Of all the female country singers who is your favorite?

biggestREDSfan

My favorite is definitely Terri Clark! :luvu:

This is a bit tougher than the males. I like Shania, but she's more or less pop now. Sherrie Austin was enjoyable to listen to, is she still around?

I like Sara Evans and Chely Wright. Deanna Carter also.

Neko Case, when she is doing country, is my favorite without a doubt. I also second Kathleen Edwards. Anyone heard Caitlin Cary? She used to play in Whiskeytown and now has an album out with Thad Cockrell. It is really nice.

I wasn't even aware that Kathleen Edwards was country. I have her music, and I like it a lot, but that goes to show that you can't count on me to place music in it's correct genre, I love it all.

More "Alt Country" but I don't think of Shania Twain or any Big and Rich production as country either.

I don't listen to country music at all - nary a peep. Except if I am surfing the channels and see a video by either of these ladies.

Martina McBride, then Kasey Chambers, Emmylou Harris, Nanci Griffith although I guess the latter 3 don't really get classified as typical country.

For pure vocal chops, Martina McBride. I like Terri Clark's and Gretchen Wilson's songs better, though. Miranda, too. I tend to prefer the jeans-wearing chicks with a bit of an edge to the homecoming queens, musically speaking.

Wow, awesome picks. I seriously was contemplating between Loretta and Tammy myself for all time, and I really like Kathleen Edwards and Allison Moorer among more contemporary sounds (or "alt-country" as some call those acts). Though they caught a lot of flak (unjustly, but no need to get into that), the Dixie Chicks have good REAL country music... some of their breakthrough music was poppish, but their last couple albums have been absolutely real country.

Yeah, call it what you like. I am not too big on labels, but she fits in more with country than other commonly used groupings, I guess. "Australian folk" possibly? It was a good chance to bring up here name anyway, as I didn't know anyone else listened to her, and now I know you do

So which do you like better, "the Captain" or "Barricades and Brickwalls" or her newest one (which admittedly I have to listen to more frequently to form a good opinion on it).

Faith Hill and Shania Twain.

Heres the thing, I don't know if I could really ever classify those two as country. They both appear on pop stations as much as they do country.

I've never really liked cross-overs. Either you are country or pop(or insert other genre here).

That is all.:)

She's from Somerset, KY, for anyone here from that neck of the woods. I think my brother Jose might have even canoodled with Rebecca's cousin Amy a few years back. The Valentins have a strong base in southern KY and northern TN.

Honestly, that is probably why I like them. As I said in the male thread, I am not a huge country fan. I'm not a music snob by any means either. I will listen to just about anything once or twice and then make up my mind. If anyone ever saw my CD collection they would understand. Could honestly be a little embarrassing:eek: from time to time.

Yeah, that's it. I think that is her 1st after the birth of her daughter IIRC.

Regarding whether the artisits are truly classic country, new country, alt-country, etc I really don't care. I pretty much just go by if I like their music. I actually dig some of Shania's stuff but don't necessarily like Faith Hill's much at all. And I agree that Patsy Cline was flat out awesome - we have a box set of her's that is fantastic. But to me they are 2 completely different types of music to compare, kinda like how I like Queensryche and the Grateful Dead and the Indigo Girls too but they really aren't very similar. But I like 'em all for their own merits.

I was actually thinking of naming Julie Roberts myself. I am more into the ones you mentioned also, but Julie is one of the few who's come out in recent years in the "mainstream" that I like. I don't think she's TOO pop... in fact, I think she has one of the few bluesy-type country voices out there. Oh, and I'd vote her as most attractive one out now as well, with all apologies to Sara Evans, Faith Hill and others who received votes on here.

In my oh-so-humble opinion, Patsy Cline is the greatest country vocalist (male or female) of all time.
As for current female artists, Martina McBride is number one. She has an absolutely amazing voice. I've heard her sing in person without any accompaniment at all, just Martina and a microphone (and I doubt she even needed the mike), and she still blew everyone away. Martina is also terrific looking, and by all accounts a devoted wife and mother of three girls.
I also like Sara Evans among contemprary country artists. I saw her in a concert a few weeks ago, and she was great.
I saw Shania Twain in concert several years ago. She isn't the vocalist Martina and Sara are, and Patsy was, but she can sing, she put on a great show, and she is easy on the eyes.
Trisha Yearwood has a great voice.
Tammy Wynette was great, with a tear in every vocal.

Alison Krauss, I can't believe no one has mentioned her, and Leeann Womack, no relation to Tony.

For old country, Patsy Cline, Dottie West and GAC"s favorite Tammy Wynette.

That's right, I tend to get locked into what is served up by those mass media sources as well. And for the most part I find a lot of stuff I like just by doing that. But every so often I check myself, go out there a ways, beyond what I hear on those same 2 channels everyday, and am always glad I did. Heck, I cannot find a radio station around that plays many of my favorite artists, or at least a reasonable selection of them.

Is Sherrie Austin still performing? I remember enjoying her voice. I dunno if it was because she was Australian or what, but her voice had a very distinctive sound to it that you didn't hear much in country.
