. But there is no perfect system.

Would you be in favor of charging an error to Disco for throwing to first base for the easy out and failing to get the lead runner on the bunt when the opportunity appeared to be there?

Ironman92
07-15-2016, 08:51 PM
He could have chosen to tag the batter-runner, though.

I know....I would like to see that same play with him busting to try and beat that ball to the bag with his glove. Just see how it played out. I agree it's THE play but I'm not convinced he gets to that ball before it hits bag with the necessary footwork to make the play.

Where we all agree...I hate his effort and then his playing the ball off to the side (could argue lack of effort twice on that play)

That would be a tough one, since the batter was thrown out at first on the bunt. Unlike Votto's play where an out was not registered. I see your point, I just think there's a better way to do it than the current system. Too many clear "errors" are not ruled as errors.

Hasn't exactly been a Tony Fernandez adjustment from SS to 3B for Suarez. He's an error machine.

I really want him moved to the OF when Bruce is traded. There's no way he's not athletic enough to handle it, and I really think he's carrying his defensive worries to the plate with him, causing him to press and drag his game down all around.

I think if you put him in LF (preferably) or RF (guess it could work if he has a SS/3B's arm) and just let him focus much more on hitting than worrying about the error he made in the last half inning, I think he could go back to being a ~.280 guy with an OBP around .330-.340, combined with the extra power he's showing this season, I could see him being a 25 HR guy.

That plays. And would solve one big lineup question.

A lot of if's there, but I would like to see if he could do it. I'm pretty well convinced at this point he's just not an IF.

He's not great and never will be. But at the very least, he's an average starting catcher, and a really good backup (if Mes can come back strong next year -- I'm not giving up on him). Barnhart is still very young at 25.
