What an important inning that was. And, maybe, game. To have Harang stare down Carpenter like this is huge for this team. Huge. An ace against an ace. Nice work Coffey. Wouldn't mind some insurance runs here. At. all.

04-14-2006, 10:39 PM
Our middle of the lineup can get things moving...ad a run here and leave Coffey in!

RedlegJake

A wee bit of glovework wouldn't hurt either but I agree...if Coffey can step up and the Reds can ditch White for a renewed Wagner it could get real exciting

Update on our old friend Dessens 3 days ago...strangled Yanks in 7-8th on 19 pitches, Bell yanks him for Royals "closer" per "book" - Yanks comeback and win.....where the heck do they get that book that insists on slots when you have the Reds or Royals bullpen...why not the hot guy all the way?

Yeah I guess it only seems like forever....lol. I'll say this much, our starting pitching is MUCH better this year than it has been since 99 imo. We have a legitimate MLB starting staff now. I'm not saying we have a true # 1 starter or even a good staff for that matter, but this is the 1st time that imo I think that all of our SPs are legitimate MLB starters. If we could ever get the Bullpen straightened out we could honestly contend this year.

Again, even with the walk, Weathers is impressive in the 9th, just peppering the zone and keeping their hitters on their heels. I know occasionally his mediocre stuff will get him in trouble, but as far as going after hitters fearlessly in the 9th rather than acting like a scared little girl out there is refreshing.

VERY happy so far.

I was one who was more optimistic than most, due in no small part to the ST performances of a few guys, Womack most definitely being one.

7-3 and in first is awesome, and this win was fantastic. However, let's take a step back and realize just how early it is. If I recall correctly, we've been pretty darned competitive in the beginning of almost every season for the past few years - even beyond the first couple of weeks!

Bottom line - I'm not making flight arrangements to Cincy for the Divisional Playoffs just yet.

Just got home and finished reading the game thread. (I watched the game, and listened to Marty and Steve, but wasn't near a computer.) Great game by the Redlegs! Harang pitched really well, and also contributed unexpectedly with the bat. Coffey may have grown up tonight! His strikeout of the "Jim Brown of Baseball" to end the 8th inning was awesome! I was really excited! And Weathers calmly took care of business in the ninth. Hopefully the pitching staff continues to improve. I'm not to concerned about the lack of offense--the Reds faced a good pitcher. But they still found a way to win a game that they would have coughed up last year. Can't wait for tomorrow!

Resounding cheers could be heard by a few nearby neighbors on that one. Coffey had a great changeup working today.

That wasn't a changeup. It was a splitter. And it took balls as big as churchbells to throw it to Edmonds in that siutation. Kudos to Coffey for having confidence in it because it's a pitch he didn't have last season. BTW, Coffey ripped it up to 96 MPH on one pitch tonight. That's the kind of velocity we heard he had and the ball had movement at 96 MPH. Good stuff.

Three problems...

1) The Lopez steal in the sixth Inning. Stolen bases are all well and good, but don't position a straight steal with Dunn at a plate on a 1-1 count when the opposing pitcher is Chris Carpenter because the count is likely to go 1-2 and, at that point, you've just about taken the bat out of Dunn's hands. I credit Dunn with a Sac Bunt for that because trading an Out for a Base is pretty much what you're doing with that decision.

2) Tony Womack's bunt in the 7th Inning was plain stupid. Don't care if he was bunting for a base hit. The runner was already in 2B, the pitcher slot was up, and the pitcher (Harang) was tabbed to start the 8th for the Reds. If Womack can't figure out that swinging away in that situation was the best option, then he shouldn't be playing.

3) Austin Kearns getting caught at 3B when he represented an insurance Run was just plain not smart. He was actually safe, but when the throw beats a runner like that, it's immaterial. You want to advance on a ball hit to SS, you do it on a ball hit to the SS left rather than his right. All Kearns did was enable Eckstein to make the only possible Out play he had. Bad idea.

jhiller21
04-15-2006, 02:20 AM
It may have been a splitter, but I've seen Coffey throw anywhere from 88-96 mph on his fastball, and up to 93 mph on his splitter. His change is anywhere from 80-84 mph.

The ONLY explanation I have for that was maybe he thought it was going to go through and was trying to score on it. That may be a stretch though. No way Ecstein and his puss arm was going to throw Javy out a 1st, AK should have just stayed where he was.

Didn't understand that either, just another example of why Freel (he was in the lineup anyways I know) and BP should play ahead of him.

The Reds threw their best pitchers out against the Cards and they squeaked out a victory. I suspect even with the slumping Cards, the lack of Reds pitching depth may take the rest of the series in their favor.

He had his splitter working well in his last outing as well. By dialing the fastball up to 94-96, it makes the split all the more devestating -- the hitter knows he has little reaction time, sees a pitch that looks identical to a fastball coming at him and comes up empty on the swing as the ball falls off the table. When Coffey was throwing 88-90 last year, that splitter just wouldn't have worked as well.

Incidentally -- I'd been following the game on my phone all night. I came back to listen to Marty's call of Coffey's strikeout, and it was one of the better ones he's had in recent memory. I rag on the guy a lot -- but he still has the ability to just send chills when he's on top of his game.

It was definitely the splitter as the action bored down and a bit away. Coffey hit 96 on his fastball tonight but was generally around the 89-92 range with that pitch. The Edmonds K pitch was an 87 MPH splitter with perfect action.

I love mlb.tv.

Yes, but they have more depth. The Reds simply do not have the depth the Cards do on the mound. As the season progresses, move along, this becomes more evident. Why early season trends fall apart and the better team wins by July.

Interesting little tidbit.....

The last time Cincinnati won a 1-0 game, it was Harang over Carpenter on Aug. 26, 2004. The run that night came in more conventional fashion, on a Sean Casey homer.

Cincinnati's last 1-0 win on the road came on Sept. 14, 2003. Harang became the first pitcher to drive in the only run and earn the decision in a 1-0 game since Chicago's Carlos Zambrano on Sept. 22, 2004.
