I almost hate to admit this, but: When I went to Starbucks today, my coffee was *waiting* for me on the counter. How crazy is that?!

The guy who waited on me said "You want your usual, right? I saw you coming around the corner, so I've already made it for you."

I know Starbucks is a huge evil corporation, but this one little franchise RAWKS in my opinion!

I am going to a bar BY MYSELF to watch the Kansas-Nevada bball game...
I used to go down to my favorite watering hole to watch the Reds or Celtics play when I lived in the dorms when I was going to college. We didn't have cable in the dorms and if the Reds or Celtics were on TBS or WGN I'd just walk down to the Hill and have a seat at the bar and watch the game. One time this foreign beer salesman was in there and he let me sample several of his products. :) Then he gave me a Grolsch key chain which was really cool cause it was a ceramic Grolsch bottle top. Another time I was down there I got into a conversation with this one guy who told me stories about when Harry Carey and Jimmy Piersall used to do White Sox games.

starbucks isn't evil. i just don't like their coffee or they cd samplers.

they are a good employer. (they pay health care if you work 20 hours a week, better pay than most other coffee houses)

the newspaper here did a study of the number of independent coffee houses in portland before and after the start of starbucks. there were less than 10 then, over 90 now. they created "coffee culture" in america IMO.

I got a really cool e-mail when I got home from work. I found a message board for Northern Iowa athletics about a week ago. Somebody started a thread on there about how they were having problems listening to the games on line. I've been having problems all fall but I didn't have any last year. I tried to listen to a little bit of a coach's show when I started back to work after I broke my ankle and I didn't have any problems. So I posted a message on there about how I've been having problems and I didn't think anything would come of it. So tonight I get an e-mail from the guy who is in charge of these on-line broadcasts and he wants to know why I'm having problems and how he can help. He gave me his number and name and wanted to call me to help me out. He probably won't be able to help but that is good customer service. The message board isn't officially affiliated with the university but they must do some surfing on there. That not only RAWKS, that hella RAWKS! :)

Took a walk at lunch today …

It was a beautiful day for baseball … mid 70s, light breeze blowing across the field … white puffy clouds rolling by blocking the intensity of the afternoon sun …

We were all sitting in the stands, cracking peanuts … well, let’s making it popcorn this time.

Runner on second, Adam Dunn steps to the plate, bottom of the eighth of a scoreless game … Kerry Wood on the mound.

Here’s the pitch …

Just got back from the hospital. I'm a grandfather. Yikes.

My granddaughter was born around 4:30 am, 6 pounds, 14 oz, 20 inches long.

She shows some propensity for going to the right, so I may have been premature in thinking she'd be a pitcher. May be a shortstop.

It may be a little too early to tell, but I'll keep you informed on the testing I have planned.

So my oldest boxer hurt her leg the other night going a little too hard with the younger dogs at the dog park. So to give her a respite, I took my youngest puppy, who is usually in her shadow 24/7, over to my parents house across town for a week so that she could go easy without having Sophie egg her on to play all the time.

So my mom sends me these pictures from her digital, telling me that Sophie, my youngest, is enamored with my's moms new lab/rot mix new puppy, and won't leave her alone. They are now apparently inseperable.

I think I may have to fight to get her back over to my house again

I'm the same way. Nobody can buy me sporting goods equipment or electronics stuff, 'cause I always research it myself and I always know exactly what I want.

So, I usually get clothes, which is a good thing. My wife always has picked my favorite stuff, far better than I'd do for myself in that department.

Adults in my family don't buy each other Christmas gifts. But my mom always pays for a year of garbage pick-up and about $2000 towards the principal on our house. Does the same for my sister. I think more than a Christmas gift it is a payback for the lawn mowing, tile laying, carpet cleaning, shrub pruning, mulch spreading, snow clearing, etc., she gets throughout the year.

If the second teevee is cable-ready, all you need is a Y-Splitter and some more coax cable.

I'm pretty sure. Though I wouldn't mortgage my tennis-shoes on it.

You'd actually want two new cables. What you want to do is take the feed cable that's coming out of the wall, disconnect it from your primary set, and attach the y-splitter on the end. Then run your first new coax cable to your primary set and run the secondary cable down to your new set.

That's what I thought. I've got an old TV that I'm sure isn't cable-ready (the spousal unit had it in her apartment pre-Roy and we're coming up on 20 yrs.) that I was thinking about using.

But TVs are so cheap now and I need just a little one. I may just go buy one for <$100. Or put one on my Xmas list. Now there's a thought.

So I have long heard that Preparation H would reduce bags under the eyes. I just googled it and seems that just isn't true. I don't know if I am sad cause I thought it would be an easy fix for the luggage I am carrying around since I have been tired or I am relieved that I don't have to actually buy Preparation H.

Decided the jaded, world-weary, wise-existentialist look just isn't for you, anymore? :D

My grandmother used to say that every wrinkle she had was an experience, every scar a memory, and that she wouldn't trade away a single one of them to look young again.

Just an anecdote; it has nothing to do with your beauty. :D

I don't have any wrinkles. One of oily skins benefits.

I just hate the bags. They make me look so tired. And yes, I am TIRED. Really really tired.

But I don't want the whole world to know that just by looking at me. I want the chance to have them ask me how it's going and then I can complain about how tired I am. :)

And believe me, I'm not worried about beauty. Never been pretty, never will be. Of course when you are as charming as me, who needs looks?!

You know it's bad when your own mother says to you (at age 12) Cindy, you aren't a very pretty girl, you need to get contacts and get rid of the glasses.

They even wrote in my baby book "she's the ugliest baby we have ever seen"

Gosh it's great to be loved.

I asked one of my professors to send in a letter of recommendation for law school for me three weeks ago. I can view online when it has been sent in, and it hasn't been submitted yet. They won't start reviewing your apps until the entire file is complete, and this is the only thing I'm missing. I sent him an email last night very politely asking him the status of the letter. Do you think that is rude? I didn't know what else to do - several of the deadlines are 1/1 and there is usually a two week processing period. I really tried to be as polite as possible (ie I'm sorry to bother you, thanks for helping me).

I don't think it is lgj. If he said he was going to do it, I'm sure he is aware of the importance and urgency of it. A polite reminder is well within the boundaries of good manners.

If he doesn't have it in by, oh, the weekend, I'd start to turn the heat up a bit, e.g. "if you don't have time to do it, please let me know so I can line up an alternate recommendation".

I don't have a Christmas list. I have two problems (well, I have a lot of problems actually, but only 2 Christmas list ones).

1.) I can't think of much till I go out shopping for others and then I see something and say "oooo, I want that".
2.) I just don't want that much. And what I do want costs >$50K.

I have the exact same problem!!! Problem is, I do most of my shopping online, so I don't see much stuff other than what I'm looking for for other people.

Although, I did play the good husband and go to Target with the wife the day after Thanksgiving and saw that they have:

South Park Seasons 1-4 on DVD
Land of the Lost Season 1-2 on DVD

I want those.

Tell 'em that every dollar they spend on your 'boring stuff' is another dollar that you'll have to spend on the fun stuff for yourself, and they'll probably screw up trying to get you anything cool and esoteric anyway.

That's what my parents told me when, at 17, I asked for Warhammer Fantasy Battle and they bought me underwear instead.

Dude.... seriously, I remember bubble baths from when I was a kid. My most enduring memory of them is that after you would drain the bath and try to towel off, you'd still be all filmy and just generally icky-feeling from the bubble-solution clinging to your skin.

I just generally can't relax (as in not do anything). To me, relaxing is writing/drawing/painting whilst bumping the Clash on the stereo, cigarette clenched between my lips and a couple of cold bottles of Sam Adams close at hand.

Give me more than ten minutes of 'do-nothing' and I start to get all antsy. I pace around my apartment. And start re-washing dishes.

Not a big fan of the bubble bath, unless it's a jacuzzi party.

Jazz reminds me a lot of wine. I know a few people who really know their stuff on both. But I've met a lot of people over the years who were kinda pretentious "wine snobs" and "jazz snobs". I love to jerk the chain of wine snobs. I like to swirl a taste around in my mouth and suck air, the way true wine experts do. Then I'll say something like "hmmmmmm... subtle, yet unobtrusive. Brave little vintage" and act all like I know what I'm talking about.

I've always wanted to smell the cork and swirl and taste the sample in a nice resturant, and then spit it out on the floor and say "ptoooie... I wouldn't hit a dog in the ass with this swill!!!!"

I haven't had the wild mountain burger - I think the zesty sauce and the monterray pepper jack cheese goes more with chicken than burgers though, so you might want to try the chicken, its good!

Hmm... I will be going by Wendy's on my way to pick up the DVD tonight after work... but I told the baby-momma I'd order a pizza.... oh well, I can always have cold pizza for breakfast in the morning. For you, Puffy, for you I'll try the chicken version tonight and give a full report come morning.

Roy pontificates...

I'm not too keen on Howard Stern. He's intelligent and witty but dwells a little too much in a smutty world for my tastes.

I've been to a lot of strip clubs. However, the last one I was at was at my bachelor party about ~20 yrs. ago. After getting up on stage and doing the bump with some topless bimbo, I figured that had to be the pinnacle of my adult entertainment career so I crossed it off my to-do list. Not a conscious life decision, just don't go there any more.

I like wine, be it red or white. I prefer a cork. I like beer too. I like a fine bourbon on the rocks. My drinking habits are now more quality than quantity.

My wife is a Yankee Candle addict so we have candles cranking away around the house all the time. She does the flavor of the month thing. We put candles on he dinner table sometimes to class the joint up a little.

I'm also a flowers in the house all the time guy. It just makes things a little nicer. Whenever we go to the store, we buy some flowers (nothing expensive, a $5-10 bundle) and put them in a vase on the kitchen island, on the kitchen table, or just wherever. In the summer we plant a flower cutting bed so we get a constant flow till the last hard frost.

I'm a shower guy. Nothing against bubble baths, but they just don't float my boat (and I've got a large boat).

I like older jazz. Like Coltrane, Adderley, Ornette Coleman, Miles era stuff. It's not on my everyday play list but does cross my CD player. I like to listen to Ella Fitzgerald when in the right mood.

My problem is that I like too many different kinds of music so I dabble a lot. Rap is about the only thing I truly don't like. But rock of all kinds, country old and new, classical, jazz, bluegrass, show tunes, folk, etc. all span the Roy collections. Soul and hip-hop have been know to come from my car stereo speakers as well.

There.

I don't like bubble baths. The only person who could lure me into one is Adam. So I don't see me taking one in this lifetime.

Lunch was delightful. Went to Elsa's (really good Mexican food) with a friend and we did a lot of girly dishing about men.

Rosie, go to Lowes or Home Depot and buy a rubber drain stopper.

I did, years ago. But the water would just slowly go down the drain anyway, and it got to be really annoying to keep having to fill up the tub while I was in it.

I should just demand a real drain plug. I don't think it's too much to ask for. But I "should" demand a lot of stuff in this apartment be fixed:

1. The fan in my bathroom ceiling is not actually in the ceiling; it's hanging from the ceiling by its wires. (A result of work not finished after the ceiling above my bathtub caved in, due to a broken pipe above me a couple years ago.)

2. My dishwasher is as broke as can be. Turn it on, not even one drop of water will appear in it.

3. Light fixture in my kitchen is broke. One of the bulbs went out a few months ago, so I put a new one in. Nothing happened. No light, nada. Broke.

4. The sliding glass doors to my balcony don't close properly. Gets pretty drafty in the winter.

5. There's a scary kid living in my closet. Oh wait, that's just my imagination.

Yeah, I need to move. Been saying it for years. Am going to do it next year.

I'd call $895 for a one-bedroom apartment a little steep too! I think I could get a mortgage for less than that.

If I had a roommate, I could afford a to pay half the rent of a two-bedroom. I'm not sure I want to move to Ky. though. Not because of the location (I'd be closer to work than I am now), but the hassle of moving to another state. The tax headaches, I'd have to get a new license ... and we all know how well that went in Ohio!

Did I miss something? You can't talk? Are you sick?

This sounds like another job for the RedsZone Posse. Or the Civilians. ;)

In other news, I'm wearing a new scarf that I finished last night. It's so pretty! Really soft and fuzzy.

Hey, I can't help it. I love my wife :luvu:
I like my husband. Most of the time.

I am kind of hard-hearted.

People just let you down.

Do you guys know any tips for getting a can open?

I have this can of pasta and I can't get it open. It's really making me mad.

I may not always like my wife, but I always love her.

The day the second half of the equation goes away is the day Big Trouble starts.

Like, lawyers, guns, and money kind of trouble.

Can or jar?

If a jar pound on the bottom or place a spoon under the lids lip, to release the vaccumm seal.

One time, I was babysitting and couldn't figure out how to work the can opener... I called the six-year-old next door, and he came over and opened it for me...

So obviously, I'm not much of a help in this category... If you want little Cole's help (he must be at least 11 or 12 by now), just let me know and I'll give him a call. ;)

Just between you and me, mr creek made a grievous error in judgment a few years ago. With all of my creekness I wanted to kick his sorry ass to the curb. But creek jr’s happiness was/is more important than what I wanted.

So I forgave, but will never forget.

And it changed everything. Forever.

I don’t even know why I am telling this. Guess cause it’s rainy and I am melancholy right now.

Uh, can opener doesn't work?

Sometimes when I've opened a can, the stuff in it makes a seal tight around the can and air can't get in to displace the stuff. I use my old beer can opener (Burger Beer) to poke a hole in the bottom and out it plops.

So I forgave, but will never forget.

I've been with my wife for 18 years, the we dated she lived in Oxford and I in Berkeley/Santa Cruz. We both dated other people for a brief period, I instigated it, because I'm an idiot.

We still talk about it to this day.

It has more lives then a Terminator.

When you run a lunch counter and there is 60 guys yelling out hot dog orders you have to get that apple juice opened quick.

Next time you see one in the store, get one of those super grabber rubber mat jar opener thingies. Get 2, one for the lid, one for the jar.

I believe I could twist the chrome off a trailer hitch with one of those things.
