"Nice day at the office for Mr. Claussen. Aside from a strong showing on the mound -- three scoreless, allowing two hits and a walk -- Claussen drove in the Reds' only runs so far.

With LaRue (HBP) and Denorfia (single) on second and third with two out, Claussen cued one down the right-field line for a two-run double. I'm sure he's already talking smack to Dunn about it...

Claussen's out and Matt Belisle's in for the top of the fourth"

Claussen helps his own cause vs. Phils
Pitcher hits two-run double in Grapefruit League win
By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com

Reds at the plate: Reds pitcher Brandon Claussen picked himself up with a two-run double down the right-field line with two outs in the second inning. It gave Cincinnati a 2-0 lead. Pinch-hitting in the fourth, Scott Hatteberg picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice play to second base. Rick White followed with a scoreless inning and one strikeout. Earl Snyder put a bow on it with a two-run home run in the eighth inning off Aaron Fultz.

Phillies at the plate: Alex Gonzalez's fourth-inning RBI single to center field scored Ryan Howard with Philadelphia's first run. Sal Fasano led off the fifth with a home run to left field off David Weathers.

Reds on the mound: In his first Grapefruit League start, it was smooth sailing for Claussen. The lefty allowed two hits over three scoreless innings with a walk and two strikeouts. Trying to earn a spot on the staff, Matt Belisle worked one inning and gave up one run on two hits with a strikeout. David Weathers allowed one run and one hit with two strikeouts in the fifth before Brian Shackelford threw a perfect sixth inning.

Phillies on the mound: In his second start of spring, Ryan Franklin allowed two runs and four hits with no walks or strikeouts. Brian Sanches worked 1 1/3 innings of perfect relief and struck out three.

Grapefruit League records: Reds, 3-3; Phillies, 4-1.

Up next: The Reds travel up to Dunedin on Tuesday for a 1:05 p.m. ET game against the Toronto Blue Jays. The Phillies move on to St. Petersburg for a 1:05 p.m. ET meeting against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

I would like to see Krivsky swoop in and make an offer for Gavin Floyd. His stock has fallen in the last year. Wayne could probably get him without having to give up one of the big five of Dunn, Lopez, Kearns, Encarnacion, and Pena.

For the record Matt, I know it's been at least a decade since WLW broadcast every spring game, but there damn sure seems like there is still an audience for it. Why can't the first few weeks of weekday games go to 1360 until WLW wants to pick them up? I know you all are sister stations at this point or some such...

Reds notebook
This hit satisfies starter Claussen
BY KEVIN KELLY | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER

SARASOTA, Fla. - Brandon Claussen threw three scoreless innings in his spring training debut Monday at Ed Smith Stadium.

The highlight of the day, the Reds pitcher confessed, dealt not with what happened on the mound in a 5-2 win against the Phillies before 4,538 fans.

"It was the hit, totally," Claussen said.

Last season Claussen had just five hits in 55 at-bats, but in his only at-bat Monday slapped a two-run double down the first-base line. The second-inning hit off Phillies starter Ryan Franklin gave the Reds a 2-0 lead.

The left-hander was just as effective on the mound.

Claussen faced 11 hitters and allowed two hits while striking out two and walking one. He threw 43 pitches during the game and 15 more in the bullpen after he came out.

"I feel like all of us pitchers on the staff are way ahead of schedule," Claussen said. "Sixty pitches today if you count the bullpen, that's getting up there. We're preparing to get through the seventh inning this year, boys."
