NBA, players' union reportedly close to deal

Lawyers for the National Basketball Association and its players' union will meet in New York Tuesday, and the two sides are thought to be close to agreeing in principle on a six-year collective bargaining agreement which would end the threat of a lockout, according to a report in The New York Times.
The Times, citing two unnamed sources close to the negotiations, also reported that a deal could be wrapped up in the next 24 to 72 hours.
Commissioner David Stern and players' union executive director Billy Hunter traded barbs during the first week of the finals. But it appears that both sides are eager to establish a new collective bargaining agreement.
Three players and three owners joined lawyers and league executives for a Friday bargaining session, which lasted close to 12 hours. After the meeting, NBA deputy commissioner Russ Granik reported significant progress while Billy Hunter sounded optimistic.
If a deal is reached this week, it will still need to be ratified by the union, which is having its annual meetings in Las Vegas on June 27.
