Some people just like their ego's stroked. Here we have a guy that has everyone thinking he is this big insider, except he either never tells us anything or what he does tell us doesn't come true.

Hey TC, I see that Jimbo is still GMing the team. I guess you and your pal Hal dropped the ball on that one.

Wait, wait, wait. Don't start getting on TCII's case. The thread was addressed to RSF62. In all honesty, who are the rest of us to respond to it? Yes, it's on the main board, but at the moment, one has to go to profile to check for PMs. Doubt many are doing that.

He's not getting his ego stroked or attention getting. I welcome and enjoy his contributions.

SandyD

Actually, I’ve kind of enjoyed the speculation. So, after a nearly sleepless night, I’ve come to the following conclusion.

The equipment manager was overly excited about the new season, and through the wrong uniforms into the laundry. He washed the home whites in hot water, and the red ran, so now they are red and pink. Here’s the big news, though. Someone from the Reds marketing department awoke from their hibernation and decided the new threads looked cool, so they decided that the pink and red uniforms would become the new road uniforms, and they would get totally new home uniforms that are updated versions of the ones from 1970.

And the guys are tickled … pink! Well, they laughed anyway.

Thanks TCII for clearing that up.

Pink would be a nice change. Maybe a little Maroon mixed in with the Road uniforms.

Cincinnati (AP) - In a stunning move, four teams today have pulled off a major trade involving players, coaches, and minor league instructors.

Cincinnati has traded Ken Griffey Jr. to Detroit, Manager Bob Boone to Philadelphia, and Sean Casey to Pittsburgh. In return, the Reds received Dmitri Young, Pokey Reese, and minor league instructor Ron Oester.

"Upon reading the quotes attributed to Ron Oester, we realized that we did in fact get rid of the wrong individuals," said Cincinnati GM Jim Bowden.

"What this franchise really needs is a 3rd base coach who doesn't know how to give the "stop" sign to a baserunner. We also really need a middle infielder who swings like he's Mark McGwire, but posts offensive numbers that make de la Hoz giddy. And $28 million for an empty .300 hitting OF is a bargain in today's market."

Bowden added, "That Junior guy really is nothing but dead weight. We're sick of guys who have 7 40+ HR and 8 100+ RBI seasons under their belts. His Gold Glove defense is incredibly over-rated, too."

"And thank God I was able to move Casey after signing him to that contract. Within an hour after the signing, I felt like throwing up. He's Pittsburgh's problem now," said Bowden.

Bowden did not have time to answer any questions. "I've got to go - I'm working on another multi-team deal that would bring back Steve Parris, Brett Tomko and Hector Carrasco, and all we'd have to do is give up Adam Dunn," said Bowden, who then left the podium and started dialing his cell phone.

Hang in there, Junior. You'll get your 2,000th hit and your 500th homerun this season. Next year you'll open a new park with a short fence in front of sellout crowds and a larger payroll. You'll be the centerpiece of a great offensive team this year and one of the greatest offensive outfields ever in 2003 (according to some).

Give us two years, and you'll want to play for many, many more.

I tried to calm him down last night. I need more credit hours in Psychology. Senior is still pretty pissed about his situation. Knowing what I know about that I can't blame him one bit.

Let me get to work and find out if any of this has leaked.

BTW, big news rarley makes it in the news BEFORE it happens. Most writers do not publish anything until it has happened. There are a few (Nightengale, Gammons) that go out on a limb and tell you what they hear right away. There is security in that. Fortunately I am not bound by an editor any longer. The only binding I have on this story is Junior himself.

Let me roll my theory out again. A trade to a Florida team. Sr says Jr's only here because he is. But now Sr's not really here.

Jr and Sr could be a package to a Florida team. Although Tampa is way closer to Orlando, the Marlins probabaly make more sense as a trading partner.

They have wealth of young pitchers, and an owner that needs to make a splash.

This has to be one of the funniest things I have seen in a while. Everyone just relax. If it is anything big we will here about it soon enough. To be honest a trade request would not surprise. I think Griffey has been treated like crap in cincy by the media mostly. The fans have expected a lot also. Jr. likes to keep to himself, and that hasn't happened all career. However, I think it has been worse since he has come home.

I would not mind a trade. IF we get a No.1 starter out of it. While I love to watch Jr play
I get tired of his "world's out to get me attitude". I also believe that if the media would leave him alone we would not see this as much from him. I don't think this will ever happen in cincy. So I say trade him and get the best pitcher
you can. We will never win anything until we get a very good No.1 .

Then I would start asking myself whether I wanted to stay in that clubhouse. I might even start wondering if there was possibly a team closer to home to which I could be traded to. I might even narrow that down to just one team. Then I might even offer defer money to play closer to home. I bet my dad would even enjoy managing me.

But then again, I don't play baseball anymore :)

I believe it would be hard for any of us to operate under the scrutiny that Junior does. Everything he says is scrutinized beyond belief. Everything he does is blown out of proportion. He has some clubhouse trash talk and it's taken personal by his teammates. He leaves early for medical attention and it's considered special treatment. Yes, it'd be hard for me to take.

Folks,

if Jr wants to be traded, you can be assured that we won't get a #1 pitcher out of it.

It is just like when he demanded to get out of Seattle. We sure didn't give up much to get him.

If Jr says "trade me to Florida", most likely, we get one of their extra young enigma pitchers and a couple of prospects. Certainly not a #1.

Blondini
02-27-2002, 01:32 PM
Putting two and two together (it may add up to 4, and it may not, ya never know):

Item #1: That Junior-friendly article by Seattle Times writer and apparent Junior confidante Larry Stone. The tone of the article beats anything I've read lately from the various Reds-specific Cincinnati and Dayton newspapers.

Item #2: On a local Channel 5/NBC affiliate program called "Evening Magazine", there's supposed to be a piece on still-close-friend Jay Buhner tonight. One of the "hook" ad spots for the program is a statement by Jay, "Junior would come back here in a heartbeat".

I don't know of the context of Jay's remark (yet), but I do know he's been saying that publicly for the past year. I really can't speculate any further, because I cannot imagine any circumstances the Mariners and the Reds would reach some common ground on a trade-back.

Actually, if Jr. wants to be traded, you can be sure we will get a #1 pitcher out of it, or two. Jr. left Seattle with a year left on his contract, he now has a very CHEAP long term deal. The Reds could get more than ever for Jr. now.

though i do think junior probably enjoyed the atmosphere in the clubhouse in seattle better than here (no one ever backstabbed him there with silly stories about jokes made in the clubhouse), there was still a lot of bad blood between him and Gillick and bad blood between him and the fans (especially the loonies who threatened to kill him). But anyway, please let us know what is said in the interview...

All we know from what TC has said is that it's about Junior, it's not good news and the local media may not pick up on it.If it were a trade demand, it would be headlining ESPN. Whatever it is, it was probably said in a moment of despair. Yes, I think it will blow over.

Junior is one of the few players who can immediately increase attendance in your park. Plus he is currently signed to one of the sweetest long-term contracts ever put on paper (from an organizational standpoint). During the life of that contract, he will probably chase the Aaron (or Bonds) all-time home run record. There is not a player in all of baseball I would trade him for...but if we're talking 2... Say a Josh Beckett and a Brad Penny?... Hmmmm...now you've got me thinking.

sorry scorp, but why would Florida trade two stud pitchers making nothing for a 32 year old making a lot of money when a) They already have a comparable centerfielder in Wilson b)they are not going to take on an 8 year contract when they don't know whats going to happen to their franchise next year c) Junior unfortunately now has "potential clubhouse problem" label thanks to the immature ex-Reds...

That is the funniest thing I have read in a long time. Let me repeat it for those who missed it the first two readthroughs. "They already have a comparable centerfielder in Wilson" Preston Wilson is not even in the same galaxy as Griff Jr.

And as far as b) I strongly doubt Loria would have left the Expos to take over the Marlins if he was going to get contracted. I think he wants to own a team. That team actually needs a big bat, Jr. might go an awful long way towards getting a new stadium down there and he is on a sweetheart deal. I think he would be extremely interested in Jr, in fact maybe even enough to trade us Penny and Castillo for him. If they resign floyd and had Floyd, Jr. and Miller as their 3,4,5 hitters, that pitching would have all the run support they needed to be contenders. So don't count them out.

Guys,

Jr can say "trade me to Florida (or whatever) or I'm going to retire".

No one is going to do Bowden any favors. If Jr wants out, you can bet his team of choice will hold the Reds hostage, just like we did to Seattle.

I hope Jr doesn't want to be traded though. Despite the opinion of some on this board, dumping Jr and Larkin is not going to make us a better team, even if we can spend all their salaries on other players.

They couldn't have Floyd, Jr, and Millar batting 3-4-5 because Jr has to hit third. It would have to be Jr, someone else, someone else hitting 3-4-5

Am I reading this wrong or are we being told that something big and not particularly good is up with Jr., but that we might never hear about it?

If it's something we'll never see and that the local media might not even notice (not that they're the sharpest tools in the shed, but you'd think they'd catch something obvious), then how bad can it be?

TeamClark, ignoring the potshots, is there any way you can clarify what it is you've told us?

I'm having a hard time with the concept of big news that the media might not catch. Is this something that could affect Jr. staying with the team in this or next season? Is this something that might cause some sort of business shakeup up (e.g. GM, manager, COO, staff)? Is it something that involves warring factions on the club (e.g. "Sean Casey and I can't co-exist")?

I'm not asking you to reveal more info than you think you should, but you've already dropped some fairly loaded hints. I'd just like to get an understanding of what the general flavor of this is or what the potential fallout might be. Right now you've got people speculating wildly as to what something "big" could be.

I'll take your word for it that it was not your intent to do that. I've got no reason to believe otherwise. All I'm saying is, can you find some phrasing that gives us a clearer idea as to what sort of thing this is and what it's magnitude might be without spilling all the beans?

I've been trying to find ways to give everyone an idea of what is going on. I have a sense of laoyalty to the Redszone family. Many of you have become close friends and I have left seats for many others during the 2001 season. My biggest loyalty is to Junior in this case. He told me some things as a friend and some as a writer. I'm doing my best not to cross any line. I would much rather someone else break this story and get the cold shoulder.

Believe me I want to write the story as badly as you want to read it.

The meat of the story involves the discussion with Jim Bowden. Most of which I just can not tell you. The outcome of the meeting, which is yet to be determined, would indeed have an effect on whether Junior remains a Red. If cooler heads prevail and certain measures are taken this will be a non-issue. To my knowledge the beat writers know about a meeting they just do not know what was said. If they write anyhting it will be that there was a meeting. I do not forsee that.

This chaos REALLY makes me want to stick around. What IF Griffey has demanded a trade? How many of you will turn on him? Turn back the clocks two years, and think back on what Seattle went through in the weeks leading up to the trade. Oh, the thought of the serious crow that could be potentially on your plate! I seriously, truly, completely live for just such an occasion.

TC,

So you are telling us, Junior is going to run this team or tell Bowden what must be done? You have to be kidding me, right?

A player is gonna tell the organization what to do? Didn't Griffey say he did not get into these things in an earlier report? I think he did.

Is this the news? Trust me, when I say this.......Griffey is going no where. Bowden wouldn't be able to come out of his house and show his face in public. He would be ran out of town, just like Boston did Buckner a while back.

I don't care who speaks to whom about anything with this team. If it happens, I will eat some crow, but I know it won't happen. Why would it?

Bob Boone was not and is not my first, or even tenth, choice to manage the Reds, and I would generally be in favor of his replacement by someone else, but if he is fired expressly because Junior demands it, then no manager should ever expect to be in charge of the Reds, and I doubt any competent manager would want the job. Such a result would have to harm team discipline and harmony, and I hope this is not the story that is in the works.
