Doc. Scott
04-19-2006, 03:37 PM
Top of 9. Coffey on to face 7-8-9. Aurilia at second, Lopez moves to short.

Reed bunts, but it's deftly fielded by Rich and he flips on to first. One out.

Abercrombie is jammed into a foul. Swing and a miss. Ball one, juuuuust misses. SWING AND A MISS HE STRUCK HIM OUT!

Helms to pinch-hit for Herges. This guy's got power, now. Ball one. Swing and a miss! Ninety-five mile-per-hour fastball for strike two! SWING AND A MISSHESTRUCKHIMOUT

Grrr. It's a tie game and the bottom of the ninth approacheth. Borowski and Wellemeyer in the Florida bullpen. Which will it be, the grizzled vet or the flamethrowing youngster?

Did I mention we get Dunn, Kearns, and Hatteberg?

Doc. Scott
04-19-2006, 03:39 PM
And it's the fireballing Wellemeyer, known far and wide for his blazing number one and poor control.

Dunn (0-3, BB, RBI). Taken low, ball one. Swing and a miss. Misses inside, ball two. In the dirt, ball three. High and away, ball four! There's the winning run right there.

Kearns (0-4, 2 K). After a bad day at the dish, Austin has the chance to be a hero. Ball one. Very high fly to right, and Abercrombie makes the catch.

Hatteberg (2-3, BB). Fastball, strike. In the dirt, count evens. Again in the dirt, 2-1. Popped foul, out of play. RIPPED INTO RIGHT, BASE HIT! Adam has to stop at second.

Encarnacion SWINGS AND DRIVES IN THE WINNING RUN! BASE HIT! REDS WIN!

9-8. Whew. Win- Coffey. Loss- Wellemeyer.

Our 1b issues are soooooo minor when you're having to regularly score 7-9 runs to win a ballgame, and actually doing it. I would rather our management spend a small fraction of their time right now on 1b and spend all their efforts on putting together some deals for arms.

When a player starts to walk alot, the hits aren't far behind.

Watch when Dunn slumps. He'll usually break out of it soon after he starts to watch the ball better and gathers a few walks.

Hatteberg was walking tons even when he was hitting .200. No big surprise that after a few hits he's close to .300.
A .948 OPS is usually considered pretty good for firstbaseman around here.

I like young, waterbugs with EBH power, and if they are cheap all the better. Improvement is the goal, and it will take awhile for that to even be exaimined.

No doubt.

One other quick point on Hatteberg...those walks means he's seeing plenty of pitches. That's part of a line-up that is forcing pitchers to throw a lot of pitches. That's no small thing. It forces teams into their bullpens earlier, and I don't know that there is one team in MLB that is thrilled to get into their pen in the 6th inning or so at this point. Getting Willis out of the game today fairly early on was huge. Hatteberg's eye is a part of that.

He's been absolutely fine as part of the platoon to replace Casey. More than fine, in fact.

Good thing Dunn didn't run too hard--might waste energy.

I just saw this ridiculous post after watching the video of Dunn scoring. Adam ran hard the whole way, which he didn't need to considering the ball was laying in the left field corner and the LFer didn't even make an attempt to go after it. People like you amuse me. You just attack Dunn any chance you get, even when you don't know the facts or have any clue of what you are talking about.

Video of Dunn scoring:
http://cincinnati.reds.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/index.jsp?c_id=cin

Now tell me he didn't run hard. And then explain why he should have to run 110% and risk an injury on a play where he could have did six backflips, moonwalked half the way, crawled a 1/3rd of the way, stopped and ordered a bud light from a vendor, slow danced with Mark Berry at 3B, and stop and do ten pushups and still make it to home plate safely?
