View Full Version : Songs Whose Title Are Not in the Lyrics

I'm not sure why I always found it interesting when songwriters title a song with words that are not found in the song- or at least aren't represented as given in the title, or are not in the chorus.

Some examples:

Bizarre Love Triangle- New Order (I'm convinced this is why the song never hit it big though released several times as a single).

Weekend In New England- Barry Manilow (I think he says something about spending time in New England, but the title isn't in the song).

Save a Prayer- Duran Duran (I could be wrong, but I believe the lyric is "Don't say a prayer for me now, save it 'til the morning after...)

Imitation of life- REM (I think it's in the song but not in the chorus)

Can anyone think of some more examples?

Subterranean Homesick Alien by Radiohead

Obviously a play on Dylan, but nowhere does this phrase appear in the song...actually I think "alien" is the only one of the three words that does.

I think there are a lot of these but that's the one that comes to mind because I know their guitarist thought the name of the song was stupid for exactly that reason.

edit: Come to think of it, this rule applies to about half of Radiohead's songs.

"Young Turks" by Rod Stewart. This comes to mind immediately because remember hearing djs say this about a thousand times.

And many more, of course.

they only say "save a prayer" at the very end - in the video it's when they're climbing the steps to the temple. :)

All of DMB's numbered songs - #34 #36, #40, #41

I guess they hit a block in the creativity department or something. Funny thing is those four songs are probably all among the "fan favorites" and rarer songs to hear live. All of them are incredible songs not lacking in thought and creativity.

This is kind of a technicality but in Rod Stewart's Maggie May, the word "Maggie" is in there but not "Maggie May". Also in Billy Joel's "Scenes From an Italian restaurant", "Italian Restaurant" is in there but not the whole title.

But in keeping with the spirit of the thread, "Goodnight Saigon" by Billy Joel.

My favorite one picked up so far: Selling the Drama.

I always loved that title and the fact that it was nowhere in the song made it even cooler. I also forgot about "Train in Vain," which is just an awesome song. I don't think I've ever changed the channel when it was on.

Another one I thought of:

True Faith- New Order
