DAVID ROSS is leads off the final frame. WGN announcers finally show a glimmer of insight as they look at the Reds walk rate as being a success indicator. I guess even a broken clock is right twice a day. Ross drills a ball down the left field line as Ross trots down to 2nd base.

Bob Howry -- just call him Buddy LaRosa because he's dealing the meatballs big time today.

ANDY ABAD up first. I wonder if he ever thought about adding a "C" somewhere in his last name so that he could have all of the first 4 letters of the alphabet involved. Aliteration aside (ha!) he pops out to Cedeno at short on the outfield grass.

1 out, man on 2nd.

RYAN FREEL up, looking like he's back in Spring Training form. He gets waaaayyyy under the ball and pops up to Nefi Perez on the infield to complete his o-fer day.

A SCRAPPY o-fer day, that is.

2 outs. Ross still lonely on 2nd.

Caveat Emperor
04-13-2006, 05:52 PM
FELIPE LOPEZ up with yet another chance to drive a run in. Howry seems to fear the man with the neck tattoos (seriously, you gotta be tough to sit through that) and goes down in the count 3-0. Lopez takes 2 called strikes on the outside corner to run the count full. Plate discipline is fun in the first few innings, in the 9th, everyone just groans.

Lopez takes a walk, 1st and 2nd with 2 outs.

Howry: About to enter a world of pain.

ADAM DUNN flies routinely out to Angel Pagan in Right Field. He got under the pitch badly. I'm sure he'll regret that one tomorrow -- and he'd better, because the Wackbags (my fantasy team) don't accept failure, even when leading by 5.

Reds still up more than a few. 8-3. Let's finish this thing off.

Caveat Emperor
04-13-2006, 05:57 PM
Kent Mercker in for the obviously non-save situation. Incidentally, this really proves my point that the Reds need to limit bullpen exposure to 3 guys: Weathers, Mercker and Coffey. They'll win a lot more ballgames if they can get 7 IPs out of their starters.

NEFI PEREZ is your leadoff man as the Cubs attempt the all important 5 run rally. Nefi, apparently not getting the memo, chases a bad ball in the dirt for the strikeout. At least everyone'll get home sooner with these kinds of swings.

1 out.

If the Reds can get 7 IP consistently out of the starters, then they won't have to carry as many relief pitchers, and instead have six (or even seven) hitters on the bench.

JERRY HARRISTON up with 2 on, 2 out, and my laptop battery reading :49 minutes remaining. The last thing you want here is a walk with Derrek Lee on deck, so naturally Mercker throws 3 consecutive balls. Mercker throws a strike to avoid the LH4PS and then gets a foul ball to run the count full. Runners, naturally, will be running.

3-2 pitch, and Harriston strikes out on Ball 4 to end the ballgame. Mercker makes it interesting for himself, but gets the K.

And it's another Reds victory today.

The bullpen has pitched 5 1/3 scorless innings over 2 days.

Just saying.

Does this sound pretty scrappy of them? Or manly?

It's hard to know.

Also, if Milton sucks but no one actually saw him suck does he still suck?

And is 2-0 with a 2.63 ERA over 2 games (averaging close to 7 innings per start) enough for anyone to think he can be a 4.50 ERA innings eater again?

Aronchis
04-13-2006, 06:15 PM
I don't grade starters to about the 5-10 starts under their belt. Milton is starting better than last year, but he completely tanked in May last year while Claussen struggled in April and begin to find a groove in May.

Quick starts are nice, but not necessarily a big deal.

Encouraging - but still too early. If what people are reporting is true (that he is getting much more drive from that knee) then maybe, maybe, maybe. But its still too early.

I think Milton does look better this year.

Last year he was having such a hard time planting on his lead foot then his shoulder would fly open and the ball was almost always above the belt. He doesn't seem to have as much problem with that this year.

It's early though. We'll see.

The Reds have made Zambrano into a girlie man twice in a week. Now, go see if the Cubs ready to trade him in a weak moment after watching him implode with a balk and an error on a pickoff move with the opposing pitcher on third.
