Graves' 1st and 3rd strikes were the best 2 pitches he's thrown all year.

I still think that if Wagner had gotten the out impressively, he would have gone out for the 9th. But after 2 walks, Wagner wasn't a particularly good choice to continue. because when he's bad, he's really bad.

Lefty Specialist, meet your new best friend, Dave Miley's lineup construct. That was easy, of course, Sauerbeck has always been Griffey kryptonite.

I can't imagine, even as bas as the Indians lineup has looked, that they aren't going to tatoo one of those 71mph hanging sliders - even though as PuffyPig mentioned, they have better movement and late biting action than Graves' pitches have of late.

Giving up an out to sacrifice against a guy as hittable as Graves, is INSANE, no matter what the outdated "book" says.

Wedge was completely right. That's animated, sticking up for your players by him, not the halfhearted getting tossed for show that Miley demonstrated at Shea the other day.

The Indians got jobbed, must be Graves' lucky night - a bail out call, and 2 Ks in the same game. We'll take it.

When Miley was at Louisville and when he first came up, it seemed to me at least, that he was more willing to get tossed. I think he needs to go back to that, IMO.

1 out, man on first. Graves' K's the guy he had already hit while trying to bunt (Peralta). Now 2 strikes to Cora.

Be thankful, without terrible umpiring, Sizemore just drove in the tying run. Instead it's 1st and 3rd for Casey Blake. Valentin's also stopped a few that LaRue likely plays into a passed ball.

Wow. I didn't hear that. Get this. I picked up Harang to pitch in fantasy league and got a W, and yes, I have graves as a closer. I also have Lopez and Dunn so the Reds really helped me extend my lead in fantasy play. Lopez is the surprise of the REds this year. Well, Harang too! 8 Ks too I think I saw.

At this stage of the season, a starter should be able to throw 115 pitches every game easily.

Quick quiz for ya' then, PP...

In 2004, of the top 40 MLB ERA qualifiers, how many threw an average of 115 Pitches per Game?

Now, another quick quiz...

Do you think I'd ask that question if I didn't already know that the answer is zero?

So what?

There's games where even good starters fail to pitch 115 pitches becasue they are ineffective or because they are PH for.

My point was that a pitcher with a lead pitching well should easily pitch 115 pitches.

Nope, I hate to break it to ya' but Harang had 9 K's tonight, 1 earned run, 4 hits, and 2BB's. Hope that helps. :)

What happened to the Indians' offense? This is basically the same cast of characters as last year and they were very good at the plate. This year, they've been horrible.

TRF
05-20-2005, 10:31 PM
Actually Steel, you have taken his quote out of context a bit.

He said they should be able to go 115, not that they should or even would. Some games will be better, more pitch efficient. Some games they are gone at 105 an 5 ip. it happens. But by this time of the year, if a pitcher is a true innings eater, then they should at least be able to go up to 115 every night. I certainly don't think they should, and i certainly don't want to see 130+ PC's Dusty Bakers guys seem to do all to frequently, but Harang is doing 105-115, and pitching into the 8th regularly with really decent K numbers.

no, not 115 every start, but being able to do that and doing it are 2 different things.

Ah, sorry about my misunderstanding of the context, PP. Didn't realize you were talking about "capable" instead of "should". Of course, maybe you are talking about "should" throw 115 consistently. If so, that's a different thing altogether.

My bad.

Exactly. There was no difference in Graves tonight than any other night he pitches. He was very hittable, but he was facing the worst offensive team in the Major Leagues (I think). No kudos from me on this one for Danny. a typical Graves save, but another that might help us be free of him before the All Star break.
