View Full Version : Anybody Seen Enough of LHP Chris Hammond?

Yeah I know it is the first week but what I have seen of Chris Hammond hasn't impressed me one bit. He is pitching like a 40 year old and has shown he can't get major league hitters out.

Another fine acquisition by former GM Dan O'Brien ( I can't believe this guy is that dumb to be a GM.) Would the Reds be better off eating Hammond's contract and recalling LHP Brian Shackelford?

Yes, we would. I watched the game today and Hammond looked just horrible. He has shown that he is not capable of being an MLB pitcher anymore.

So far, i've only seen the line on the guy (have either been at work, or asleep).
But what i have seen so far of Hammond has been rather painful.
From what i have been able to gather so far is, he has been given a couple of chances in a row to close out the game - and both times has failed miserably.

Chris is a class act, who probably doesn't need the money at all. He can't be too thrilled about his 189 era, and maybe (just maybe) he might retire on his own.

Yes and don't worry it will happen soon. Krivs isn't a moron.

said that before the season started. I included Burns/White in there as well

I'm willing to keep around: Burns, Weathers, Mercker, Belisle, and Coffey. But Hammond and White have to go, yesterday.

I agree 100% with your post. I don't mind keeping Burns here, he actually appears to be almost decent. However Hammond and White have to go, and Shack and Wagner need to come up. The most fusterating thing is that it seems so blatantly ovbious. Hammond and White are L/R and Shack and Wagner are L/R.
:bang:

Come on Krivs pull the trigger.

If I'm Krivsky, I tell Narron to do the following:

1. Make Coffey the closer---it is time to find out if he can do it.

2. Make Weathers and Mercker the setup men for Coffey.

3. Give Hammond his unconditional release and recall LHP Brian Shackelford.

4. Give White his unconditional release and recall Ryan Wagner.

5. Tell Castanelli that Hammond and White weren't Krivsky's acquistions. Eating the contracts would be painful but Shackelford and Wagner are making peanuts so the hit to the budget would be minimal to the Reds by releasing those two.

6. Trade Tony Womack to the Marlins for a young, living, breathing pitching prospect.

I don't see why everyone is so quick to give up on Hammand. He has has four solid years in a row. I don't believe a couple bad outings is enough to worry about. Rick White on the other hand should have never been signed.

9 HRs in 58 IP combined with a bad 2nd half while pitching in the best pitchers park(PETCO) in baseball was a sign that Hammond was on the verge of a collapse.

He got an out today. He's making progress. Perhaps by the All-Star Break he'll retire every batter he faces.

We do have some options:
1. Shackelford and Wagner for sure.
2. When/if Paul Wilson comes back, Dave Williams could go to the pen.
3. Why are most down on Standridge? He seemed solid for 1/3 of the last season wasn't he?
4. Is it possible one of the starters at AAA could convert to bulpen guys and be reasonable since they aren't long for major league starting? Does Lizard, Germano, etc..have anything that could help us over White, Burns, Hammond, etc..?

The Marlins wouldn't trade a bag of baseballs for Womack, much less a pitching prospect.

I give him a chance on the road to see if he has anything left. Could just be jitters pitching in the Great American Home Run Park.....If he tanks on the road next week. Then cut him...............

Hammond and White have no business being in the major leagues anymore. They both seem to be good guys, and it's not personal, but they have nothing left in the tank. I am also not a big fan of the "closer by committee" theory, and think it would be benificial to give these guys a definitive role of some sorts. Imo the "closer by committee" deal has never worked and probably won't work here. I'm hoping that Narron wakes up and puts Coffey as the closer with Weathers as the set up man............and does it fairly quickly.

Yep, I'd like to see Coffey given a shot as the closer.

Give him some time. Remember David Weathers last season? He came out of the gate slow and everyone was calling for his head about this time a year ago and he rebounded to become our best option right now out of the bullpen.

Hammond has a proven track record, he's just off to a slow start. Give him some time.

It's not about Weathers, Hammond, or White. It's about everybody. Together, White, Hammond, Mercker, Weathers, Coffey, Burns, and Belisle have a 10.55 ERA through 5 games. On the other hand, the starting rotation consisting of Harang, Arroyo, Claussen, and Milton, they have an ERA of 5.82 (and that includes some added earned runs by the bullpen). That is almost twice as bad as the starters, and they're playing only 44% of the playing time that the starters are getting. So for every four innings the starters put in, they give up basically two runs. When the bullpen goes in for two innings, they give up slightly more than 2 runs. Something must be altered or we are not going to continue this winning streak. I don't know about you, but I'm feeling the same way about this bullpen that I thought about Danny Graves last year...I hold my breath and hope we come out victorious. Bring back Vern Ruhle and Ryan Wagner!

After another lousy performance by Hammond and White today against the Cubs, I think the Reds should given them their release and eat the contracts.

GOREDSGO32

They suck, but I think they should be kept on to sort it out, at least right now. Only be used when your up 9 or more. Unless there's a trade, there's not much moves we can make. Don't make hasty moves, they suck, but they do have experience so you never know if they could be just having a bad start.

Hammond and White should be given a little more time, they are veterans, perhaps they snap back, but I am not holding my breath. Narron will just have to ride the others until these two shape up or ship out.

redsfan30 has it right. i was thinking the exact same thing about weathers last year. for whatever reason it takes these older guys a little longer than spring training to be ready. maybe hammond should just not be in so much when he's sucking. give him some days off

Hammond < Shackelford

SMcGavin

Hammond's last four seasons he posted ERAs of 0.95, 2.86, 2.68, 3.84. To me this is very similar to the Weathers situation last year. I'm willing to give the guy a little time to get it together.

About Shackelford, does anyone know his splits from last year? Just looked him up and that 2.43 ERA from last season looks awfully nice right now. Can he pitch effectively to righties, or is he solely a lefty specialist?

I was watching yesterday's game on the Cubs channel when one of the announcers said that coming into the game Hammond's ERA was one-eighty-nine, and I'm thinking, wow, nice, until it dawned on me he meant 189.0.

And he got through the inning throwing 10 strikes out of 14 innings. I think we need to keep in mind it was a 9-1 game at that point. Someone else mentioned that he's throwing strikes, which should always be a plus. Of course, they count pitches that are hit as strikes.

I think some of Hammond's yesterday were a bit of bad luck. I recall one which was right on the line. I think Hammond will come around.

I'm thinking patience might be in order for now.

You had me until I got to this.

Why not ask them to pick up Womack's contract while we're at it, and, heck, let's see if they'll toss in Dontrelle.
