Pete Mackanin, the Pirates' interim manager after Lloyd McClendon was fired in September, yesterday was named the Cincinnati Reds' advance scout. Mackanin had been assigned to manage the Pirates' rookie-league team in Bradenton. Littlefield said he had no immediate replacement for the Bradenton opening.

Nice to see Krivsky revamping the minor league scouting right away.

Good move. Gene Bennett's reports were illegible and often landed in the trash. This addresses a MAJOR complaint from the staff.

Actually, that seems like a brilliant move for a scout. If his guys pan out, he's a hero. If they don't, he can say, "That's not a 7, it's a 3."

Just in case someone doesn't know (I didn't know either before looking it up): The job of an advance scout is to scout the Reds opponents about five days ahead before they play against them. His reports will then be used as basis for example how to pitch certain players.

Yes indeed, The Duke is not messing around with whole scouting and minor league thing. He's definately shaking things up and making things happen. Gotta appreciate that.

From The Enquirer:

Since Krivsky took over 10 days ago, assistant GM Dean Taylor is the only top official to retain the same job description.

Director of stadium operations Brad Kullman was fired. Director of player development Tim Naehring was moved to minor-league field coordinator. Director of international scouting Johnny Almaraz got the added title of director of player development.

Director of scouting Terry Reynolds retains his title but reports to Buckley.

Krivsky also hired Bob Miller as director of baseball administration and Scott Nethery as special assistant to the GM/player personnel.

the same Pete Mackanin who was involved in the Don Stanhouse for Willie Davis blockbuster trade of '74 which still has the baseball world talking?

seriously, it is nice to see Krivsky isn't afraid to make changes to the club. this team needs some new blood.
