Are we boxing?
No, but the Nats were when Pedro hit 3 of their batters in 5 innings.

I guess Jimbo team is more 'scappy' than the Bucs were when Brandon Claussen hit 3 of thier batters.

umps overruled call - 1 run scores, Felo stays at 3rd, would've prob scored otherwise had wrong call not been made.

ball clearly hit ground before bouncing up into outfielder's glove on fly ball.

edabbs44
04-06-2006, 10:52 PM
Dunn hit a looper to left center and the CF trapped it. Dunn was called out. The Reds argued and got the play overturned and the umps let one run score.

Can someone give us a synopsis of what happened?ball bounced in the CFs glove. Clearly hit the ground but the ump called it a catch. Umpires get together and reverse the call, Tracy is run and a run scores and runners at 1st and 3rd

04-06-2006, 10:52 PM
Dunn it a sinking ball to center Duffy dove for it. Ball CLEARLY bounced into his glove and it was called and out at first. Oh yeah Denorifa was on second and Lopez on first. Got overturned after Narron argued. Score Denorfia, RBI Dunn.

Ok I said it and it happened. On opening day I told many of you naysayers Aurilia would be splitting time with Encarnacion by game 5 it took 3. In game two Encarnacion didnt do much better which is why you see Aurilia who in the first two games has put up the best numbers offensively for the reds. Don't get me wrong I dont think Encarnacion is a hack, but he still needs time to develope and his bat isnt helping us win right now. I clearly rember about 15 of you bashing me saying this would never happen and also you gave my rep numbers low points. I guess you guys just don't like someone that knows baseball. To all you naysayers for future posts, "don't act like you know everything you don't!" If you did you'd be a part of the Reds staff. So next time someone comes in with a bold opinion as mine maybe you should shut your mouth and listen for once.

My 2 Cents..

Security is reporting that it made it out to Mehring Way. A driver stopped and picked it up.

I left work tonight, got my car out of US Bank garage, drove home along Mehring Way while listening to the game and thought to myself, "That'd be great if Dunn pulled one out of here and I picked it up on the road." Ten minutes later I got home saw Dunn jack his homer, and later heard George tell us that it hit a car and he picked it up. Weird. That should've been me.

I agree that the position is overrated. I think it's the rules on the stat that make it that way.

I really think that a save should only be recorded if one swing of the bat can tie/win the game.

Coming in and going 1-2-3 with only a one run lead is not exactly cake.

CINCINNATI -- The call was originally wrong, but credit the umpires for ultimately getting it right.
With runners on first and second and two outs, the Reds' Adam Dunn hit a soft liner to center field that appeared to be trapped on a short hop by Pittsburgh's Chris Duffy. Third-base umpire Bruce Dreckman ruled it a catch and the third out.

But as the Pirates left the field, Reds manager Jerry Narron argued the call. An umpire conference resulted in a reversal. Dunn was credited with an RBI single, and pinch-hitter Chris Denorfia was allowed to score from second base. It was the difference maker in a 6-5 Cincinnati victory in Thursday night's series opener before 13,887 fans at rainy Great American Ball Park.

Pirates skipper Jim Tracy was ejected after arguing the call reversal. However, television replays clearly showed that Duffy had indeed trapped the ball.

With two outs in the top of the eighth, Pirates catcher Ryan Doumit had tied the game with a two-run homer to right field off reliever Rick White (1-0).

Pinch-hitter Edwin Encarnacion broke a 3-3 tie with two outs in the fifth by rolling an RBI single up the middle. Dunn's booming 479-foot home run to right-center field in the sixth made it a two-run game.

Brandon Claussen started and gave Cincinnati five innings, allowing three runs on five hits with no walks and five strikeouts. Claussen gave up a game-tying three-run homer to Joe Randa in the fourth inning.

Pittsburgh's Ian Snell worked five innings and allowed four runs on 10 hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

Mike Gonzalez (0-1) took the loss for giving up Dunn's single. David Weathers pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his second save.

I've got a dumb question and maybe this has been covered elsewhere but can anyone tell me what the shiny black stuff is around the elbows of the Reds shirts that they're wearing under the vests? It looks like pine tar or something but I know that's not it. It's on the skin tight shirts not the loose 3/4 t-shirts like Claussen had on tonight. I haven't noticed this shiny black on other teams undershirts.

Just wondering...

I paid a quick visit to the umpires' dressing room after the game and spoke with crew chief Gary Darling about the Dunn play. The consensus was Bruce Dreckman, who made the call, had the toughest angle -- almost straight-on -- but two other umps, Darling and Larry Poncino, saw it right from the start.

Actually I understand that they are called Skins. They're used quite a lot here in Australia as what they do is provide support to certain muscles so that they are not as likely to get injured. There are also recovery skins which have different compression areas that assist in muscle recovery.

They are really effective. One of our cricketers suffered a double tear to his calf muscle and once he started wearing the Skins no such problems anymore. I've worn them once or twice and they take a bit of getting use to. Its like you've got strapping in all these strange places.

On the game I've got to say its time to get rid of Kullman's mistake. He hasn't been effective in ST and looks to be a liability in the game. DFA him and bring up Wags!

Just watched the game (God Bless TiVo for us 2nd and 3rd shift workers  hi GAC)...my takes:

-Claussen looked sharp tonight. 1 bad pitch. The 3 HBP I kinda like...shows he has no fear of pitching inside. Very solid first outing.

-Good for EdE. Gotta boost the kid's confidence and *gulp* kudos to Narron for putting him in a position to succeed (though he should have been starting, but I digress....)

-Glad to see the umps get together and make the right call. Good trend here.

-Wow, awesome game for FeLo. Keep it up!!!

-Weathers looked great. He's not flashy, he's efficient. 16 for 20 the last 2 years in save opp's. I'll take 80%.

-The BP is going to give me indigestion all season, me thinks. Oh well. Hopefully Kriv & Co. remedy this...soon.

-Classy move by the 13 fans that showed up tonight to give Casey a standing-O and I liked that he tipped his hat to the crowd :cheer:

I hope Milton, circa NOT 2005, shows up tomorrow. Boo no TV...coincedence that Milton is pitching and no TV? Hmmmm....

Regardless, welcome to a winning record, fellas. Now keep it up!

Reds are on pace to win 108 games!
Adam Dunn is on pace to hit 108 HRs this season, but at the pace everyone is on he probably would not be the Reds MVP. Arroyo is on pace to win 54 games AND hit 54 HRs, so if he keeps that up he would probably be the MVP. Unfortunately Arroyo probably won't keep that pace up.;)

We have the technology. We have the capability to make the world's first bionic centerfielder. Ken Griffey, Jr. will be that man. Better than he was before. Better... stronger... faster. Can we fix that oozing hole on the back of his hammy? :barf:

My take:

Dunn hammering the first pitch 479. 1 P/PA, 1 monster home run.

With 2 strikes, Dunn singling to left-center to drive in the winning run. If he'd tried to pull that pitch, he makes an out.

The guy's still growing as a hitter, and he's going to get better.

Well, we did decide to go on down to town and give it a try and luckily the weather cooperated. Here's my take from the game.

I was very impressed with Brandon Claussen working his way out of a very sticky 2nd and 3rd no out jam retiring Pittsburgh's 3,4 and 5 hitters. He showed alot of grit in that situation right there. Very encouraging.

I caught a Jack Wilson foul ball in that first inning! Sweet!

Sean Casey's standing ovation was neat. Too bad there weren't anymore people than the 13,000 that were there though.

The defense overall was pretty good.

The bullpen was very good tonight. Mike Burns did a great job in the 6th. Rick White was pumping strikes (albeit slow strikes) all night. Despite the 2 run homer, he had a good outing. David Weathers looked good in his 1-2-3 closing opportunity. Overall I was very impressed with the pitching all night.

On the Dunn play the umpires did the absolute right thing and got together and corrected the call. You like to see that happen, even if it goes against your team. The right call is the right call no matter who it benefits, tonight it just so happened that it benefited our team.

The weather was crappy, but we "weathered the storm" so to speak. When it started raining right before first pitch we just moved up underneath the second deck and were fine the rest of the night. It's not like we had to battle people to find two empty seats.

On a side note, I know half of the fun people have around here is debating the lineups, but really folks, if the Reds win the game was does it matter who plays? All I want to see is a Reds win, I don't care who helps get it.

Dunn's flyball was slicing pretty hard. It's a very similar spin to a curveball. When a curveball hits the ground it tends to kick back the opposite direction of it was travelling. I think this is what contributed to the ump making the initial out call. On tv and replay you can clearly see it hit grass, but in live action, with that spin induced hop straight into the CFers glove it probably looked like a catch, depending on the umps angle of view.

Rick White was pumping strikes (albeit slow strikes) all night. Despite the 2 run homer, he had a good outing.I'm sure that others noted it live, but as soon as I saw him returning for inning #2, I knew it was trouble. A guy like White, you take that one easy inning and run with it. Narron apparently didn't like the payoff he got with one good inning in the 7th and pushed it. Guess what? It took seven rolls, but Craps eventually came up.

In the world of facing former Reds Casey came out about par with what other former Reds stars did when they first faced their former employers.
