How much of a lead is it when it is not considered a save?
Assumimg the closer enters the 9th inning with no one on base, a 3 run lead. Otherwise, he has to have the tying run on deck (or pitch 3 effective innings).

Marty was talking about Nomar, and saying it was his knee, I was watching the Cubs game with the sound off and as he came out of the batters box his back foot slid out and it sure looked like he reached for his groin, as he fell. So I am not a doctor nor do I play one in my spare time but I thought it was a strained/pulled groin as soon as I saw it.

I think it was last season, the Reds were up by 4 or 5 and Graves gave up like 3 and ended up getting a save when originally he wasn't pitching for one
A pitcher can't get a save because he gave up runs to create a save situation. It's either a save situation when you come in or you can't ever get one.

Nah, they're walking, working deep into counts. Honestly, if that's the gameplan, you'll win more than you lose.

Perez's wildness helped that a bit, but I agree in general that's what this offense needs to do. That's why it drives me crazy when I hear people wanting them to get "more aggressive." They're far more dangerous when they work counts, wear out starters and feast on middle relievers.

Paul Wilson's last win coming into tonight...
Oct. 1, 2004 vs. Pirates. Complete game, 5 hits, 1 ER (HR).

Paul Wilson's last 4 starts in 2004 were quality starts. 3 out of 4 this year gives him 7 QS in 8 games. Not bad.

So...now here's the $64,000 question...

Can you possibly justify sitting Pena again, if he starts to slump a bit? I mean, he's become the most dangerous hitter in the lineup, beyond even Adam Dunn.

REDS are 5-1 in 6 quality start games. 3-5 when they don't.

Great game.

Considering most of our quality starts seem to be about 3 runs in 6 innings, it shows how important it is if we get even OK pitching. Our offense will score runs.

The REDS have played 57 games since Danny Graves last blew a save (Aug. 17, 2004 @ Cards). He converted his last 5 saves last season and has gone 6 for 6 this year. Guess that makes 11 saves in a row. And a lot of gray hairs for us.

Except with Dunn and Pena will cost runs in the OF.

Having the rotation is good and if they can all contribute the better.

Does that mean we're not going to sit Rich again either?
