I guess this means Danny Graves is closing the ninth.

Wagner due up second in the inning, so yes, that's what it means...

Hope Wagner makes it through the 8th ok. This should be his spot. Eighth inning if tied or ahead.

Then he absolutely has to play 5 games out of 7.

He brings too much to the top of the order.

FeLo for Dessens (in essence) is really looking good right now.

FeLo and Brandon Webb, and I will go to my grave insisting the Reds could have had that if they'd have pushed a bit harder, would look a lot better.

I agree about Freel starting five of every seven.

Kc61

Kearns has to put out the cold cuts after the game?

Wanted Freel in the outfield, Jimenez at second, defensively. Freel was coming up in next inning so thought it made more sense to replace Kearns, who might not hit again.

Not terrible thinking.

and, yes, Kearns had to put out the cold cuts as well.

Well, there goes all your guys theories. Double switch and still Mercker only goes one inning. So why did he take Kearns out again???

Yes, it worked, I'm just curious.

Is it possible that since the Reds scored 2 more runs, he didn't want to burn Mercker anymore, so he could pitch tomorrow if necessary? But with only a 3 run lead, he was hoping for 2 innings from Kent?

I do now that many pitchers can pitch 1 inning 4-5 games in a row (if needed), but pitching that second inning really means they then need a day off.

Personally I'd prefer Kearns and DJ as the defensive replacement, Kearns has the best OF arm, Freel the worst. With a 3 run lead I play for defense not setting up the lineup for the next inning.

I thought pulling Kearns was the right move. I know he hit a homer, but the Reds have a a versatile team and Kearns drew the short straw today. By putting the pitcher farther back in the lineup it delayed having to make the choice about what to do in terms of using a pinch hitter.

When I get a chance, I'm going to start another "get rid of Larue" thread. He is third in the league in striking out, with less than 80 at bats. Might as well platoon Valentin and Sardinha and save a few million bucks.

I find it strange that you would want to get rid of a slumping Larue, but congratulating the possible return to productive baseball by Jimenez. Larue is a notorious streak hitter. His time will come. Sardiinha will likely always hit like Larue is today. There is little upside.
