"Yes, the Reds are using the DH. No, the Pirates are not. Don't know why, but I'm honestly not curious enough to ask"...

Apparently Bud has notice the lack of improvement in Milton's pitching, and in the best interest of baseball has agreed to allow the reds to us a DH for all home games in an attempt to make the things fair & equitable. ;)

Not sure if on the radio. If you go to MLB not listed yet, but Pitt has some games on so I'm hopeful.

Sorry, nevermind. I figured it out. It was just the sound of Womack sucking.

Looks like we have to change the title because the SS game vs. the Twins is on MLB radio and Pitt game is not showing up. at least not yet.

Are XM subscribers required to pay an additional fee in order to receive MLB audio during the regular season?

An update from Marc.

SARASOTA -- I should have mentioned, cult hero Rob Stratton is one of the players available for today's game against the Pirates. Looking forward to seeing the big fella out there.

Also, I'm thinking it's about time to roll out the spring training edition of the Day-in-the-Life blog. I feel like I should do it for a road game, but I'm not sure when to do it. Tomorrow's almost too short a trip to do it justice. I'll think about it and we'll see. Maybe the Red Sox trip next Tuesday.

Unrelated question, but to listen on the Internet, is it possible to pay to listen to one game? My daughter is working in DC as a Jesuit volunteer this year and would like to pay to listen to Opening Day, but can't afford the whole season. I recall it was like $3.95 a game - do they still do it that way?

Thanks, folks.

Yikes

SARASOTA -- Michael Gosling just hit Sean Casey in the head with a pitch. He went down hard, but he seems OK. He stayed in the game to run the bases, but has been lifted between the top and bottom of the third.

Casey must have a magnet in his head that attracts baseballs to it. This is the 4th or 5th time he's been hit there.

Frank Chance was hit in the head something like 38 times according to some sources, he planted deep in the box and had slow feet. Casey steps into he picth and is bringing his head into the zone, when one comes in high and hard he has trouble limbo-ing out... being a large and not so limber type of player.

Thsi is he sort of thing that can ruin a career, it's the eqivalent of a fighter being punch drunk.

He's been hit several times, but I only remember him being hit in the head one other time. Plus, once in the eye but that wasn't by a pitch... I believe he was fielding when that happened. He also had that one horrible collision.

Young hurlers impressive despite loss
Gosling, Bailey post scoreless outings against Bucs
By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com

Reds at the plate: Jacob Cruz broke a streak of nine in a row retired in the fourth with a double to right field. Cruz was later the third out, trying to score on a Tony Womack single to left field. Quinton McCracken and Anderson Machado each had singles in the game.

Pirates at the plate: Second baseman Craig Stansberry snapped a scoreless tie with a three-run home run that cleared the left-field fence in the fifth. It was Stansberry's second homer this spring. It was 4-0 in the eighth when pitcher Scott Strickland's squeeze bunt scored another run.

Reds on the mound: Seeking a spot in the Reds' rotation, Michael Gosling gave up two hits, a walk and hit a batter -- but worked three scoreless innings. Top pitching prospect Homer Bailey followed and looked impressive in his one scoreless inning. Bailey struck out one and walked one. Making his first appearance of the spring, Josh Hall surrendered Stansberry's homer. Hall was charged with three runs and three hits in one inning. Veterans Chris Hammond and Rick White each worked scoreless innings.

Pirates on the mound: With an outside chance to earn a spot on the staff, Tom Gorzelanny pitched three scoreless innings and allowed two hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Gorzelanny retired his first nine batters in order. Marty McCleary followed with his own three scoreless innings and gave up two hits and no walks while striking out three.

Grapefruit League records: Reds 3-5; Pirates 6-1.

Up next: The two teams play each other again Thursday in Bradenton. First pitch is at 1:05 p.m. ET.

Reds pitcher hits Casey in head, but he's OK

SARASOTA, Fla. -- Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Sean Casey was struck in the helmet by a pitch from Cincinnati Reds left-hander Michael Gosling in the third inning of a split-squad exhibition game Wednesday.

Casey, who had minor swelling above his right eye, lay on the ground for about 30 seconds as the crowd was silenced and Gosling covered his head while crouching in front of the mound. Casey went to first base and left the game after the inning.

Casey faced Cincinnati for the first time since the December trade that sent him to his hometown team. He played eight years for the Reds.

"Yeah, I thought I had some friends over here," Casey said with a laugh. "But, hey, that's baseball. It happens. The ball got away from him. That's the way it goes. You take that risk every time you get in the batter's box."

After the inning, Casey approached Gosling to let him know he had no problem with the pitch.

"I told him, 'It's all right,' " Casey said. "Obviously, he's coming in tight on a 2-0 pitch, and the ball just sailed on him."

Casey received a loud ovation before his first at-bat from the crowd at Ed Smith Stadium. Before the game, he shook hands and embraced numerous fans and former teammates.

One fan shouted out during one of his at-bats: "We love you, Sean Casey! We don't like your shirt, though!"

"There are still mixed emotions," Casey said. "Everything I've done as a big leaguer has been with the Reds. I see those guys over there. I'm a human being. I like the guys in the Pirates' clubhouse. They've been good to me. But I developed a lot of relationships over there, too."

It remains to be seen how long Casey will be in Pittsburgh. He can become a free agent after the season.

Casey said Pittsburgh's recent contract extensions for outfielder Jason Bay and shortstop Jack Wilson are a sign the team has a brighter future.

"When you see the organization signing those guys, you can see there's a commitment," he said. "There are a lot of good things happening here."

As of the start if yesterday Freel has started 4 games had 11 at bats with 2 hits. However, it is early in ST and Dunn and Kearns are only just above him with Lopez one spots behind him.

For the REDS with 10 AB or more, those ahead of Freel in order are McCracken, EE, TWo, Deno, Hatterberg, Kearns and Dunn.
