Agreed, but when you're going up against Mark Prior (a guy who's likely to make any lineup look foolish) you might as well take a shot on a small sample size, particularly if it's a guy who's been playing well.

When facing a guy like Prior, I'm of the opinion that it's even more important to work probability to your favor and tend to feel that good hitters in the right positions do that regardless of small sample pitcher matchup data. It's true that a Mark Prior does a good job of making that moot because he's a probability demon in his own right. That being said, I'm more concerned that small sample size managing is indicative of both long-term inappropriate methodology implementation.

Narron does this kind of stuff all the time. It's super when his M.O. tells him to put a good hitter in a good spot. But it's still pulling numbers from a hat.

Kearns takes strike three called. That pitch was only about 5.5 inches outside. Prior should be throwing a shutout with a strikezone like that.

I know I'm whining a lot today, but these huge strikezones get to me.

Ok, am I the only guy not all that impressed with Mark Prior today?

The guy's velocity is really down. Movement is good on the breaking pitch, but he's constantly been bailed out by a home plate umpire who has an exceptionally liberal strike zone (particularly down).

I'm kinda' "Eh..." about him right now.

I'm with you on the numbers from a hat thing, though part of me is happy see him showing any level of stat awareness in the wake of Dave Miley.

IMO the real problem is that when Freel's not in the lineup, the Reds' 1-2 punch (admittedly punchless over the past week) becomes a big of an art project. I'd be tempted to stick Casey in that slot (assuming Jr. and Dunn are ensconced at 3 and 4 at the moment), even with his DP proclivities. LaRue's got a .362 OB this season so I don't see him as a bad choice, even if the decision-making process needs refinement. Olmedo and Kearns probably were the also-rans in today's choice and I'm fine with LaRue if that's the case.

I highly disagree with Jason Standridge pitching the 8th, going through the middle of the Cubs order in a tight game, whether or not it works out. Belisle should be the one up right now, and if he's doing the ninth, then Weathers should be in the 8th. Standridge is due for a correction any day, I'd rather not find out up one run late.

I agree. Would use Weathers right now. Hope we're both wrong.
