My wife and I heard the heartbeat on Wednesday, so I guess it's safe to announce that we're having a baby.

I'm not nervous at all, thanks in part to the pages and pages of fatherly advice I've absorbed from my fellow RedsZoners.

The baby is due in September. I'll post a picture of Ken Griffey Jr. Footstool soon after. Rest assured, he/she will be wearing a baby-sized Reds hat in the photo (the same hat Papa Johnny Footstool wore when he was a toddler back in 1975).

Congratulations, Johnny! You are in for life's most wonderful ride. Don't let the sun set on any day without realizing how fortunate you are to be chosen for life's most important undertaking!

The child will be raised by a Reds/Bengals fan, so he/she already has a leg up in life. :D

That combination might not be good for the guitar with the little feller is about two years old! Don't give it both at once!

I'll go cheap on the first few guitars.

Ditto what Creek said. I haven't really slept since my son was born in '00.
That's not so bad, though- I probably slept too much anyway. At home, under my desk at work, at Bengals games...

Being a dad is a lot of work, and it has changed the way I live, and I'm a better man for it. Joy to you and best of luck!

Congrats Johnny. It'll be the best and most rewarding ride for you ever (despite the whole sleep thing!). Our daughter is 4 now, but my (lazier)sleep habits have never been restored despite her being a great Through-the-night sleeper since day one. But when she is ready to be awake, she is AWAKE and so is everyone else!!

But it is all so very worth it, a million times over! Best to you and the missus.

Yeah, we're going to find out. We plan everything out, so we need to have all the information in advance.

It's good to know. And not just for the what color to paint the room reason. As soon as we found out, *the baby* became creek jr (vs creekette). Suddenly you are bonding with your son or daughter, not just the baby.

Johnny, one thing I forgot to mention earlier: Mama Footstool should prepare herself to hear the same questions over and over throughout the pregnancy and beyond. She will get sick of hearing them. People are only trying to be nice, show interest, and make conversation, but they don't realize that the questions they are asking are the same one's she has answered 1,001 times in the past week alone. My wife and I joked that we should prepare a little card with a FAQ on it and just hand them out at the beginning of every conversation. Among the more popular ones that she should prepare herself for:

When are you due?
Do you know if it's a boy or girl?
Have you been sick much?
Are you excited?
Are you scared?
What does Johnny think?

Since we had a two-year-old at the time of the birth of our second baby last fall, we even got the question "What does her brother think?" We were like "We don't know. He's two years old! He hasn't discussed it with us!" We didn't actually say that, but we thought it. How do you answer a question inquiring as to what a two-year-old thinks?

After the baby is born, prepare answers for:

Are you going to have any more?
Does the baby sleep much?

Like I said, people are just being nice, so you remain patient, smile, and answer the questions over and over. At least people care, I guess. :)

Ahhh, small talk! When you're a youngster, you have the twice-a-year fielding of these questions:

Are you glad school's out?
Are you ready for school to start?
What grade will you be in?
