I have it on TV. (The local Christian TV station is picking up the feed.) Willis is struggling again. On an unrelated note, LF Matt Holliday is a stiff, and has no business being on the team, let alone in the starting lineup!

Random thoughts:

If Buck Martinez deserved the credit for playing a "Jedi mind trick" on Bob Davidson yesterday, then he deserves blame for tonight's loss by playing the JVs. Buck, here's some advice--Michael Young should play! Derrick Lee should play! Matt Holliday should never sniff the field!

Secondly, 11 LOB just won't cut it.

There were runners on 1st and 2nd with one out. the batter hit a sinking fly ball that Griffey caught on the run. The runner at 2nd broke on contact (mistakenly thinking that there were two outs), and Griffey just jogged in and tagged 2nd on his way to the dugout to complete the DP. The runner was halfway between 3rd and home.

Those Krazy Koreans can play. In fact everyone can play. I had illusions of the Dream Team, that would usher in a new renisance of baseball in the United States. I knew the Dominicans were stacked, and Venezuela was going to be good, as well as Japan. Other than those teams, I thought the talent was going to be so far apart that it'd be like watching the Globe-trotters. How'd it turn out? So not only is the U.S. not blowing anyone out, they aren't always winning, and it's not even on ESPN. I'm suprised freakin Knight School, or Playmakers or the or whatever it was called wasn't on instead.

Maybe Berkman, is he hurt? Burrell? I don't even know who I'd want, but you're right. Holliday? When the commitee called him he probably thought it was his teammates playing a prank on him.

The pitching staff is where we're really lacking our star power. Imagine if you added guys such as Prior, Harden, Beckett, Schilling, Johnson, Maddux, Pettitte, Oswalt, Smoltz, Zito, Hudson, Mulder, etc.

Guys like Holliday, Vernon Wells and Randy Winn aren't stars, but they're above average hitters. If they went over to Japan or Korea and played full seasons, they'd likely be one of the best hitters in their leagues. No idea who got invites, who declined or what ... but Dunn, Berkman, Sheffield, Jim Edmonds and Brian Giles are all guys who would add more significant offense presence.

I think the main reason our guys aren't playing well is simply because they're not in regular season form yet. For some of guys, spring training is all about getting back into regular season form, and they're always used to taking all of those six weeks of spring training to get into regular season form. It just takes some time to get back into the routine. Barry Larkin was the epitome of it; he was a pretty lousy hitter in the month of April during his whole career. Once May arrived, Barry took off. He was like clockwork. I think this is largely why people favored some of the latin teams to win it all; a lot of the latin MLB superstars played Caribbean Winter Ball and are in regular season shape.

I think they mentioned during the Japan game that the Japanese spring training starts about a month earlier than our spring training over here, and that's huge. It's also been mentioned quite a bit that Griffey really worked hard during the offseason, so it's likely that he's probably pretty close or at regular season form, and he's been crushing these guys.

If the WBC was played in June or July and more of MLB's stars played, there would be more blowouts and they'd most undoubtedly be in favor of the countries with a significant MLB representation. Of course, there's always going to be games where lesser competition wins. Even a replacement level team in MLB would probably win 40 games per season, and I'd have to think a team of Japanese or Korean all-stars is at least somewhat better than an MLB replacement level team.

Tonight's coverage on XM between Charlier Steiner and Kevin Kennedy has made me want to stick a fork in my ear to make the pain stop.

XM's in game, in house analysts for the WBC - Kevin Kennedy and Mike Schmidt - have really been quite awful.

Schmidt's soliloquys start "In my book...." while Kennedy's "Back when I was a manager..."

When Barry Bonds and Bud Selig were in the booth earlier in the WBC, you could practically hear the smacking sound of lips on butt cheeks in the studio coming out of Schmidt. It was embarrassing.

Kennedy was using the opportunity of the US losing tonight to rail continuously on the arrogant American atheletes all night - talking about how when he becomes manager again his team will take grounders every day and they will play pepper. Saying that the American baseball players are too good to take grounders after watching the Korean team do it today before batting practice.

At one point KK correctly guessed what the Korean manager would do in that situation and rewarded himself by stating, quite frankly, that he still knew that was going to happen and that he "still has the manager frame of mind".

Kennedy was also way behind the action, offering little more than bland cliche'd old baseball stories from his past that had little to do with what was happening on the field.

I know this is XM's first time not using established, team controlled announcers for baseball coverage, but if the station really plans on being a baseball clearinghouse then their announcers better have more credibility than simply being a morning show host on their network or being a well known name in the game.

I've been thinking about Oswalt, Schilling, Johnson, Smoltz, Pettitte, and Maddux the last few days, myself! If the USA is going to participate in this (and I think it's a great idea!), then we have to find a way to get the top talent to want to play in it! Junior, Jeter, ARod, Chipper, D.Lee, Young, Lidge, and the Rocket are a good start, but we need more!

Yep, you've gotta get them to want to play in it and you've gotta get them to commit to getting themselves into regular season shape to play in it. I'm watching the tape delay on the deuce right now, and Dontrelle just doesn't have any control out there. He's either leaving balls right in the middle of the zone that any hitter can crush, or he's missing badly (and just hit a batter in the third as I type this). Dontrelle's a great kid and he seems to be pouring his heart into it with his enthusiasm, but he's just a different pitcher right now than the one he'll be in one to two months.

For some MLB guys, the WBC may not ever be anything more than fun exhibition games, and it's even prevalent in the rules with the pitch counts and whatnot. I have no doubt in my mind that Clemens will take the mound Thursday as if he's pitching a Game 7 WS game, but even if he's dominating, the pitch count restrictions will push him out far earlier than he'd ever want to come out.
