I'll post a long reply in thread later. I think this is the best baseball game I've EVER played.

Yeah I do. No way this game beats MVP 2005, but it's still excellent. Player/prospect progression is terrible in this game, it's like it doesn't exsist.

Yes I do and it beats MVP 2005 hands down. :D

Sorry TC We'll have to disagree on this one.

What do you mean player and prospect progression is terrible? I am only 30 games into my season with the reds, you have to hire coaches that speed up the progression I believe. But please explain what you meant.

I like the career mode. I also like that you can skip to your next appearance or at bat. MVP 06 NCAA Baseball is a lot more fun IMO.

There was player progression issues with last years, MLB 2006 but I've not heard any complaints for 'The Show' and it was supposed to be one of the bugs that was fixed.

I had it, liked it but sold it because I want MLB 2K6 for graphics and WBC play. I may change my mind once I get 2K6 if I don't like it.

Last night I had time to hammer out 4 games. So far I am 19-16 with the Reds. I have had winning streaks of 6 and 4. I am currently on a 3 game winning streak at home, that saw me beat the nationals and then two in a row over the former Wild Card leading Phillies (I knocked them out of that spot and now the Cubbies are in it.) I am two games out of the division lead behind the Stros I believe, and two games out of the wildcard as well.

Pitching
Weathers has 15 saves, in 15 opportunities. Mercker has a 1.19 ERA in abou 18 appearances. Paul Wilson is leading the staff, winning his last 5 starts, with a 5-1 record and ERA of around 3.30.

Other Notables (Roundabout figures):
Harang 2-4, 3.20 ERA
Claussen 4-2, 3.00 ERA (Probably most dependable at this point, has been on 1 hot streak)
Milton 3.65 ERA, 2-4
Bronson Arroyo 2-3, 3.90 ERA

In relief I can say Luke Hudson is my go to guy other than Mercker. He has led the team in appearances with 20+, 2.90 ERA, a boatload of K's. Always makes the clutch pitch. If anyone falters in the rotation I'll probably insert Dave Williams and not Hudson into the rotation initially because of how much I like him in the Set up role. I have also used Wagner, and recently Alan Simpson (recently called up from Louisville over Todd Coffey) in set-up situations. Wagner's been getting the K's and the majority of big outs, and while he'll probably be my closer or be given the shot down the line, his ERA is over 5.00. I called up Simpson because he was red hot at Louisville. Chris Hammond is the situational Lefty and he's been very good in about 5.0 IP.

Offense
Adam Dunn hits 3rd 80% of the time and plays left field. Every once in a while he spells Aurilia at first base. Dunn's been striking out alot but the power numbers are there. He is hitting .230, 12 Homeruns, and 21 RBI. He has stolen 5 bases in 6 chances. He's been getting hot of late, with two first inning homers in the last two games against the phillies (Off Lieber, Brett Myers successively.)

Kearns started the year very very hot. He had about 13 RBI in the first week and has had like 7 since then. He's the everyday right fielder. He's hitting like .305, with 7 HR and 20 RBI. He hit a walkoff homerun in the second game of the season off Ryan Dempster to get the team rolling when he was down to his last strike. It was awesome. He's probably the most solid offensive option but he really tires alot. He is not durable, just like his real life counterpart. He needs a day off a week to stay fresh.

Griffey has been iffy. He is hitting around .220-.230 with 4 HR and 10 RBI. He just had a two homer game that helped me get by the Phillies. He's been getting hot of late because I've started to use his contact swing instead of power. He strikes out second most to dunn, and plays a great center field. *I'll also note that he's been on the trading block all season. I want a quality pitcher in return for him, a starter or guy who could be a future closer. I haven't seen it yet so I'll hang onto him unless I get it. I almost gave him up for Mike Sweeney but didn't.

Rich Aurilia--- This guy has been SOLID. He plays almost every day and even when tired he crushes the ball. He hit around .340-.330 in April. He has cooled off but his average is still almost .310. He has 7 HR and 18 RBI. He is the starting first baseman and when I give EE the day off he plays third, moving Dunn or occasionaly Jacob Cruz to first. I know it's a video game, but to me, he is a man now. He is "RICK" Aurilia. Solid, solid, solid.

Freel- .270, hitting way over .300 in may, 4 stolen bases, 4 caught stealing. Leads off every day and played SS alot in the absence of Lopez but now starts at second.

Womack- UGH. He stinks. Had an 8 game hitting streak in april but is now hitting .220 barely. He leads off when freel gets the day off. I think he has a stolen base or two, but is the king of the weak ground out to second. Has a very weak arm. I don't see him in a reds Uniform after this season in my franchise. Plays Left occasionally and second base when I spell freel.

Lopez- started the season cold, and after about 5-10 games suffered a hand contusion that landed him on the 15 day DL. This forced the callup of Anderson Machado!!! Lopez recently came back, and slowly I eased him into pinch hitting situation, then a start while he was still a bit hurt. Something cool, one game (his last before being completely healthy) I started him and he went 3 for 4 with 2 big RBI against the Diamondbacks. He hits second and plays a good short every day. He's hitting .275 now, 1 HR, 3 RBI, and a stolen base. Love him as the second hitter.

Anderson Machado- recently sent back down to Louisville. Hit over .300 in his callup and really can fly. He split time with Olmedo but overall got the majority of the starts at SS and a few 2B. Might be called up again should another injury happen/Olmedo stop hitting.

Olmedo- Has a couple RBI in a few starts. Plays well defensively filling in at shortstop and third base. hitting around or over .300

Cruz- Started VERY slow, strikes out too much, but as usual is a great pinch hitter and spot starter in Left and Right field. Started the season splitting time with Denorfia as the 4th OF but is now the 4th OF option and probably #1 pinch hitter with all the starters in the lineup. Has 2 big pinch hit Homeruns and 10 RBI, hitting .310, and something neat, hits Lefties way better than righties.

Larue- Great start. I think its breakout season in real life, and the game did not let me down in that aspect. Hits 8th primarily, sometimes 7th, and once or twice 5th when the lineup was thing. Strikes a bit, but is hitting around .290 with 3 HR and 15RBI. Pitchers try to jam him inside but he just keeps mashing that pitch. Tires easily.

Javier Valentin-- Solid backup. Hitting .250 with 2 HR and 8 RBI. Has pinch hit several times and done a fine job of it. Starts abou 30% of the time at catcher for Larue and does well. Strikes out alot.

Denorfia- pleasant suprise. Has about 4 starts and several pinch hits. Hitting over or around .300 with 2 HR (one off Mark Mulder) and 6-8 RBI. Will stay on the roster as the 5th OF if he always does that.

almost forgot Ed Encarnacion.
He's raw, but is tough, plays a great 3B for me. He strikes out as much as anyone, and gets eaten alive by high fastballs, which I chase like a madman. He has connected on a few, and hit 3 HR. He's hitting in the lower .200s with abou 10RBI. When he connects, he really hits it as hard as anyone. He's going to be my 3B and a cornerstone along with Dunn for a long, long time. Usually hits 8th, but against tough righties (Which he's hitting abou .180 against) I have dropped him down to 8th. He has suprisingly impressive speed.

Hope you guys liked the update read on my franchise.

The great thing is this game you can really take advantage, or get taken advantage of, mistake pitches. Last night playing and I've got Rey Olmedo in, game tied 1 all in the 7th. Aurillia is on 1st and I work a 3-2 count foul off like 6 or 8 pitches, and final get that pitch that just seemed to hang and float into the middle of the zone, and Little Rey-Rey, and my power swing just strokes it over the short wall in right!

KearnsyEars
03-31-2006, 12:10 PM
Ya it is cool, because anyone on the roster can hit homeruns, not really similar to the past of MVP's games, which i liked.

I have hit 2 HR with freel so far, and they just barely got out. While Dunn hits moonshots. So realistic. Dunn has been wearing out the high areas in the right field bleachers at GAB on my game.

Jr has been the monster for me so far, second in the league in hr's with 16. I can't hit SQUAT with Kearns. He's hitting .161 for me. EdE and FeLo are in the running for Gold Glove, and my best hitter is.... Tony Womack! :D Ok, I bunt him almost every time he comes to the plate and he's hitting over .400! It's the only thing hes good at in the game! (Could be real life too!)

Claussen is dominating, and has yet to lose for me with a 6 -0 record. Harang is next with Milton and Arroyo having the same number of wins at 3. Milton has more loses with 4. I have a hard time pitching with Arroyo once a runner gets on.

Game is not too walk friendly.

BTW, if you're playing a season and you need an OF, go get John Rodriguez on the cheap. I've simmed like 10 seasons and each one that I started him with, he hits like 350/410/600 with 25+ HR. He's a beast in the game for some odd, odd reason.

I didnt like this game at all and I am holding out hope that 2k6 is much better or its going to be another season of MVP 2005. I hated the way the players moved, I thought the whole thing seemed so sluggish, I didnt like throwing the ball with players, and as TC81190 said the game has virtually no walks.

Drag bunts on HOF are tough, You have to time the bunt just right, and select the correct zone the pitch is in.

IE HOF hitting zones 1 - 9
1 2 3
4 5 6
7 8 9

As to Walks, Set your umpire/strikezone, what ever they call it, to WIDE and be patient. Some pitchers walk you more then others. But play against a control specialist and you better be ready to swing, because they'll get the calls when others won't.

It seems the older I get (30 now) the more I enjoy games that let you be the GM and leave the "playing" to the players/computer. That's why I love OOTP6 and can NOT wait for OOTP 7 to hit the market.

For those that like being the GM/coach more than hitting and pitching, check this game out.

I went and purchased a PS2 just for this game.

I'm not going to go as far as JPUP, and call it the best, but it is enjoyable.

One thing that ticked me off.....

I started a career mode. Hit well in spring training. Got sent to AAA to start the season. No biggie, I'm only 18. So I pound AAA hitting, and get called up on May 22nd or around that date. I go on to hit .331, 18, 57 for the rest of the season (hitting behind Griffey and Dunn).
So I go to start the next season, and I am back in AAA. WTF?

I only pitch and hit. I leave the baseunning, fielding, and throwing to the computer. Although I will say that the computer will always try for the extra base and gets thrown out a lot more than in real life, that's for sure.

Also- could someone tell me how I play with the "all-time greats" like advertised on the box? I owned a similar verison of this game a few years ago and could never find this mode either. Drives me nuts.

I bought the game yesterday. So far Adam Dunn is 1-8 with 7 K's and Kearns is 1-8 with 6 K's. Everyone else is doing great though.

Does anyone know the trick for throwing curves and sliders? They always seem to be erratic and random, going for passballs one moment and down the pipe the next. Please share the secret.

You place the ball cursor where you want the ball to start it's break, not where you want it to end up. Then hit your meter just right. Don't let the meter go to the red, or you are over throwing it. Hit the little line and that's your release point.

Hope that helps.

I love how you pick where the pitch starts instead of where it ends. It was so easy to pick the corners with the older games it was just stupid.

Yeah I already knew about the break. I guess my question is, should I stop the power meter in the yellow or green? I've experimented with it and I either get my breaking pitches to hang lifelessly high or to sink quickly into the dirt. I can't hit the happy medium in between. I was wondering if there was any trick to it besides just trying to find the right release point, but I guess I just need to keep experimenting. Thanks though.

You can change it to classic pitching which eliminates the meter

it's different for every guy. each pitcher has a different release point and the ball breaks different for each guy. you really have to learn your pitchers.

btw, this game is like crack.....i guess. it's very addicting.

I noticed that some pitchers can't throw breaking pitches (most notably curves and sliders) over the inside corner. It will usually hang over the plate or get past the catcher for a wild pitch. But on the outside corner the control and release point is perfect.

MLB 06 The Show is the best baseball game that I have ever played on any console. If you like baseball and you like video games, you owe it to yourself to pick it up. :beerme:

I just went out and got it the other day. So far I am 44-31 in season 1 (simulating, all but 1 game OD). Milton has been spectacular he's among the LL in most important categories except his record is 7-5 but has 2.85 era and WHIP 1.124 w/ 84 K's. Claussen is my long reliever only because he was struggling so I switched him and Hudson. My offense is powered by Jr. ( .304 16 hr. .900 + ops), Dunn (.304 17 hr. .900+ ops) and Felipe (.298 12 hr and .878 ops). While Pena is around .260 and Kearns (PT player) and Edwin are struggling they are not real good on here. Freel is leading off and playing mainly RF, Aurilia is playing 2B and hitting a good 2nd hole.

I only made one trade and that was sending some 25 yr. old AA bum RP to Boston for Craig Hansen, whom I sent up to Triple-A and made a CP out of him (He's just a RP for some dumb reason). I was going to deal Jr. to save money but apparently IN Season you can only trade 1 for 1, out of season (pre-ST) you can do the 3 for 1 or 2 for 1 type deals.

I'll keep ya posted!

I got a demo of this game. It was the Astros vs. White Sox for three innings, and that was all you could play. But, it was enough to convince me that it doesn't hold a candle to any version of MVP, which remains the best baseball game ever made. It's tragic that MVP lost the rights to create a Major League edition this year, but MVP 06 NCAA Baseball is still far superior to "The Show".

Using the analog controls for MVP makes hitting incredibly realistic. You have to have timing just like a real hitter, and you actually have some bat control when you learn how to use it. Also, the analog factors in to the throws, requiring a level of skill just to do the mundane things on the diamond. It's not just a matter of pressing buttons. Finally, MVP is best because it's "speed" more closely approximates real baseball. Though the graphics on "The Show" were probably better, the gameplay is not nearly as fun.

It stinks that the whole licensing thing happened. I would have loved to see MPV 06 as a Major League release.

Has just Chat and Louisville... Just odd because baseball games don't include prospects unless they make a big league debut.. but I'm not going to complain.

The game is more even with player and AI, as both of my games ended 2-1 and I have my team stacked with young prospects like Felix, Hanley Ramirez, Milledge, Jon Lester, Hayden Penn, Peblebon, Shoppach, Billingsley, Broxton, Duke, yadda yadda..

Also the game has a free agent pool that consists of Roger Clemens.. so for all of who want the Rocket.. you got him.

It's got the same graphics as did MLB 2k5.. but updated slightly. You can do the catcher pick off, trades are more fun as you can pick a player and then have other teams send you players who they would trade for that player or those players if you choose to trade more than one. Pitching is easier than the show. gameplay is easier in the show, but 2k6 plays more like a realistic game. I'm still waiting for a roster update besides the online only one. I personally am leaning towards 2k6 over the show.. but slightly.

The stadiums are even better and something suprised me, the fans have actually been differentiated they are just block figures. Sometimes when a foul ball is it they show fans jumping after it then with the guy that gets it he hold it up. Truly unbelievable how far video games have come.

Gameplay wise its kind of difficult compared to MVP 2005. One new feature is you can actually be the man on base. Any thoughts?

I just bought The Show after buying MLB 2006 this time last year. Graphics wise it's pretty similar, but a little spiffed up. However, the freaking light bulb flash graphic on the call-up windows are driving me nuts...

Game play wise I'm still having trouble mastering the base runner controls. So often already I've advanced both runners accidentally, had the guy on 2nd advance to third while the guy on 3rd held up, etc. I've also found that if you take even the smallest lead off 1st before the pitcher comes set, it's all over. I guess I just need more practice with it.

That said, the pitching/hitting interface is the best I've seen. I love the inability to place breaking pitches manually. I only have 2 complaints.
1.) There seems to be a bit too much "streak" behavior -- likely based on pitcher confidence. There will be a stretch in every other game or so where 5 or 6 consecutive batters hit the first pitch in the zone to a place that's indefensible -- rocket up the middle, gap double, etc. I could put the pefect pitch in a cold zone and it just doesn't matter. They are going to get a few runs off you right then and there.
2.) Sliders on the outside corner. It doesn't seem to matter how hard I throw it or how accurate my release point is, about 1/3 of sliders on the outside corner go flying away to the backstab. It happens regardless of the pitcher or catcher.

You place the marker where you want the pitch to break, not where you want it to cross the plate. You have to know your pitchers in this game, it's pretty sick.

If CPU roster management was even halfway decent, this game would be unbelievable.

I've actually had MLB 2006 for about a year and it works the same way, so I am familiar with the system. I think it's more of a function of the fact that because the slider has mostly horizontal break, that if you miss the release point by very much it breaks horizontally way too early/late and hence the trajectory of the break carries the ball out of "catchable" range. With most pitches you just miss high or low, or with a curve just a little left/right, but the slider has such pronounced break horizontally, that a screwed up release point is dangerous.

I am still playing on Veteran. I suck. I hardly ever guess pitch. Every once in a while I will, but usually on FB counts. I never GP on a pitcher that throws both fastballs, because it's really hard to guess which one. You can still get a hit if you guess the wrong pitch, but your timing has to be absolutely perfect.

I hardly ever guess location, only with certain players. Griffey I always push UP with the right analog, then hold IN (left) with the left analog and wait for something on the inner half of the plate.

If there is someone on base, they usually pitch Griffey away, so I hold OUT (right) with the left analog and just sit on something that looks decent on the outside part of the plate. :)

Well guys I bought the game today and all I can say is WOW!!! its a awesome game even thow I stink at it. Im playing veteran and I can't hit a thing!! Should I start out as a rookie or just junp in and keep playing as a vet?? What pitching mode do you guys use? classic? Im giving up homers by bunchs even to Sean Casey:laugh:.

When you bat do you just push the square button and the homers will come or do you have to push up to hit fly balls?? Thats got me kind of confused b/c I don't know if I only have to push the square button to hit homers or do I also have to puch up on the antilog stick.

Personally I always use the X contact swing unless I guess correct and lock onto a pitch, then I will use the square power button. However if the hitter is a scrub Eckstein type, I will still use X. Also the left analog stick does control where you aim your swing.

I think you should stay in veteran mode and just practice. It took me 3-4 games before I was hitting consistently.

One last thing, does anyone else have problems making contact with Dunn? He K's at an outrageous rate, like at least twice per game.

A) If you guess wrong the batters timing will be thrown off, and you'll have less of a chance to get a hit.
B) You don't have to guess everytime.
C) I usually only try to guess on fastball counts, allowing the batter to "sit dead red."

I'm pretty sure Hatteberg doesn't exist in the game. When I was started my frachise I just picked up a really crappy 1B and edited his abilities to make him like Hatteberg. Eventually I figure I'd be too frustrated by the incosistencies between real rosters and mine, so I went create a player instead. I'll tell you, Willie Bergolla (pronounced Burr-Gohl-uh by the announcers.... ugh) is a AA beast...

If you guys don't have online access, PM me and maybe we could work out something, Send me a memory card and I'll get you a roster download. With the latest roster Hatteberg, and Ross are both there as well as McCraken, Cody Ross wasn't in it as a Red, but Monday's Roster may have him there.

What team does Hattaberg play for?? I hav'nt looked for Phillips and the two Ross's that we traded for.

Hatteberg isn't on the game.
BP - Tribe
C. Ross - LA
D. Ross - Padres

Got a quick question, in franchise mode you can simulate any of the games instead of playing them all?

I don't think you can argue it. I've had a few people get tossed out, but it was on their own doing.

Is there anyway to make the guys run faster (such as a turbo button) for lack of a better word.

WVPacman
04-28-2006, 01:03 AM
I hav'nt been able to run any faster than I do but I just got the game yesterday so I don't know that much about it.

Do you guys play with the guess pitch on or off?? I have been playing with it on in vet mode and I can't never guess the pitch.

6-4-3
04-28-2006, 01:17 AM
Just think like a real game, I only guess in fastball counts, or 1st pitch fastballs. This is why the game is so good, it's very indepth and realistic.

WVPacman
04-28-2006, 01:25 AM
It says in vet mode when you guess a pitch all four corners light up red (I've seen that)but when you guess both the pitch and location crossheirs then show were the pitch is coming.

My question is what do I do to guess the location?? Do I push down on the left antilog stick when I am guessing the pitch??

Question for the onliners here. Does anyone know how often they update the rosters? And if so, what day?

The Baumer, thanks alot for telling me how to guess the location on the game.I played it lastnight and finally played a good game scoring four runs with homers from Dunn,JR,Encarnacion againist the Indians.I lost in ten innings by a homer from Todd Hepher(can't spell his name) but losing by only one run like that it makes me happy.

Sorry fro bringing this up again, but does anyone know how to actually get the online roster updates to apply to a franchise mode already in progress? I am in the middle of a season and just obtained the live roster updates for the week. The problem is I still have Womack, no Cody Ross, no Lizard, and Milton is still in the rotation. I saved and loaded the rosters when I got them but they didn't seem to apply for some reason.

Thanks in advance!

yes, i have actually thought about changing his pitching motion. I can't hardly pitch with him at all. It takes everything that I have to actually make it through 5 innings with him. He's horrible, I actually raised his stats a little. I think the windup is the problem.

RedsFan75
06-27-2006, 09:22 AM
You may be onto something the windup is very slow, and then when he's in the stretch it's amazingly fast.

I've tried meter and classic style but have a hard time pitching with him.

I'm thinking of trading him, but I hate too as he's doing so well with the Reds I want to keep him! Maybe I can edit his control a bit and use Classic style will help.

Do you still feel this game is leaps and bounds better than MVP 2005 on the PC?

I'm not Jpup, but I feel it's leaps and bounds above anything that EA Sports ever put out.

The plus for MVP 2005 on the PC was the mod's and upgrades that the USERS did. If you compare console to console there is no doubt that this is the best game out there.

Just my opinion though

I don't know about that. The Show is excellent, but MVP 2005 was the greatest sports game, let alone baseball, I've ever layed. Gameplay was incredible, there were minors you could manage in Franchise, and prospects were all there with great player progression.

saboforthird
06-27-2006, 05:39 PM
I don't think The Show is all that much to write home about. It's a very dry game, and video game consoles shouldn't be like that. I believe it's still perfectly acceptable (and achievable) to have a game that is realistic AND fun. Doesn't seem to be the cool thing to do anymore. I honestly feel marketing teams don't view that as a good model for repeat customers. I've always felt that if the "perfect game" (or at least one without having to tweak sliders, and that portrays the game accurately on the field, and is fun to play) existed, repeat business would go way down. Just like concept cars could be all over the roads today, but they aren't. It's not profitable in the long run to make waves today.
