I decided to keep some running data on all the MLB teams. I'm hoping to update this every week. Right now, the projected records probably won't be accurate due to the small number of games played. A few weeks from now the picture will become much clearer.

As ugly as the Reds pitching may be this season, it's not frequently going to be 16-7 ugly, as it was on Opening Day. That one game really skews their RS/RA ratio.

As ugly as the Reds pitching may be this season, it's not frequently going to be 16-7 ugly, as it was on Opening Day. That one game really skews their RS/RA ratio.

In general, you don't have a bad run differential unless you take a fair number of ugly beatings like that.

It's the hallmark of teams that get outscored by gobs runs over the course of the season that they suffer a large number of lopsided losses. That's certainly been the case with the Reds over the past three years. If you take away the crooked number defeats, you might have something close to a .500 club, but it's when you lose a large number of laughers, games where you're not even in the contest, that you begin to spiral well below .500.

As for this season, in each of the past three seasons we've heard early season assurances that ugly losses won't become a regular event only to have them crop up on regular basis. At this point I'd say it's incumbent on the Reds to prove this model is different, otherwise I think you have to assume double-digit beatings will be happening with a certain amount of frequency (22 times last season, 25 times in 2004).

The ugly game syndrom is softened by the massive amount of runs the Reds scored, but one things for sure the Reds are unstable, their run diffrential is in the negative and they have a winning record.

Scoring over 40 runs in the first 6 games is a rarity, as is giving up 47... doing both in a season is even rarer, so I liked that part myself. (http://baseballminutia.com/blog/2006/04/11/things-that-make-you-go-hmmm/)

I was playing around with keeping track of run differential, so you can see here the last two years for the Reds in April... as mentioned above notice how the blowout losses move the Reds into positive numbers.

Pretty exciting to see that the Cubs will win 119 games and the Tigers will win 128. Just goes to show you that sometimes a small sample will really give you junk results.

This may be obvious to most, but...

If you think about it, most close games are going to break down somewhere close to 50/50... somewhat a matter of luck... its the ability to dish out the whooping and remove the game from the other teams reach... and to avoid them yourself, that makes for an overall winning team. And the Reds might have done some of this last week if their bullpen wasn't falling apart. :(

Yep, it goes back to a simple precept -- those who don't make things harder than they have to be tend to succeed.

With a 9-0 lead in the 7th, hoping the Reds can finish off a good Pythag day...

I was more impressed with Colorado. Wow- 98 wins in THAT ball park.

They'd be the first team in major league history to have 100 wins and a pitching staff last in the league.

Rox Rock!

No Mark Prior
No Kerry Wood
Derrek Lee on the DL for up to 3 months

I'd say the northsiders should be put on suicide watch, but this is really par for the course with that franchise.

Updated 23 April 2006. The Milwaukee series was a pythag rollercoaster and the Reds actually came out ahead this series by a few runs. Kansas City, in the futility watch, helped their cause this past weekend and they are now projected to win 45 this year.

Things to look at with pythag records are the +/- column. This is an indicator on how well a team can win the close games. Teams with positive numbers (more actual wins than pythag wins) tend to revert and teams playing under their pythag will usually improve in close games down the road. So basically, don't expect the Reds (+2) to keep the kind of success they are currently having and expect the Yankees (-3) to turn it on sometime this season.

More bad news, the Reds only project to a 4th place finish in the NL central right now. Although 86 wins this year would exceed expectations for all except the most optimistic fans.

Here's the latest damage report:

Wow, Detroit has reason to be excited this year. 12-7 and right in line with their pythag. Now's the time to hop on the Tigers bandwagon.

It's way to early for this, I know, but the postseason projects to be:

AL: New York, Chicago, Texas  and Detroit (WC)
NL: New York, Houston, L.A. and St. Louis (WC)

Now, before you all get twitterpatted by this, remember that most teams haven't even played 20 games and the standard deviation is still really high. This means things can change quickly as seen by today's game with Milwaukee. The Reds jumped 10 projected wins overnight with their 11-0 win. That win was so signifigant to the pythag of the Reds, that if they win their next game 11-0, their projected record shoots to 92-70! Also, don't expect this many teams to win 100 games. As the season continues, you'll see the worst pythag teams improve their projected record and the best pythag teams decline. So don't print those World Series tickets yet, Detroit.

So the Reds sweep the Nats and finish the roadtrip 6-1. But how did they do in terms of their pythag? Here's the updated damage report. The good news is, the Reds are projected to win 90 games. The bad news is, three other central teams are projected to do it too.

Just curious as I am relatively new to this angle of study, which exponent are you using in the calculation, the standard ^2 or the modified ^1.83.

I set up a spreadsheet to track the reds as I start learning more of the statistical analysis of the game. Thanks for threads like this, it has brought my appreciation and enjoyability o fthe game to another level.

I'm using 1.87. It has been shown that 1.87 is the most accurate exponent. However, any exponent between 1.8-1.9 will produce very similar results. At that point, we are just splitting hairs.

Here's the breakdown:

Exponent Error
2.00 4.126
1.90 4.044
1.89 4.041
1.88 4.040
1.87 4.039
1.86 4.040
1.85 4.041
1.84 4.044
1.83 4.048
1.82 4.052
I've been trying to update at the end of every series, but I'm in the middle of midterms right now and things are a little crazy. I hope to update the records after tomorrow's game.

well, if Pythag holds out - its Wild Card time in Cincy.

Can't we just call time and use the "Get into Playoffs Automatically" card. I'm sure there's a few roaming around.

I truly thought the NL Central was going to be a terrible division this year, that the Cards were going to come out on top with something like 85 wins and that the Wild Card was going to come from the East. It's early yet, but I guess I may have been very, very wrong.

5-8 against (Indians, CWS, Angels and A's)

13-1 against (Minn, KC, Texas and Seattle)

I'll wait until I anoint them anything better than a.500 team.

Allowing only 85 runs so far in the AL is, well, great. The only team that's owned them so far has been the White Sox, who are an amazing team.

They may not be anything more than a .500 team, but I'll be stunned if they don't end up somewhere near or slightly above .500.

True, but the teams they have played all aside from CHW and CLEV are 10-14 in AL OPS

Magglio Ordonez was a sleeper pick for me in my fantasy league. Drafted him in the 21st round. Got Curtis Granderson in the 24th.

As long as they keep playing well and the Pistons keep doing their thing, I could care less what happens to the rest of the city of Detroit.

Now, if I could just get the rest of my team (coughChaseUtleycoughJakePeavy)
to start performing up to norms -- and for Huston Street to start performing at all, then I'd be in business.

Im first in my yahoo league with the likes of:

C - R. Hernandez
1st - A. Dunn
2nd - B. Phillips (great FA pickup by me!)
3rd - E. Encarnacion
SS - M. Tejada
OF - M. Ordonez
OF - A. Kearns
OF - C. Tracy
Util - C. Utley

Also have Ensberg, Alou, Estrada (Atl) and Sexson.

Been nice if Lackey would have kept his mouth shut yesterday... *sigh*

Never been first before because Im the DanO of fantasy leagues.

I had first place for one glorious week in a 10 team league with all my friends from college -- but now it's back to middling as my lineup can't stay consistent:

C: Josh Willingham
1B: Adam Dunn
2B: Chase Utley
3B: Miguel Cabrera
SS: Felipe Lopez
LF: Pat Burrell
CF: Curts Granderson
RF: Magglio Ordonez
UT: Prince Fielder
BN: Robinson Cano, Scott Rolen (Aubrey Huff - DL)

SPs: Dontrelle Willis, Jake Peavy, Josh Beckett, John Lackey, Chris Capuano
RPs: Huston Street, Chris Reitsma, Chris Ray, Mike Timlin

I thought I'd have a chance to dominate with that lineup, but they've been maddeningly inconsistent -- especially the rotation.

And, just to keep this thread on topic until the next Pythag update -- man, it's crazy to think how much better the Reds would be if they could just avoid getting blown out once a week.

The Reds are hanging on to the all-important Pythag wildcard spot in the NL. And that team that just took 2 out of 3 from the Reds this weekend? They are projected to win 97 games this year. All is not bad in the desert it seems. Also, this could be the second year in a row that Cleveland wins 90 games and misses the playoffs.

Let it be known that I was on the Detroit bandwagon in April this year. They are still projected to win 99 games.

As it stands now, the playoff picture is thus:

AL: NY, Detroit, Texas and Chisox
NL: NY, St. Louis, Arizona and LA

Not worried that they are doing so poorly vs some of the better teams?

I suspect it's the same story for almost every team except for the Mets and Cardinals (although after those first two game in Chicago, the Cards RS/RA took a big hit).

Well kinda sorta, most good teams establish a positive differential and carryu that all season. I think the Reds are harder to pin down because of the extremes in the BP and the offense, either can shift the balance in a series.

However the Reds have played lucky over the past couple of seasons, they've lulled us to sleep before and thrown water on us in the morning. I for one now sleep with one eye open.
