Classic move in the days of 10 pitchers was to have one guy who could rake and that's all he did.

And tell dirty jokes.

I miss those days. I still think the Reds would be better with only 10 (or at most 11) pitchers. Why carry more bad pitchers to take innings away from your better pitchers?

And I remember the kind of guys you are talking about.

Greg Gross
Rusty Staub
Manny Mota

Lenny Harris and Jacob Cruz seem to be throwbacks in that mold.

It's pretty hard to get a cheap blown save.

Not really. If a pitcer comes in with bases loaded and no outs up by one run, if he gives up a sac fly, then strikes the next two guys out, it becomes a blown save.

RedFanAlways1966

Good start to the inning... infield hit for Ryan Freel.

$100 says Randa bunts here.

SteelSD
06-08-2005, 09:57 PM
Freel knocks one off Cantu's glove and Cantu kicks it around (ends up scored as Base Hit).

Please, Mr. Miley. Don't screw this up...please?

Exactly. There are saves of ALL stripes, so many it's downright useless as a predictive stat.

Walk to Randa on 4 pitches. Not too many were close according to Marty.

1st & 2nd, no outs... Casey up.

DoogMinAmo

Freel in Baez's head, or just an utter loss of ability to find the strike zone?

Not really. If a pitcer comes in with bases loaded and no outs up by one run, if he gives up a sac fly, then strikes the next two guys out, it becomes a blown save.

Correct. I really meant that it's unlikely that all of them are cheap like that. Especially since most closers start the inning with no one on base.

SteelSD

Ya' know, I love Sean Casey and always have. But he's never been a smart baseball player. For the props he gets for leadership and clubhouse presence, he cashes a lof of chips in with a lack of mental acuity on the baseball field. That's why he's so easy to induce into a DP. He's got to be more tuned into what he's going to see in those situations. Yet he always go up hacking.

How about the other 5?

We complained bitterly about Graves' 82%. In fact, since the middle of last year, when Graves sported a 7.50 ERA, be saved 18/22, or about 82%.

Yet Baez is at 54%. With great stuff.

Baez=Hawkins.

Some pitchers can bend over backwards yet not break. Others don't bend, but break at the first sign of trouble.

Count Baez and Hawkins in the latter camp.

I don't have any doubt. I don't know if I've ever seen ever hit balls harder than him. If he squares the baseball it's gone. Without getting ahead of ourselves too much, he has a CHANCE to be a once in a generation power hitter.

Just got back from the game, so I'm sure this has been hashed over.
Exciting, exciting, horrrible game.
Milton's GS inning. I don't remember how the first batter got on base - walk I think - but just horrible baseball. Bunt in front of Larue and he goes to second - aggressive and stupid. Next batter dribbles it down the first base line going foul and Milton picks it up and goes to first. Stupid and stupid. Milton goes 2-0 on the next batter and we all know what happens next.
Griffey, Dunn and Larue can't get the ball out of their gloves.
Thank God the Tampa Bay third baseman got the same flu in the ninth.

But Willy Mo made it all better in the end and I'm not giving up the bobblehead.

Oh yea', it was a bad baseball move, no doubt. But come on, the fan in you had to love it. Right?

Actually, it was very smart (Freel's first to third)... he was safe all the way and he knew it. I can't describe how it played out, but if you could have seen the "big picture" on the field of the entire play, it really wasn't a reckless move on his part... they didn't have a shot in "heck" to throw him out.

I was at this game.

Wily Mo Pena has to be the strongest player I have ever seen. It looked like he hit the first homer off the handle. On the second homer, he appeared to get under it and still hit it half way into the upper deck. I thought it was going to hit the scoreboard!

Dunn looked to be fooled on his homer, but still hit it out. These boys are strong.

I hope the Reds keep Dunn and Pena around a long time...bat them 3rd and 4th in the lineup and watch them hit 50 homeruns a piece.
