Top 6, 2 on, 0 out -- Harang: laboring (labouring, for our friends across the pond)

Ronny Cedeno drops a bunt down that is fielded by Encarnacion (a 2-strike bunt no less) and beats the throw out.

Bases loaded. Reds in trouble again.

Joy.

OMG....fellas, they're giving you an out....you gotta make that. I blame both Harang for a bad pitch 0-2 and EdE for being to slow on that one.

EdE had dropped back a couple of steps because of the 0-2 count. Npt really his fault and he did make it close at 1st.

Top 6, Sacks Full, Harang in desperate need of a strikeout.

Angel Pagan up to bat, first career for him. He'll thank all of the gods he believes in afterwards, I'm sure. He runs the count to 2-2 before getting an absolute gift from the umpire on a pitch that should've rung him up (it's where it crosses, not where it ends, WGN idiots). It's a flyabll out to Dunn who MUFFS ANOTHER ONE!

A run scores, count it a hit.

6-5 cubs, back on top.

Caveat Emperor
04-03-2006, 04:08 PM
Get prepared for EXTREME LOW VELOCITY ACTION as Chris Hammond makes his Reds re-debut.

Juan Pierre, the baggette-eating surrenderer up in a bases loaded situation. I wouldn't be surprised to see him drop a bunt. Well, there's 2 strikes, so I would now. He makes an awkward and awful looking swing to hit the ball back to Hammond. Hammond can't field it cleanly, and it's another infield hit.

Cubs score again, 7-5 now.

After that stellar outing, I, for one, am extremely glad we went to the trouble of signing Chris Hammond. Your new vict- I mean, pitcher, is Mike Burns.

Yes Mike, it does.

On the plus side, at least with nobody on 3rd, another judy infield hit doesn't score a run.

Derrek Lee is up first. The umpire, deciding that the wind chill is really doing a number on his skin, decides to start calling the outside strike. Visions of 3 run bombs dance in my head, as the count runs to 3-2. Fouls occur. LEE hits a towering fly ball that turns Adam Dunn around. He then falls down. Words fail me.

Wind effects any ball that gets above the stadium, highly unusual in Cincy, combine that with a poor OF and you have trouble. You could tell Dunn wasn't anticpating the wind moving the ball(a good OF would have).

Reds could have addressed the OF defense by putting Denorfia in CF and Jr in LF and Dunn at 1st. Dunn could actually turn into a good 1B, he would never be anything but below average in the OF.

I'll have to give Dunn the benefit of the doubt. He is not a good outfielder and would be better off at 1b, but with the way the wind is gusting, I'd say it's obviously the problem more than his skills. The scarier part isn't that WMP is better, but I'm guessing WMP might have killed himself trying to field those suckers with his skills.

Wind or not, and Hatteberg's HR today notwithstanding, just about anyone oughta think the defense would be helped immensely by playing Denorfia or Freel everyday in CF, Griffey in LF and Dunn at 1B. I know I'm not even CLOSE to being the only one on here that feels that way.

And despite the 4,918 middle infielders from AAA up to the 25-man roster, still NONE of them are above-average caliber. Cesar Izturis is very available, assuming he's healthy... if so, why not get him and plug him at SS and Lopez at 2B, keep Richie on the bench, Freel primarily in the OF and Womack off the team. That'd help quite a bit... a couple guys below-average defensively where they're at (Dunn, Griffey) and one at best average (Lopez) would slide over to probably above average at their new position (Griffey and Lopez) and respectable (Dunn).

Sea Ray
04-03-2006, 04:25 PM
Dunn at first.
Griffey in left.
Denorfia in center.
Bergolla at second.

Presto, a defense that isn't 100% embarassing and only a minor drop-off in offense (if at all). Why is this difficult?

What makes you so confident Dunn can catch balls any better at 1st base? Those that watch him all day say he's a better left fielder than a first baseman. The Reds have a problem as to where to put this hack. His offense is wonderful but his defense resembles Wily Mo and Kal Daniels.Maybe this will cause him to work on his defense. I'm not so sure he's taken defense very seriously up to this point. Maybe this will be his wake up call.

I'll have to give Dunn the benefit of the doubt. He is not a good outfielder and would be better off at 1b, but with the way the wind is gustingthe wind exposes the fact that he is a poor OF. He got caught completely off-guard twice by the way the wind moved the ball when it got above the stands. A tough day to play OF but good OFs make those plays. You can't practice those plays you have to be able to anticpate and track the ball.

Maybe this will convince Adam he should be playing 1b.

Bottom of the 6th, Nefi Prez is your new 2nd baseman, Scott Williamson is your new pitcher. Hey, I remember him...

Chris Denorfia comes in to pinch hit. I wonder if he can get him to pinch field for Dunn -- that'd be awesome. WGN announcers say you can't summarize this game in one sentence. I can: "Second verse, same as the first." Denorfia swings at junk to run the count to 3-2, then drives the ball all the way to the wall for a double.

Way to go kid -- make it hard for them to send you down again.

Today is about the wind in LF. A good OF would anticipate the wind moving the ball 20 feet, Dunn was completely fooled by it.

BTW, tracking flyballs has nothing to do with playing 1b.
