I think they are just too wound up to play. (too many beanies??? just kidding). Waiting a month to play can do that to you.

This is a key series coming up. USC could start to run away with this. The turnover and not making on 4th down not a good start for Texas.

This has been one ugly NC game. Texas has fumbled three times, USC has blown 3 easy scoring chances with bonehead calls or plays. Texas is lucky or else this would a blowout.

We'll see how USC adjusts in the second half. My gut feeling is Texas hangs on and wins by 10.

I thought it was the right decision, I thought the play call was bad. That's the situation where you call that ONE play you know can get you two yards that no one is expecting. I don't like the idea of a play that could win the game for you you do what everyone thinks you're going to do. Texas was going to score whether they got the ball on the 40 or the 10.

Yeah that last time out was one of the stupidest coaching decisions I can remember. If they had the time out they could have possibly went for a shorter pass at the end and called a time out for a field goal attempt. He basically killed their chances at the end with that time out.

What call is everyone referring to that screwed USC?

The first bad call was Young's knee being down before he flipped the ball to the running back to score the TD. But even if they got that right Texas would have still had 1st and goal at the 10. So they may have scored anyway in the next play or 2.

The other call was the pass that was not called a fumble. It looked like it probably should have been a fumble. That play was reviewed they just did not see enough evidence to overturn it.

What call is everyone referring to that screwed USC?

UT player caught a pass, fumbled and SC recovered at the Texas 40 with about 9 minutes to go. Both announcers agreed it was a catch and fumble but they ruled it incomplete.

USC's OC shoudl be finding a new job. What fool calls a pass play on 2nd and 2 with 2 1/2 minutes left when you are running the clock out.

If USC had brought their brians with them this game would have been a blowout.

The play in the first half where Young was down before he pitched the ball. They were most likely going to score anyway, so i don't think that made a difference.

Fact is, they had a 12 point lead with under 6 minutes to go. They blew it. Their defense stinks. Texas' offense and Vince Young can be stopped.

Reds Fanatic
01-05-2006, 12:41 AM
As much as people will blame the calls this loss is more about USC could not get one yard on the 4th and 1 play. Which is questionable whether you even go for it there or punt to make Texas drive the whole field. Then the last 2 drives Texas went right through the USC defense. If their defense had stepped up on either of those drives no one would be talking about the bad calls.

OnBaseMachine
01-05-2006, 12:44 AM
By the way, after USC sneaked on 4th and inches I turned and told my brother Texas would win this game after that pathetic call. Then came the dumbest player I have ever witnessed: Reggie Bush's lateral. Those two plays cost them atleast 10 points.

Reds Fanatic

One of the big missed tackles came in the last minute Vince Young was scrambling should have been tackled in the middle of the field he ran right through a tackle and was able to get out of bounds which saved them from having to use a timeout.

MWM
01-05-2006, 12:56 AM
I'm not trying to take anything away from Texas, but the only two teams they really had to play this year, USC and Ohio State, they were the benefiiary of REALLY bad coaching decisions that allowed them back in a game they should have lost. You gotta give them credit for taking advantage, but they were pretty lucky to win both of those games due in large part not to bad plays, but bad coaching.

Young was being tackled when he tossed it, and television replays showed his knee was down before it left his hands. Game officials did not review the play and USC coach Pete Carroll did not call a timeout to try to force their hand.

A moment later, a TV shot of the replay booth showed three officials looking closely at the screen in front of them. One official pulled away and shook his head, as if realizing the call had been missed.

As long as we are discussing missed calls, how about the obvious offensive pass interference call against Jarrett, or the intereception by Texas that wasn't allowed?

Texas made enough mistakes-fumbles, missed PATS/FGs, boneheaded penalties-that could have easily cost the Longhorns the game. But they overcame them all to prevail...And not because of officiating.

Officials don't win/lose games....If you don't score enough points and make enough timely defensive stops, you will lose the game, as the trojans did.

Nevertheless, there were three winners tonight:

The resilient Longhorns, led by Vince Young.

The USC Trojans who have nothing to be ashamed of. Heck, they spent the better part of three seasons demonstrating CFB excellence to the world.

Every CFB fan fortunate enough to witness one of the greatest games ever.

By the way, how in the world do the Houston Texans NOT draft Young if he declares himself eligible?

So does this mean that ESPN is going to match Texas up against every great college football team in history to see who the best is? ;)

 I thought at the time that ESPN's series was silly and that the network should first see how USC did against Texas before proclaiming the greatness of the Trojans, even though I expected USC to win.

Excellent point.

Texas made mistakes, too -- missed field goal, missed XP. USC could not capitalize.

Texas was the better team last night. They earned the win.

Hey, I just found out that the refs were Big 10 officials. Now it's all starting to come together. ;)

If the Texas kicker had performed to his norms, this game wouldn't have been as close as it ended up. It would have been a shame for Texas to lose this game by less than 6 because of those missed FGs.

I was surprised by how much inconsistent play there was on both sides of the ball and how many times the ball got loose. Maybe the game balls were supplied by WD-40?

In anticipation of the '06 UT-Ohio State game, I'm hoping for Vince Young to enter the NFL draft. His star will never be higher. Considering that the Texans have the first pick, it might be a great scenario for him.

I find UT fans really insufferable. Since leaving the state isn't an option, I think I'll do my best to avoid them for the next couple of weeks. :)

The Texans will have an interesting choice to make with their 1st pick. They need a lot of things and QB and RB are big needs. Young would be a popular choice but does he have the right tools to be a good NFL QB? Bush would be a no-brainer but the shelf life for an NFL RB is not very long and is shorter if you don't have a decent OL to run behind. Then there's Leinart. He seems to have the pedigree of an NFL QB and the quick success of Carson Palmer here may make him a better choince than Young who could be a great QB but could also be another Michael Vick. If I'm the Saints, sitting at #2, I'm liking what I see for QBs. If I were them I'd hope that the Texans take Bush or Young so they can take Leinart.

I'm guessing that the Texans try to shop their number one draft pick. They need so much help in so many areas that trading the number one pick for a host of lower draft picks could be a good move.

There were bad calls both ways. Much like any game.

Watching Tuesday and Wednesday nite's games brought to mind the old saying. Fans may enjoy watching defense (Tuesday) but it's offense (wednesday) that wins championships.

Right?

I, too, am OK with Texas winning, I think.

Mack Brown left Tulane to find a better gig -- curse him for being "career minded" as a coach.

But, Chris Simms went to Texas, so it can't be THAT bad of a school.
But Dunn is happy!:beerme: (with Texas winning...)

It's shaping up to be a big draft this year. Any chance the Raiders maybe able to nab one of these guys at Number 6?It is quite possible that the first 6 picks in the NFL Draft were all playing on the same field last night. Apologies to the LB from Penn State (name?) who had like 104 tackles versus FSU the other night. Other than the PSU Linebacker Dude--I can see Bush, Young, Leinart, White and Jarrett all being among the first few taken...by any team that finds itself fortunate enough to be picking.

Jarrett's going to go Clarice style? Three years after high school class graduated is the rule. Jarrett's a true sophmore I think.

I'm not sure that Young, or Leinart are the best pro prospect QBs that will be in this draft.

I think VY will dissapoint in the NFL. He's just not a great thrower and NFL scouts seem to agree. Article below:

What a tremendous game played Wednesday night between the Texas Longhorns and USC Trojans.

As much as it was a dream game for fans, it was a dream game for NFL personnel men.

And after checking in with a few of them who carry some pretty impressive credentials, you may be surprised that a great performance by Texas quarterback Vince Young does not necessarily leave NFL teams drooling over his eventual arrival into the NFL. The same goes for USC quarterback Matt Leinart.

Samplings:

"I'd still take Leinart over Young as an NFL quarterback, but Leinart is not a franchise guy in the traditional sense. He's not John Elway, Dan Marino, Peyton Manning or Carson Palmer. Now, really, there aren't a lot of those guys anyway. Alex Smith sure wasn't. When [Texas] blanketed the USC receivers, especially early in the game, you got a glimpse of what the NFL is like. The windows are a lot tighter. Leinart struggled with those. But give the USC coaches credit -- they adjusted and managed to put up, what, over 500 yards against a pretty talented Texas defense?"

Young
"Young is a great competitor, that's the thing you have to like about him. But be careful about his athleticism. It's a great attribute but he doesn't have Michael Vick's suddenness. He's got real good speed, but it's not world-class speed, and you see what eventually happens to the guys in this league -- they get beat up and they slow down. He is strong for a fairly lean guy. And you have to like his size. But if you do the film cut-ups on just his throws from last night's game, you're going to be fairly unimpressed."

"Leinart's clearly a bright guy. He's got better feet than most people talk about. His arm strength is average. He doesn't throw as many pure spirals as you would like. But he's a big guy, he's played a lot of football in a pro-style offense and he's had a lot of success. He's not going to carry a franchise on his back, but if you put talent around him, he's going to be a good quarterback in the NFL. And let's face it, we need more good quarterbacks."

"If Young's performance did anything, it made a case that he should have won the Heisman, not [Reggie] Bush. But that was splitting hairs. That's not a very good USC defense he faced -- didn't Fresno State put up 40 on them? What I like about Young is that he's gotten better every year as far as throwing the football. He does spin it a lot better than he did before. Arm strength, like Leinart, pretty marginal. He won't have the same success running the ball in the NFL, not even close. But he's a leader, he'll generate some excitement, and then he'll get ripped [by the media and fans] when he doesn't dazzle in the NFL like people think. Still, if I were him, I'd probably come out. He needs a lot of work and he might as well start getting it now."

As for Bush, he still projects as the probable No. 1 pick in April's draft by the Houston Texans.

"He still did enough Superman stunts to make you say, 'Wow,'" said one personnel man. "There aren't many players who make you go, 'Wow,' so he's got tremendous value to a team. Maybe he's not a 4.2 guy [in the 4 but he's got plenty of juice."

Now, USC running back LenDale White had all these guys pretty excited.

"That's an NFL back," said one scout. "He's 220 pounds-plus and he will be a big-timer in our league. He won't dazzle, but he's the type of guy with the right team who can win a rushing title and score a lot of touchdowns."

Mel Kiper just said that every starter for USC last night will play in the NFL one day. He said atleast 25 of their juniors and seniors will play in the NFL.

A month back or so Foxsports wrote an article and stated that atleast 40 on the SC team would someday play in the NFL. That's stunning.

Pete Carroll has done an amazing thing at USC. A couple boneheaded mistakes away from having three straight National Championships. USC will be back though. They have two great quarterbacks ready to step in for Leinart- John David Booty and Mark Sanchez. Booty was the #1 rated QB in 2003. I read articles on Sanchez last year while he was being recruiting and remember reading that scouts thought Sanchez was the best high school QB ever recruited.
