In his Under the Knife bit at Baseball Prospectus Will Carroll states that Dave Williams will start the season in extended spring training.

I thought I was up on reds rumours and I had missed that. Morning papers are quite about it as well.

It would be in keeping with the general attitude the new administration seems to have that you must actually earn your playing time.

Anybody confirm this?

I think they're leaving him in Florida to get instruction and to get his work in before the Reds need a 5th starter for the 1st time.

They're not sending him down for good. He doesn't have to "earn" anything, he's got the 5th spot for now.
