Not much interested in the NFL anymore. I do keep track of what the Saints are doing, but I don't pay much attention until after the WS. And by then, it usually doesn't matter much.

If the Saints ever move, I'll probably stop following the NFL completely.

I'll just answer all three of your posts Sandy at once :)

I'm in the same boat. If I'm not busy Sunday and it's on, I'll watch it, but I'd pick college over the NFL every day of the week. Most of my friends are hard core NFL types, so there chatter is what keeps me up to date more than anything.

Other than Baseball or College Football, the rest of the sports aren't that exciting.

Glad you liked Mr. 3000. I think Bernie Mac is funny as can be, and plan to see that one this weekend.

And twins, that's twice as much trouble as is needed. It's amazing how with twins they are so different, aside from the looks. In college, I dated one of exact twins. After a few months, I could pick up right away on the differences. One night, Liz and Cory decided to play jokes on myself and Liz's bf, by switching without telling either of us. I picked up on it in about 10 minutes with body language that it was not Cory. Liz's BF, did not pick up on it however, and found out later when he tried to put the moves on her and she finally had to let him know. He was gone not much longer after that.

Just always could tell them apart by the ticks, speaking, and the way they carried themselves.

Hey Rosie!! Yeppers, I'm back in Cleveland. Thanks for asking!! :) Took me A LOT longer than I thought due to busier traffic and numerous restroom stops (too much diet pop :MandJ: ). Oh well, I'm back and now I'm writing another creative writing paper that's due tomorrow and studying for tomorrow morning's biology test that is comprised of all essay questions. Of course, lurking in the back of my mind are the worries about my physics test and psych test, which are both on Wednesday. I love it. :help:

My fantasy league at work is turning into a very sick joke.

Week 1, I lose my #2 WR (draft pick #4), Steve Smith to a broken leg.
Week 2, I lose my #1 RB, Deuce McAllister (draft pick #1) to a high ankle sprain, and my only TE, Kellen Winslow (draft pick #5) to a possible broken leg.

Not to mention that the healthy players I do have are NOT doing diddly. Prime examples: Travis Henry (draft pick #2), Jerry Porter (draft pick #8), Trent Green (draft pick #6), Lamar Gordon (waiver wire). I hate football. ;)

I'm running out of people to play. Well, its been nice donating $50.

Tonight is the first night of tryouts for select basketaball for creek jr. I just hate that they start this competitive stuff this young. But that's the way it's done here. If you want to have any chance of making the high school team, you have to start playing select in 3rd grade. :dflynn: And since the Dr is projecting creek jr to be 6'4" to 6'6", he will probably want to play in high school. And now they just cram you in. Last time I flew I was on a 737. They are supposed to be configured 2 aisle 3, but this one was 3 aisle 3. OH MY GOSH. I think I knew the guy next to me better than his wife does.

They just did an article on the news about what airports they put the new sniffer machines.

Now why do they tell that? If you have explosives you want to sneak on a plane and you hear on CNN or FOX or CBS that there is a sniffer at JFK, then you'll just go get a ticket to fly (and blow up) out of Newark.

Saw Mr. 3000 today. It was pretty corny, but it was kind of fun. Some of it was filmed here in New Orleans. If you look closely in the Wrigley Field shots, you'll see green plastic seats that don't look like that belong there. That's because they don't. That's Zephyr Field. Have any of you gone to see it?

I might..looks funny :)

How do the Dolphins suck? Let me count the ways.

Man, this is going to be a looooooong season. :(

Well at least they can get a high draft pick for the next coach ;)

Yeah, but you guys are used to it. I think in all the years I've followed the Dolphins since the mid 70s they have only been under .500 twice.

I haven't seen it yet ... I'll probably wait until it's on DVD. Was some of it filmed in Cincinnati too? Seems like I remember reading something about that.

I though so to, something was filmed here..or was it in Milwaukee while the Reds were there?

My mom just got back from my sister's and the twins. They will be a big ONE YEAR OLD in less than three weeks. Two boys, fraternal twins, and very different in their ways. One is into sounds. He likes to see how different surfaces and different objects make different sounds. The other likes to figure out how things work. He figured out the remote for the ceiling fan and light fixture in the den. I haven't seen them since June. :(

Awww...they sound adorable :)

Not much interested in the NFL anymore. I do keep track of what the Saints are doing, but I don't pay much attention until after the WS. And by then, it usually doesn't matter much.

If the Saints ever move, I'll probably stop following the NFL completely.

What if they just move across the river? :D

I love the college game better as well, my trouble is if Florida is not playing I have trouble watching..I just keep thinking "these teams think they are better..THEY ALL SUCK" ;) in the NFL I can cheer for either team playing usually

I've heard about a threatened move to Mississippi, but not across the river. If they just build a new stadium across the river, that's still part of New Orleans. If they move to the Mississippi Gulf Coast, that'd would be like the Bengals moving to Louisville. Might as well move to San Antonio (where Benson already has ties)

So did Rosie tell the guy to buzz off about vacation? If not, Rosie, look up the word assertive in dictionary. Read it, learn it, live it. The guy is playing off your guilt and your niceness. Don't be so nice. Learning how to be an SOB (or the female equivalent) is a good skill to have. I like it when I strike a little fear into people's hearts.

If you want to have any chance of making the high school team, you have to start playing select in 3rd grade. :dflynn: And since the Dr is projecting creek jr to be 6'4" to 6'6", he will probably want to play in high school. Creek, that starting to play select now so he can play HS ball is bunk. It seems that way, but kids develop at wildly different rates. Just because a kid is a top player in the 5th grade doesn't mean they'll always be there. There is a very real risk that you'll burn the kid out by the time they get to middle school.

My middle daughter did the select soccer thing from 4th through 8th grade and she is sick of the sport. Summer soccer camps, training sessions, fall soccer, spring soccer, winter indoor, more training, it all gets ridiculous. I'm sorry we started her so early because its turned her off to the sport. She is quitting after this fall season. She said "Dad, I'm a kid, I don't know what I want to do, but I want to try more things than soccer". I had no comeback.

The best player on the Mason middle school 8th grade basketball team just started playing the sport last year. The 8th grade coach tried to get my daughter to try out since she hadn't played before and was still fresh and willing to learn (she didn't want to). He said all the AAU kids and parents are all pushing hard for college scholarships (again, 8th grade) and if they don't get PT, they go to AD or the school board. Nobody cares about the team any more.

creek14
09-20-2004, 08:56 AM
Well, we're kind of connected in the school system here in Beavercreek and the HS coach actually told my sister that we need to get jr in select now.

If he doens't like it, I'll pull him out. But I have this fear that if he doesn't play when he's 16 he'll hate me for not having him in the right programs.

He's a pretty good soccer player, but no select there. I don't want to put that much pressure on him along with the BB.

He has never been below the 99th percentile in height. I know he will be really tall. I am just confused. Why don't these kids come with instructions?

Super_Barry11

Roy Tucker

Yeah, we're connected as well and we got the same spiel from the HS (and college) coaches as well. Soccer, volleyball, and basketball. I frankly think the select and HS coaches care more about W-L than about the well-being of the kids. That's our jobs to look out for.

Just be sure he is having fun. Select sports takes an awful lot of the fun out of sports and makes them deadly serious. They all say "well, winning is the fun part" but what if you're not on one of those elite teams? Having a coach up in your grill at the age of 10 is no fun. And it will happen.

I've just seen too many kids burned out. The world presses them entirely too hard to grow up too early. My philosophy is let kids be kids for as long as they can be and that's my job as a parent.

That's a tough decision to make, creek. You don't want to put him in something that isn't going to be fun for him. OTOH you would like to see him take advantage of his height and talents. I think you're doing the right thing. The main thing is that he's having fun. Even the best players in the pros played because it was fun for them. Sure there may be certain times where he's not having any fun but all in all if he's having fun, keep him in there. If he thinks it stinks, get him out of there. I'm guessing even if he doesn't play select that at his height, by the time he gets in Jr. high and high school, if he has any skills at all the coaches will be begging him to come out and play. Don't worry about him hating you because you didn't have him in the right programs. Don't borrow trouble. You do what you think is best and justify it like that. I think you being a good mom will far outweigh any resentment he may have if you pull him out of this or you keep him in.

You know, I haven't told him that this is select tryouts. I just told him it's practice. So that way if he doesn't make it, it won't be a big deal. Really I don't think that it would be anyway, he is such a laid back kid. I really don't care if he makes it or not. Really. Cause I kind of agree with Chip, if he is as tall as we all seem to think and has any talent, they'll want him. He grew so much this summer it freaked me out. He ended last school year in size 7 shorts, went back this year in size 12's. That's when the coach told us to get him in select, when he saw that he's already pushing 5' at 8 years of age. I guess I can't blame him.

My 13yo nephew's been on select soccer teams for a couple of years. His parents travel all over Ohio and adjacent states, hauling him to games and tournaments. The parental socializing and partying is just as meticulously-planned as the kids' games. IMHO, and in a lot of my extended family's HO, it's ridiculous. He's also developing a truly ugly jock persona and starting to get in trouble at school.

My kids made it clear that they didn't like soccer or basketball and we have not pushed them in that direction.

It sounds to me, and remember that I'm an idiot, that in the case of Una's described situation you would want to look at the culture - competitive sports can be ugly in the 'must-win-at-all-costs' mentality, especially as it would be fostered on 'select teams' - but the parents did choose to put the child there, and not pull him/her out when the problems start to emerge.

Of course, I don't have kids. So it's pretty easy for me to pontificate on that which I do not know about. I do it all the time.

They do..it's written in an extinct language though ;)

H.P. Lovecraft:

Three times Randolph Carter dreamed of the marvelous city, and three times was he snatched away while still he paused on the high terrace above it. All golden and lovely it blazed in the sunset, with walls, temples, colonnades and arched bridges of veined marble, silver-basined fountains of prismatic spray in broad squares and perfumed gardens, and wide streets marching between delicate trees and blossom-laden urns and ivory statues in gleaming rows; while on steep northward slopes climbed tiers of red roofs and old peaked gables harbouring little lanes of grassy cobbles. It was a fever of the gods, a fanfare of supernal trumpets and a clash of immortal cymbals. Mystery hung about it as clouds about a fabulous unvisited mountain; and as Carter stood breathless and expectant on that balustraded parapet there swept up to him the poignancy and suspense of almost-vanished memory, the pain of lost things and the maddening need to place again what once had been an awesome and momentous place.

He knew that for him its meaning must once have been supreme; though in what cycle or incarnation he had known it, or whether in dream or in waking, he could not tell. Vaguely it called up glimpses of a far forgotten first youth, when wonder and pleasure lay in all the mystery of days, and dawn and dusk alike strode forth prophetic to the eager sound of lutes and song, unclosing fiery gates toward further and surprising marvels. But each night as he stood on that high marble terrace with the curious urns and carven rail and looked off over that hushed sunset city of beauty and unearthly immanence he felt the bondage of dream's tyrannous gods; for in no wise could he leave that lofty spot, or descend the wide marmoreal fights flung endlessly down to where those streets of elder witchery lay outspread and beckoning.

Parenting is goofy. Like creek said, they don't come with a user's guide.

Just about when you're getting to be fairly good at it and start to figure a few things out, you're done.

Either that or the kids start to get all grown up and think they know better than you.

My strategy these days is make Zen-like comments to them and walk away. A few days later they come back to you saying "just what did you mean by that?".

Okay, I want to tell you a story about my son. I just found this out this weekend when he went to a birthday sleep over.

He (creek jr) has a little buddy who has an occasional seizure. He’s the one who had the sleepover and his mom told me all this. The little boy had one last year while on the playground. All the other kids started laughing or just ran away. Creek jr moved the other boy to the grass so he wouldn’t bang his head on the concrete and then ran for a teacher. Then when everything was over, he berated the other kids for not helping and laughing.

God I love that kid.
