View Full Version : Another Attempt at a RedsZone locator pin map

I know that there have been a couple of earlier attempts at a RedsZone pin map that ultimately fell by the wayside due to vandalism or limitations of the system. I came across a new site offering free group-pinnable maps that use Google Maps as the base map and figured it would be fun to try this again.

This one is simple. You enter your RedsZone username and zip code and the system puts a pin in the center of your zip code. There is also a field for "shoutouts." I don't have any clever ideas for how to use shoutouts, but don't post anything there that you wouldn't be allowed to post here. The vandalism on the previous versions drained the fun out of this effort, so as a pre-emptive measure: Mean-spirited, provocative shoutouts and fake member entries can and will lead to a member entry being deleted. Feel free to PM me or update this thread if you see anything problematic on the map.

11 pins already!

There is an option to re-center the map on a zip code, so I chose 45202, the zip code for GABP. I also zoomed in the default view to about a 1-state radius around GABP to better resolve the folks who live within a few hours drive of Cincinnati.

It said my zip code was invalid. So I put in a nearby zip. Same city, but wrong side of the I-10 interstate.

Doh, apparently the shoutouts don't overwrite, but rather add to each other.

So mine are a little redundant.

Mine says St. Mary's, IN, but I don't think they would let me go there.

Mine says "Lockland, OH" based on the fact that part of my zip code is in Lockland, but that's definitely not where I live. :)

No, its kind of funny. Notre Dame has a post office, which is the zip code I used. Most of the time it shows up as Notre Dame. But, along with ND, there is the all girl school St. Mary's. And since I am not of the right sex (not to mention I don't think they have a grad school, so there's 2 reasons), I cannot go there, which makes it kinda funny. That's all. Furthermore, both of them are in South Bend, so none of it matters.

Mine says Parkdale while I actually live in Forest Park, but that's just a minor quibble.

Click and drag on the map.

My pin does not show up. We need a bigger map. Paint's suggestion of dragging the map is a good solution. There is also a zoom control on the upper left side of the map. It takes a lot of zooming out to get Texas in there, too. ;)

OK - I've done the "Add Yourself" option twice and I'm not showing up at all. I guess Bellefontaine doesn't exist. I must be in Pleasantville!

I messed up and added myself twice, trying to hit the marker on the U of Akron law library. It says the actual zip for Akron U doesn't exist.

I did that this morning and it told me I had an invalid zip code. My zip is 20165.I emailed the company about this invalid zip code. If they fix it, I'll post an update.

FWIW, 20165 shows up as valid in this zip code mapper.

My excitement at seeing another RedsZoner within 100 miles was quashed when I discovered in the member list that there is no jimbroznan registered here. Anyone want to claim "jimbroznan" before I delete the entry?

On a scale of 1 to Dork, how bad is it that I can remember that, but I can't remember any of my friend's cell phone numbers without consulting the phone book?

I was fishing a couple weeks ago and drop my cell phone in the river. I was just thankfull that it worked enough so I could write everyone's number down. There would have been no way I could have remembered anyone's. Heck, I don't even know my fiance's number anymore.

Oh, and if that's a dork, then I am one too.

The mapping site has gotten more popular, so the link for the map has changed. Perhaps a mod or admin would be kind enough to update the link in my original post? :)
