Who's your favorite musician, not known to a lot of the general public?

Mine is Mike Portnoy, drummer for Transatlantic and Dream Theater.

Well as far as singers goes - Leah Salonga - Filipina singer was the original "Kim" in the Broadway Musical "Miss Saigon" She is a beautiful lady with a beautiful voice.

Also a buddy of mine is really into Paul Westerberg - He is pretty well known but not in a "pop" way.

In terms of country music singer song/writer Skip Ewing

In terms of songs.... I really like alot of the stuff from the soprano soundtrack...one song from season 5 'Your'e Wrapped in My Memories like Chains"

Not sure of the Artist but really like the song.

Paul Westerberg is great, but he is acutally pretty well known. Anyone heard of James McMurtrey?(sp?) He is really good, has some really great songs.

And there is a good reason why the general public doesn't want to know these characters RL. ;)

One I have always liked, and is known in Chrstian circles, but not so much by the general public, is guitarist Phil Keaggy. Hendrix called him the greastest acoustic gutiarist he had ever heard. That's a complement. And especially to a guy who is missing fingers on one hand. He started out with the band Glass Harp. I still have his fisrt solo album "What a Day".

This goes back a few years, but.....

I remember seeing Stevie Ray Vaughan on SNL in 1986 and I was mezmerized. But, of course, he never had any songs that played on Top-40 radio, so he was virtually unknown to the masses and even the teenage aspiring guitarists like myself at the time.

From that time until his death four-and-a-half years later, I would force my friends to listen to him and I would force them to agree that SRV was placed here by divine intervention.

Of course, after his death, everyone suddenly claimed he or she had enjoyed SRV for many years.

Isn't Zakk Wylde pretty well known from his Ozzy Osbourne guitarist gig???you'd think that. but unless a person is heavily into rock and metal or a guitar player, it would seem they have no idea who he is.

as part of my sociology research paper, i did a couple of tests. one of which was to ask 50 people who went to last year's OzzFest to answer the following questions:

1. Name 5 bands from the show not called, Black Sabbath, Slipknot, or Judas Priest.
42 of the 50 did.

2. Name one musician from the show other than Ozzy Osbourne, Judas Priest of Slipknot.
33 of the 50 did.

3. Name a member of Ozzy Osbourne's band (not Black Sabbath).
20 of the 50 did.

Paul Thompson--drummer, Roxy Music (okay, a lot of people have heard of him, but he really is the greatest drummer ever).

I was going to mention Phil Keaggy as well...great guitarist but the complement from Hendrix never happened...it is a popular folk story but again, it never happened...it has also been reported that Clapton said the same thing...which he did not.

but...LISTEN....PHIL ROCKS!!!

Nuno Bettencourt formerly of the group Extreme. Get way from the song "More Than Words" and you'll find one of the more truly phenomenal guitarists out there. Right up there with John Petrucci IMO, although vastly different in style. Listen to "Flight Of The Wounded Bumble Bee".

I always tried to mold my style after Nuno's. I really liked the way he concentrated on rhythms first and then the solos. He was truly a complete guitarist.

Don't know if you ever heard of Lillian Axe, but they were also a great band not known to the general public. Their guitarist (Stevie Blaze) was also a very talented musician, with a lot of classical influence.

Got to listening to some of my old 80's stuff and came upon old White Lion c.d.'s Have to think that if Vito played in a band that had a singer other than Mike Tramp, he would be more widely known. Heck of a musician he was though. I say was, becuase I've heard that he has a hand injury that severely restricts his movement and he no longer plays. Ravenlord, if you happen to look at this post, maybe you can confirm this for me.http://www.steinbergerworld.com/ads/88bratta.jpg

i agree entirely with that, and no, he doesn't play anymore professonally. he broke his hand in a bar fight, and part of the bone damaged his nerves. since he's admittedly no where near the musician he once was, he feels it would be wrong of him to perform as is now.

Lemmy from Motorhead has to be one of the ugliest men alive not on the Rolling Stones.
speaking of Lemmy, i am a huge fan of Hawkwind, Lemmy's band before Motorhead.
i'm also a big fan of The Mekons, who've toiled in obscurity for at least a couple of decades.
and, i am the proud owner of the only album made by Orchestra JB...and i like it.
Put Klaatu, The Faces, Blue and one hit wonders Nena on that list, as well. Nena might have had other hits, but i enjoy a lot of their other work, as well.

Keaggy really is incredible. I've met him on a couple occasions. I think the Hendrix quote was from Rolling Stone, but I could be mistaken.

I'm also really into the music of Matt Molloy and Laurence Nugent, both excellent Irish flute players.

A couple:

Texas Son - a texas blues band based in Rochester, NY. Had some regional success a while back - truly terrific guitar work and a hoot to see live.

The second his a personal friend, Erik Bachsmith, singer-songwriter who just never had it in him to take risk and get his material truly heard.

Cool. Glad to hear they're making an impression outside the ski resort circuit of the Rockies.

I'm not usually a devotee to "hippie groove bands," but they take it to a different level.

I agree. Have you seen Hamsa Lila? They're a disturbingly good looking bunch of hippies who play traditional african string instruments. Kind of grooves like the jame in "The Other One".

Going to see Cracker/Camper here on new years.
