Also notable is the move of Russ Nixon from manager of the Astros' rookie affiliate in Greeneville, Tennessee to a position as a roving instructor in the Houston system. Nixon, entering his 54th season of professional baseball, is a former manager for both Cincinnati and Atlanta and has been a coach at the major league level with the Reds, Expos and Braves.

So Nixon's basically become Wowbagger, the Infinitely Prolonged, travelling the minors to insult every kid he runs across.

Russ as a member of the legendary Bentley Post American Legion team got throw out the first pitch at a Reds game back in the 50's too... kinda like Jim Kelly and the punt - pass and kick

Yeah, you should have seen their operation. Chartered bus, perfect uniforms, more equipment than three teams would need, managers.... it was like playing Montgomery Brewsters boys.

Actually Russ got to manage the Redslegs for the rest of the '82 season and the '83 season. Made front cover of the '83 Media guide. Improved from 61 wins to 74 when he managed. Started an OF of Gary Redus, Eddie Milner & Jeff Jones. Not afraid to play kids - but hey, in '83 all he had were the kids and Mario Soto.

Got let go when Howsam regained the Reds FO. He wanted Vern Rapp probably as reward for meritious service because of Howsam's working relationship with Rapp during the '70's when Vern was heading up the AAA Indianapolis club.

How old is Russ? 75 or so?

Thought Russ got an undeserved bad rapp.

Glad to hear he's still making the rounds.
