Online training is so bunk. I really enjoy having to wait 3-4 minutes between page refreshs so I can read another sentence chock-full of invigorating information, such as: "To export this form to Excel, choose "Export" from the File Menu. The File Menu is located at the upper left hand corner of your window. Try it now!"

Please save me.

That is the perfect post for any thread, at any time.

Speaking of "at any time," when we carpooled in to work this morning the first person to be dropped off was XXXXXXX, who manages a Chipotle restaurant here in town. He told us to wait in the parking lot for a moment while he disabled the security system, and then came back out with three frosty bottles of Negra Modelo for us. At 8 in the morning. On our way to work.

He looked a little baffled when we put the drinkage in the trunk. :ipoke:

Greatest sports movies of all time, by Puffy

Golf - - Caddyshack (non-debatable)
Basketball - - Hoosiers (debatable, but come on)
Football - - The Longest Yard (North Dallas Forty, The Waterboy, Varsity Blues, Necessary Roughness, all funny, but not as good as Longest Yard)

Boxing - - Rocky (although Rocky II, Rocky III and Raging Bull could all make an argument)

Hockey - - Slapshot (non-debatable)

Baseball - - here is the hard one, Field of Dreams or The Natural are my two, but Major League was hilarious, Bull Durham was great, I really like 61* on HBO

This was based on a real race, the Brock Yates "Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash". Highly illegal but a lot of fun.

With a couple friends, we did a downsized Columbus to Dayton version of this back in the day with v1.0 versions of Fuzzbusters and lookouts. It's actually very hard to drive fast on the interstate.

Good job WOY, congrats on your second STK - catching up to RL.

For extra credit, and this is almost unknowable because it is only mentioned once and only in passing, but does anyone know what state Bushwood Country Club is in?

Some actors who were considered for the part of Chief Brody in Jaws - Jeff Bridges, Jan Michael Vincent.

The first choice to play Quint was Lee Marvin, but he turned the part down because he did not want to work with an unknown, rookie director (Spielberg had only done TV and one small budget movie at that time)

Actually no - Duel was a made for TV movie. The small budget movie he did was The Sugarland Express, which had a movie release, etc.

He had been doing TV movies and directing TV shows (like Marcus Welby, MD), but Sugarland Express was his first motion picture, Jaws was his second

Yup - the E True Hollywood Story. I love those things.

So does my wife, personally E is the bane of my existence, that and the VH1 bios.

It's a running battle in this house, I can't stand the thought of knowing the particulars of George Michael or Vince Neil's lives.

In the 4 man bobsled all you really have to do is push at the beginning if you are one of the two middle people. In the two man, one's the driver the other runs the brakes.

Not that I want it to become a Olympic sport, but if you ever get the chance to see the Kings Firecracker jump rope team, go see them. It's a team of 4th-7th grade kids that do the most unbelievable jumprope stuff you've ever seen.

(Roy who was pretty fair at jumping rope in the day because his HS basketball coach was an ex-boxer and had us jump rope for conditioning and footwork)

I had a kid that worked for me that would come in every week telling me how hilarious the show was. Like, quote the show verbatim, tell me about all the characters, plot details, blah blah.

I finally watched it one week and thought I was watching a different show. I just didn't get it and thought it completely stupid. I chalked it up to an age thing. I figured there were things at 25 that I thought stupendously hilarious that I watch now and think "it must have been the drugs".

But then, I never got the Grateful Dead either.

I tried hard. Listened to them sober and under a variety of substances. Got to the point where I thought they were pretty OK and liked some of the songs. Have few Dead albums and a couple NRPS ones as well.

But I had some Dead head friends where it was a religious experience and their entire existence was oriented around the Dead, what Jerry was thinking about as he played a guitar solo, the cosmic ramifications thereof, and where to score dope from next. I finally just moved on to a different circle of friends. Different strokes was all it was.

Ahh yes, I know(knew) lots of people like that, I was a big ole deadhead in the 80's, early 90's actually made thousands of dollars in school selling t-shirts to stores, on tour ect.

Never left the planet though.

Got to meet the band during a film shoot in 92.

Jerry by far was the coolest and the only one to talk to me.

Kinda made it all worthwhile, and also made it easy to walk away from it too.

SB, how was your first day of classes?

:D It went pretty well!! Much better than I was expecting due to some certain circumstances... Last Saturday, one of our cheerleaders was killed in a car accident, and while he was only a casual acquaintance of mine, he was very close to my best girlfriend here, who is the captain of the cheerleading squad. I spent most of yesterday bringing my friend flowers and being a shoulder for her to cry on, plus mourning quite a bit myself.

I was somewhat reluctant to attend classes today since I thought it would be extra difficult, but it turned out that they served as a nice distraction. It was a nice touch of a familiar routine, which made me feel better since things are pretty chaotic at the moment otherwise.

My bio class is about cells and proteins, which I find fairly interesting (compared to the evolution class I took last semester- EWWW!!). It'll be a good challenge, but then, to me, all classes here are challenging, especially the science ones!

Physics is going to be interesting... I loved physics in HS, but this is going to be a completely different universe, I'm sure. Oh and here's a shocker- I can barely understand the foreign prof... :MandJ:

Creative writing could be very, very bad for me... The instructor is, well, comprised of every single stereotype that deals with the English and Language Arts department. I'm a very concrete, precise thinker, so I really hope he's not going to be too tough on the grading. He almost drove me INSANE today with his sloppy handwriting and meaningless scribbles on the board (yes, I am THAT obsessive-compulsive :p: ). If you're going to use the blackboard, USE IT FOR A PURPOSE AND COMMUNICATE SOMETHING CLEARLY!!! We had write sentences, stand up, and say them to the class without using any consonants... WHAT?!?!?! My sentence was (of course)- "And this one belongs to the Reds."

Social psychology was pretty much what I expected- interesting, but not as meaningful to me as the other sciences. We spent 45 minutes taking a survey about love. Such as- True or false: Opposites attract. I said true, and that turned out to be correct... Woohoo!! :D

I've gotta go eat some yummy dining hall food with my girls... Oh well, it's great to be back in the swing of things at least!! Hope I didn't bore you all too much with my in-depth analysis!! ;)

That was me earlier today. My youngest of three boxers today decided it would be very fun indeed to push open a closet and get into my backpacking stuff, and tore apart my backpacking pillow and ripped a hole in my sleeping bag. My older two apparently thought it was funny and must have cheered her on.

I went outside and she knew I was angry, and she gave me this face, and I just became a big wimp.

I'm the polar opposite. I can't hit my driver straight to save my life, but I hit my 7 140yds straight as an arrow and so on down to the sand wedge, but I always seem to have one stray putt that I butcher and half a dozen drives that snake out all over the place.

I'm a Ping guy, I have a friend who's been working for Calloway for 2 years now who's been trying to get me set up w/ a setup of Calloway's but I've been stubborn.

I found a used set of Ping Eye 2's a few years back for dirt cheap and I've been using them ever since. Have a Ping TiSi driver that I can't hit straight to save my life. An Olimar 3 wood that I'm fantastic at hitting straight up in the air every other shot. And an old beat up Titleist sand wedge, my best club that I can nail at 95 yards.

As far as distance, I can hit my 6I 150 yards and slotted every ten on down to the wedges. Any lower numbered clubs and it's litearlly hit or miss.

How about you fellas?

Four signs she's high maintenence

Most men have been there. Many won’t admit they’ve been there: involved with a high-maintenance date or girlfriend. You can run from a high-maintenance woman and you can hide, but your best chance of going unharmed is to avoid her all together.

“Once I get a whiff of one, I steer clear,” says Brian, 40, an advertising manager in Omaha. Ross, 43, a consultant in San Francisco, found that he hasn’t attracted one in recent years. “I really don't date high-maintenance chicks as a rule.”

To avoid them, you’ve got to know how to spot them. Consider these tips on spotting the classic high-maintenance woman:

High H.B.A. factor. Rookie observers, remember the H.B.A. acronym (which stands for “Health, Beauty & Accessories”). As in, obsessed with H.B.A. Scan the latest trendy store, restaurant or bar and you’ll spot high-maintenance women easily in their natural habitat. Ground zero for the high-maintenance species are beauty salons, malls and occasionally, the health club. (Yes, female gym rats can be high maintenance, although scientists say it’s a rare occurrence.) Is she dressed to the nines at the grocery store? Is she sporting full-tilt makeup and big hair at the health club when other women are in sweats and no makeup? Look closer and you’ll find what constitutes high-maintenance is as varied as her patchwork quilt or designer bag, her intricately painted toenails or her voracious appetite for beauty treatments.

Emotional insecurity. High maintenance women can be as insecure as a lost toddler. They can freak out if you even so much as give an extended glance at another woman, among other indicators of emotional neediness. Her neediness often requires her to control and direct your behavior.

Controlling. Is she always instructing you to call her or sets rules around things? (Example: “Call me at work tomorrow at 2 p.m.”) Worse yet, she might express anger or manipulate you to get you to do what she wants. A range of ploys such as her demands to call frequently, fix-it items, and transportation needs (“Can you pick me up?”) are all ways to keep you on a short leash or otherwise attempt to control your behavior.

Communications. Guys, if she talks like this, run: “Like, oh my God, I was on the way to the mall and…” (At your own risk, remind her that “Valleyspeak” went out in the 1990s with Frank Zappa.) Pay attention to what she talks about for it’s the critical indicator of what might – or might not be – going on in her brain. Is it all about her, shopping and her friends? Chances are you have a high-maintenance girl on your hands. I say “girl” because rarely are mature women really that high maintenance. If they are, they may be limited to the divorcée set, who brandish fake dark tans, fake body parts, overprocessed hair and enough bling-bling to make you squint.

And, if you still have doubts, consider these stories:

Look in the mirror. Make absolutely certain that you’re not the one crying foul. Could you be high maintenance yourself? Consider the case of Michelle, now 42, who a decade ago broke up with a serious boyfriend, Jeremy. They had dated a year and a half and Michelle graciously declined his proposal for marriage and broke it off. “He accused me of being a materialistic you-know-what. Guess he was pretty raw, even after I told him not to buy an engagement ring.” Michelle was never high maintenance. She drives an older car that’s paid off, makes her own coffee every morning and has owned the same home for many years.

The picnic test. If you have doubts about her high-maintenance level, put it to the test. See how she handles an impromptu picnic. Suggest casual food from the deli, a cookout, or wine, bread and cheese. Then, gauge her reactions carefully. Dirk, a Minneapolis marketing manager, didn’t discover he was dating a high-maintenance woman until it was too late. When he was in his early thirties, he dated twentysomething Jodi for a couple of years. “On our way to a picnic, we had to stop so she could buy a new outfit, out of my pocket of course, because the one she took an hour to pick out on her own wasn’t good enough for the picnic.”

That was the first “picnic incident.” The second one was even sadder. The couple had spontaneously decided to go on a picnic, so they stopped by a deli at a grocery store near a nice lake area. “When the clerk weighed each of our salads, hers weighed more. She stormed out saying that I made her look like a pig because I wasn’t eating as much as she was. Kinda nuts, huh?”

I've had the same Ping Pal4 for 10 years.

Okay, I'm going to try to catch up on this thread in one post <deep breath> ...

1. SB, glad classes went well. Sounds like an interesting variety, if nothing else! I sympathize with the foreign prof. situation, that can be tough. And sorry about your friend's friend, how awful. :(

2. Creek, glad your eyes are okay!

3. Krono's not here b/c he's asleep (I assume)

4. Even so: Krono, good luck with the temp people tomorrow!

5. Despite all my talk, I did not tease my brother about his braces. He's in some pain, and had trouble eating dinner, and I just didn't have it in me to make matters worse. Plus he starts school Wednesday, and I'm sure he feels self-conscious already.

6. My golf clubs: They're some cheap brand you can probably find at Wal-Mart or something. (Knight is the brand.) But I have a very pretty blue bag for them! :)

I'm probably forgetting something, but that's all I can remember!

Oh! One other thing!

When I came home tonight, with my arms full of leftovers, I came across THE biggest bug EVER in the hallway to my apartment. Of course, it was flying around right outside my door. I honestly don't know what kind of bug it is, but it is UGLY. Looks like something they'd make people eat on "Fear Factor."

Anyway, I was standing at the bottom of the stairs looking up, watching the bug fly around, figuring out how to get into my apartment minus the bug. As if on cue, my two (male) neighbors from upstairs came down, and one was attacked by the bug. They both were freaking out, then they came around the corner and saw me standing there. I was thinking "Please one of you, kill that thing!" And one of them said "Do you want us to kill that for you?" So I said "Yes, please, that would be so great." Well, one guy got a better look at the bug and said "No way am I killing that thing! What is that?! That thing is HUGE!!" We all agreed: It's one big bug.

But did the boys kill it? NO. They were too freaked out by it, so they just wished me luck getting into my apartment minus the bug. I then offered them beer to kill it, and they STILL wouldn't do it. I thought that would work for sure.

I did manage to get into my apartment okay, but it was freaky. And I'm a little disappointed in the boys upstairs.

The only criteria I have for a good golfer is to play fast and have a good time. I hate golfers who are always mad and complaining.

And by play fast, I mean be ready when it's your turn.

Everybody struggles when they're learning. It's a hard sport to master. You can find out a lot about someone's personality watching them play golf. You'll definitely see how they handle adversity.

If you work hard enough to be a low handicapper, it's like physical chess, a beautiful blend of mind and body in a sport.

It's got tradition, history, strategy, tactics, and despite what most uninformed observers will tell you, it's a great physical and mental challenge when played on a high level.

You forgot my biggest peeve, the guys who play up your butt, always pressing you even though they could sit still for 5 and enjoy the scenary.

I was kidding about the walk part, that's a Twain quote, I live right by a public course, about 200 yards, maybe I'll take it up again someday. I played it quite a bit in my teens and early 20's.

My short game was dreadful.

Yeah, "A good walk spoiled" is a famous Twain quote, and the title of an excellent book on golf.

By play fast, I mean think out your shot while the other guy is hitting his. Don't just start your thought process once it's your turn.

When I play my best, it's switching back and forth between the intellectual-analytical side to the totally conceptual-visual mode at will. That takes a lot of work and discipline, but it's pretty sublime when you can do it without running out of gas mentally before the end of the round.

You assess the lie, wind, distance, and conditions... chose your club, and decide on the shot with your linear thinking side. Then you switch totally to visual imagery, visualizing the show without any internal dialogue. Then you get into your pre-shot routine without any linear thoughts, only visual and rythmic.

When you can do that, it's very zen like.... "inner golf", if you will.

And that leaves all the other time to enjoy the beauty of the course, between that minute and a half mental and physical routine at each shot.

I do have pesticide (it's for indoor house plants) but I suspect it wouldn't even phase this sucker. I don't have Raid or anything.

Seriously, you guys would not believe this bug. I'm sorry to go on and on about it, but it's getting even scarier -- the bug *makes noise* too. It's this screeching sound that gradually gets louder, then abruptly stops. It's *awful.* I've heard it twice so far. :help:

Anyone have any clue what it could be? I would love to know. It's about 3 or 4 inches big, it can fly, it makes noise, it's ugly as can be, looks to be dark brown with maybe a little green on it. At first I thought it was a really really big fly, but the wings aren't the same as a fly's wings.

I've been keeping an eye on it through the peephole in my door. Two people have walked through the hall since I got home, and both ended up running away from it. :MandJ:

SB, I had a physics professor whose native tongue was some form of Chinese. Most of the course was Optics. He couldn't distinguish between "reflection" and "refraction" so his explanations were useless. Very frustrating.

But it forced us to figure it out for ourselves, which is sometimes the more important lesson.

And Krono, a temp agency can be a great place to start. Go for it.

Yeah I am starting to get that impression. At least 64 ounces a day. I think the capsules might be the way to go. I'm looking for something, anything, to relieve some of the ankle discomfort. Some research shows that green tea might help with some arthritis pain.

Salami and cheese. I know that a lot of people think low carb is crazy. But I feel so much better when I do it. My blood sugar is like a roller coaster when I have a lot of carbs. And the weight does pretty much melt off. Let me know when you need some info.
