Luke Hudson vs David Wells.

Red Leader

Boston hopes David Wells and Manny Ramirez continue their resurgence as the Red Sox and Cincinnati Reds play the second of three games at Fenway Park.
Wells began his first season in Boston 2-4 with a 6.81 ERA over his first seven starts before settling down to go 2-0 with a 2.32 ERA over his last three outings. The left-hander has pitched at least seven innings and walked none over that span.

Wells threw eight innings of four-hit ball to lift the Red Sox to a 4-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday.

``I don't think I made a bad pitch,'' Wells said. ``It's just something that's a rarity. When you feel that good, you just go with it.''

While Wells has turned things around on the mound, Ramirez seems to have broken out of a rare slump at the plate.

Ramirez's three-run home run led Boston to a 10-3 win over Cincinnati on Monday.

Ramirez has 13 homers and 49 RBIs. He went 2-for-5 to raise his batting average to .254 and is hitting .339 in his last 14 games.

``Manny's going to hit,'' teammate Jay Payton said. ``Everybody gets on him because his average isn't .320, but he's still hitting some homers and driving in runs and Manny's going to have his (usual) numbers at the end of the year.''

The Red Sox pounded out 16 hits against the Reds, one day after notching 17 in a win over the Chicago Cubs.

Monday's loss was just the second in seven games for Cincinnati.

First baseman Sean Casey went 1-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to nine games. Casey is batting .378 (14-for-37) since June 4 to lift his team-leading batting average from .313 to .325

He was a light stick, but he ended up with a respectable .248 career BA, hit .291 as a career high in '77, and from '77-81 hit in the .270s. If Dane could even sniff those numbers, we'd have ourselves a legit prospect. Sundberg was no slouch at the plate in his prime and was one of the best defensive catchers of the period.

Ok, I found it:

Reds center fielder Ryan Freel initially charged the well-struck ball, but had to change direction quickly as the ball sailed over his head and rolled to the wall.

"I don't know for sure if he catches it or not, 'Reds manager Dave Miley said. "If we do catch it, it's still a 0-0 game and maybe things work out different."

AND

"I thought he pitched better," Miley said of Milton. "The ball in center that Freel broke in on, if we do make that play it can change the whole complexion especially the way Clement was throwing."

Agreed. I said this earlier today in another thread:

And then…THEN…I read today that Miley pinned the game's turning point on Freel for failing to catch that drive into center. A center field that Griffey patrolled for a decade, and begged to play. Scrappy has never played in that large and quirky field and has only started in CF four times according to Hal. Does Miley defend Freel's inexperience? Does he take the blame for putting a man in position to fail when a better choice had volunteered? No. Our "players' manager" threw his player under the bus.

If Freel lost this game, then it's because Miley bet on inexperience and went against the advice of his veteran player. If Wily Mo lost this game, then it's because DanO demoted AK right before interleague play. Either way, it's bush to blame Freel for such stupid decision making.

Not to pick on Casey during his troubling time but how does a death in the family make only 1st base too difficult to play but still hit?

My ability to concentrate was greatly affected after my sister passed away. Even though it was months later when softball season rolled around, I was not at my sharpest in the field defensively. I played shortstop and needed to be mentally right there for every pitch, but I just wasn't. Now batting was a different story, since I guess it's a shorter time span and easier to focus in on one at-bat every few innings. I don't know it's true for everyone, but I experienced defensive trouble, but offensively, I was just fine that year. Just my personal experience.
