They on paper have such a nice balance of power, speed, defense and pitching...

Bartman. Prior, Wood and Z. The Cubs were supposed to beat the Yankees throwing the curse off and passing the torch to a new dynasty. But Bartman screwed it all up. They have not looked the same again. Now Prior has shoulder problems, Wood's losing it, the bullpen is falling apart.

All because of Steve Bartman. Signed: Cubs fan.

Because Cub fans believe a goat cursed them. A GOAT.

If you are a firm believer that farm animals have mystical powers over you and those around you, well, in my opinion, you deserve 100 years of hardship.

i voted injuries, but some of that could be laid on Dusty Baker and Jim Hendry. I hate the Cubs.

The Cubs are always overrated by the media. They have never been as good as the media hype.

I voted Dusty Baker but I really don't care why as long as it continues

''Dustys dugout dice'',rrtflmao.Does it come with a lifetime supply of toothpicks?
But seriously Dusty's refusal to lift his starters time in and time out have not only cost him wins, but very expensive arms.I remember him doing the same thing in San Francisco. He cost them a division title I believe because of that.
Dusty needs to write a book on how to wreck potential Cy Young arms.

Why are the Cubs such underachievers?

Phil Wrigley and the fact that the Cubs, Braves and the Giants where the only 3 NL teams to never feel the touch of Branch Rickey. Plus they didn't value pitching, the Braves took awhile to catch on but they eventually did.

Bingo.

And I'm thinking that the 2006 Cubs are a particularly bad model for that franchise.

And I'm thinking that the 2006 Cubs are a particularly bad model for that franchise.

I actually haven't seen them getting a lot of good pre-season press. Last year at this time they were predicted by many to win the division and some to even win the World Series. This, of course, was pretty absurd.

Injuries and media hype do have a lot to do with it, but I daresay that this team more than any other does have a psychological problem. Not some curse of a goat, but a mentality of wallowing in loserdom...this has more to do with the fans than the team, of course; the team is a franchise like any other. But I do think at times it really hangs over their heads and spills over onto the field.

Also, cub fans are in love with losing, it's their identity.
