Well, Casey is the team's best hitter vs. LH pitching. As long as you run Freel to counteract the DP, it's OK.

And he also foul tips pitches all the time--which suggests that he's guessing the right pitch and not timing it (vision/depth of field problems?) or his bat's too slow.

Most CF's would get to that ball without having to make an over the shoulder basket catch. Griffey has a great glove, I don't question that. I question his ability to get to balls. He might be the slowest CF in the game.

Claussen has to learn to go after weaker hitters. He lost this inning when he went full on Davis. When up 1-2 against the pitcher, you have to put him away. Instead, he went full against him and had to throw a strike. Davis then hit the ball well and got a triple.

Agree Griffey should have got there, but Claussen is hurting himself by nibbling (or just lacking control).

sending Olmedo likley cost a run

In that situation, you go on contact. You can't wait to see if the ball goes through, because you might easily not score on a ground out. Even if you get thrown out, you make them make the play, and you still have the tying run on 3rd.

And Griffey likely gets walked if runners are on second and third.

When you bunt with runners on first and second and no outs, you are playing for 2 runs. You are trying to increase the chances of the runner on first scoring. With the added bonus of vastly increasing the chances of the other runner scoring.

It's like when you bunt with a runner on first and no outs, you are playing for 1 run, not 0 runs.

It is mindboggling how poor the Reds are at executing bunt plays both on offense and defense. I am aware, and tend to agree, with the criticisms of bunting with good hitters, and would not have had Freel bunting in the top of the eighth. But there is NO EXCUSE for our infield defenders to not be well-versed in dealing with the bunt, and there is even less excuse for our pitchers, who can't hit anyway, to not be able to get one down when asked. This may not cost us that many runs in the long run, but it is such an easy thing to fix, with just a little practice.

It's really kind of sad in a way. Casey is a hitting machine, but it seems it's never when it counts. He'll forever be remembered in his last years here as a rally killer and a sure double killer. When he came to the Reds from Cleveland, I would never have believed it.

Depends on the situation. In a normal situation, the decrease in scoring chances for more than 1 run is pretty marginal. With the heart of your order coming up, I suggest bunting with Freel for Casey/Griffey was a defensible move.

Before today, teams were hitting a combined .572 OPS against him. Now, no one expected that to continue, but I'm unclear as to why there's a suggestion that he had been lucky. It's not like he has been giving up a ton of baserunners and leaving them stranded.
