View Full Version : Isn't Cincy the traditional "first" game of the year?

Am I just having selective memory, or when did this change?

What am I missing here?

we had been for quite a while. i seem to recall it changing about 10 years ago, when ESPN started showing more games (in fact, might have been their Sunday Night game which changed the tradition).

Sadly, it changed years ago - how long? I don't know...

Would it be the same time that the REDS/the city did away with the Opening Day parade etc. I was reading how traditionally it was the REDS who started Opening Day an the city would have a parade which ended at the grounds.

SandyD

They still have a parade. I refuse to watch the Sunday night game before Reds opening day generally, but I may have to deviate this year, since the White Sox are in it, and Alfred is a White Sox fan.

We'll flip back and forth between the LSU women's hoops and the White Sox.

As far as I know, Cincy used to open a day before everybody else (except one other team, obvs). then they reserved the right to the first pitch. Now the only right they reserve is always to open at home, which no other team has. I know that at least for the last two years, the reigning World champs opened a day before, because the Red Sox played the Yankees in New York last year on Sunday night. I don't know how long this has been the case.

I've been waiting all day for the White Sox game and it's not on network TV. Boooooo.

Yeah, all we get now is a home opener. Was Cincy the first to do the Sunday opener for ESPN?

We covered this partly last year too.

The Reds had it by default for the NL teams for years, when the league offices were merged so went the tradition of the Reds opening at home first in the NL (at least)

Actually, Opening Day has not been the traditional opener for some time now. It was until about 20 years ago, give or take a few years. I remember Detroit wouild kinda sneak in there every once in a while. I think the first ESPN Sunday night game was the Reds. Marge did not care for that game being on a Sunday night, it was also Easter Sunday, because it took away the Opening Day festivities, which actually happened the next day. So there was no bunting or pomp for that game. Ever since then the Reds have not been the traditional opener. They have been the traditional NL opener more often than not but the actual traditional MLB opener is a thing of the past.

Is network TV the main four (CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX)?

It is, but the majority of ppl have basic cable as a minimum...not all, but most, and ESPN is on all basic cable packages.

Then the Reds will just have to win the World Series.

Does anyone think RCast could get the Reds back to being the first team to play on opening day? Let MLB have the W.S. champion begin the season on Sunday night, but have the Reds throw the first pitch on Monday's opener. The Power of Tradition and all that.

It's only an AL game..not real baseball :)Alright "Krono", first you say you'd prefer to see Rich starting at second (okay, so that was starting over Womack ;) ) NOW, you are giving the AL the business again.

Marty, it's time you let the real Krono out of his closet and allow him to return to posting....

Yeah it is, and without cable I only get reception on about two of these on a good day.

I'm getting a play-by-play on the phone. it's not nearly as exciting.

Hmmmm, I can think of three solutions:

1 - Gameday will be up and running now that the season has started. Thought you can't actually watch the game, you will know what's going on with every pitch.

2 - Maybe you can catch it at a sports bar?

3 - Subscribe to MLB.com for $14.95 and you can watch all (or most) of the Reds games on your computer.

Ah I forgot about those little guys! That is a great idea; I am on my way. (There's always radio too, of course, but I was so bummed about not being able to see it on TV that I held it against the radio for some reason.)

why can't the reds move opening day to sunday afternoon? most people wouldn't have to blow off a day of work and we could have the first game again. also parking wouldn't be as bad downtown with the game being on sunday and not being a work day. i think its a win win situation for all.
