This will be Williams' first start against Pirates, who dealt him to Cincinnati in December for first baseman Sean Casey. The left-hander was the Pirates' only double-digit winning pitcher last season, where several career bests -- including a 138 2/3 innings pitched -- were established. In two career games at Great American Ball Park, Williams is 1-1 with a 4.09 ERA.

Santos will look to rebound from a shaky debut with the Pirates in his second start. Tuesday, Santos continually fell behind Brewers hitters and was knocked out of the game after allowing three runs on eight hits and two walks in just 4 1/3 innings. Santos is 2-1 with a 7.03 ERA in eight career appearances against the Reds.

Matt that is exactly what this is all about. I knew Womack would play today beacause Narron is trying to so hard to keep everyone happy. When we face a lefty expect Freel, a righty Womack. A trade will go down very soon, I'm just afraid it will be Womack getting a lot more starts when that trade does indeed go down.

You know what's funny? Complaining about Narron's choices for the lineup when the guys he's thrown out there so far are hitting a combined .333/.429/.607 after five games. Whatever he's doing, it's working better than everyone else in the league.

Sure Ryan Freel should be playing more often. But this team has great depth right now. When Womack has played, he's produced. Ditto Aurilia. Ditto Hatteberg. If they don't produce, they won't play. That's what's great about having options.

Maybe, just maybe, Jerry Narron has an idea about what he's doing out there. Since he's taken over this club last season, I think he's done a very good job of playing the match-ups.

Narron's made some lame roster decisions, and is brutally slow with the hook, but in general, I don't have much of a problem with his lineups.

I do have a serious problem with his deployment of the bullpen--particularly his unwillingness to bring in Belisle as the first arm out the pen, mid-inning, and allowing soft-tossers like Burns and Weathers to start innings only. And this goes back to last year as well.

I agree with the bullpen deployment as a weakness of Narron's. And I like the Belisle idea -- a lot.

But I generally think Narron's greatest strength since he has taken over is lineup construction and playing match-ups. I was pleasantly surprised last season, but I thought that might just have been relative to the Miley lineup fiasco.

I'm no longer surprised. To me, Narron has proven that he has better than average acumen when it comes to making the best choices for the lineup on an everyday basis.

It seems pretty clear right not that Womack/Freel and Hatteberg/Aurilia are traditional platoons.

Now, I don't like the fact that Womack's going to get the lion's share of the PT at 2B, but until he tears off a truly Womacknificent month. The I think we have to expect him in the lineup and leading off against RHPs.

If It's not broke don't fix it. I have no problem with the platooning as long as it works.

Platooning (along with the double-switch) also gets bench players more involved in the game. And as long as they are being productive (which they currently are), I think that's a good thing.

On a semi-related note, how much complaining about lineups and who was or was not starting would the typical RedsZoner have done if RedsZone had been around in 1990?! It seems to me that Lou Piniella played a lot of people, either with spot starts or coming in as part of a double-switch. I have a feeling that there would have been a lot of hate for Herm Winningham, Ron Oester, and Luis Quiñones.

I couldn't agree with you more...Freel needs to be our everyday 2B..No ifs, ands, or buts about it. The guy makes things happen..Womack might be doing well, but he does not have the versatility that Freel has. Even those in my fantasy league at work(I'm the only Reds fan in the league) is even wondering why the hell isn't Freel starting. Womack is the past, Freel is the present and the future. I've been unable to log onto All Access since late Friday night. I keep getting a screen which says I need to purchase a subsription. Sent MLB an e-mail and stayed on hold yesterday for 40 minutes trying to ascertain what the problem is.

The subscription renews automatically and I've never had a problem before. I don't know what the deal is this year. I'm sorry that your having problems but I'm glad to know it isn't just me.
