View Full Version : How about Freel at 1b?

What do you guys think about putting Freel at 1b? Since Hattenberg is no great shakes with the glove, why not put Freel's bat there? Ideally, I'd rather have Dunn at 1b and Freel in the OF, but if Dunn has to be in LF, why not Freel at 1b?

I'd rather have Dunn at 1B as well. Put Denorfia in CF, Griffey in LF and Freel at 2B. Freel at 1B? I guess if it's the only way to get his bat in the lineup. I'd much prefer him at 2B or the OF though.

Too small a target for the young guys on the other side of the IF.

I think that would make a bad defense even worse.

But at least Javy gives infielders a wide target!

how about trading some of the mess that Krivsky and O'brien brought in for a real 1st baseman? Put Dunn in left, Freel at 2nd, fire Narron, and let the offense excel.

Dunn at first, Freel at second. Dunn isn't that good in the outfield and could make a good reach at first. He wouldn't have to run around, I think he fits as a first baseman. Freel has a lot of energy and speed, he's a good fit any where in the outfield and especially second base.

fire Narron, and let the offense excel.

Besides getting pitching this should be the Reds #1 priority.

How about putting a catcher's mask on Freel and seeing if Narron will pull one of those stunts that allows Freel to play every position during a game. It's becoming increasingly obvious that he won't let Freel start regularly at any of those positions.

What "mess" has Krivsky brought in? He got a few cheap, low risk OFers who can be jettisoned in a heart beat. As well as a catcher and a few BPers. All low risk. And I think the only reason he brought them in was to simply take a look-see at (no harm there), and possibly try to help the bench.

And yet you feel he can trade this "mess" for a real 1Bman? :dunno:

Freel is an OFer by trade. Why do we keep trying to play him out of position just to get him into the lineup.

If Freel is to be played anywhere, it should be to his strengths, and that should be the OF.

The problem is his durability.

.

Because he's the only legit leadoff guy the Reds have. His offense more then makes up for any problem he might have at second.

Five extra PA's a week and he's at 600 PA's for the season.

FYI : Hattenberg is 6'1", Freel is 5'10".. not that much of a difference.

First off, I've never seen anyone catch a ball with the top of their head, so arm length has to be considered here too. I'm guessing SH has a longer reach as well, so that probably adds another couple inches and a bigger foot will add to a longer reach as well. I know that all sounds ridiculous, but SH has about 6 more inches on freel. 3 in height, prob. 2 in reach atlease, and 1 inch in foot length (that's right, im comparing shoe sizes now)

And Womack/Aurilia at 2nd aren't good D either, put Freel there and be done with it.

Yes, I know.. but if we're willing to accept Freel's below average defense at 2b and 3b (last year).. why not at 1b?

I would've left Dunn at 1b, but I'm trying to work under Narron's constraints.

Narron is going to have Freel on the bench. That's it. :bang:
