The host just said the Reds are trying to go 5 games above .500 for the first time in five years. That definitely is not true. Tino Martinez is very bad also, he sounds like he is on an infomercial.

Sounds like he was mocking how bad we are, kind of like the Sportscenter anchor said Milton gave up '900' homeruns last year.

I kind of like Orel, but Tino is just awful. He's like a monotone car-salesman

Realy, if he has to go under the knife again, I'd say he's finished. But the Jays will likely be off the hook for mostof it with insurance.
I normally don't care about spelling, but guys it's Orel, not Oral. I feel funny reading the word "oral"as a name.

Ill have to place the blame on George unless he was using Oral as sarcasm, and then that should earn some rep points.

And they obviously don't know anything about mullets either. Bronson's hair is all one length; he just tucks it behind his ears.
Wouldn't it be nice to get some serious reporting out of ESPN, instead of all the cutesy crap? Something they've apparently forgotten how to do.

I actually work at the Worldwide leader, and the reason the other analysts are on tonight is because it's a semi-weekend show. Almost every Saturday night BBTN is the same way, with Tim Kirkjian and Jeff Brantley or Orestes Destrade. You rarely see HR or Krukker on these shows; they come back for the Sunday afternoon and evening BBTN, hosted sometimes by the frighteningly sweaty Chris Berman but usually with Karl Ravech.

Has anyone here ever heard the funny story about what Tomy Lasorda said when he heard his team was getting an oral hershiser? I have heard Marty and Joe allude to it several times, but they can't say it on the radio, and I have never heard the complete story.

The Reds were 11 over .500 at 32-21 after relief victories in back-to-back games by Brian Reith and saves by Danny Graves.
I did this rudimentary reasearch in less than two minutes. The people at ESPiN should have been able to do the same.

Where the hell did they dig up Orestes Destrade, and why for the earth of him can't he sit up straight and not lean on the damn desk?
I miss Dibble on BBTN. Good to see that they replaced him with another former Reds closer. With the route he's going, does this mean Danny Graves will soon be out of the league and joining you in Bristol?

I love Orestes Destrade. He's got a wealth of baseball knowledge, including Japaneese baseball, where he played a few years. If you listen to him on XM, you'll see how smart and funny he can be.

Lemme clarify, I'm an OD fan, I just think he has poor posture! Although after having seen exactly how small those desks really are, I don't blame him for leaning.
Dibble is more of a sentimental pick for me, it was good to see him still connected with the game in some avenue, but once he left ESPN, I stopped watching him, and I felt him leaving ESPN voided most of his credibility.

Brantley is horrible. I remember last year when he said the Reds offense sucked, despite them leading the NL in runs scored. His reason? Because they struckout too much and didn't play enough smallball.
Jeff Brantley is the worst TV sports pesonality I've ever seen in my life. He's that bad! When he starts talking I start looking forward to when it's Kruk's turn.

Ouch. Because when Kruk is droning on, I find myself wondering if Van Gogh's cutting off his own ear resulted in deafness, because that seems like a decent option as opposed to hearing Kruk talk further...

Basically Dibble used to be the weekend guy on BBTN, often with Brantley. (You want to see guys fired up, tell those two Jeff Shaw and Dave Burba were the best Reds relievers ever, hehe.) I think Dibs' contract ran out a few years back, and he chose not to renegotiate with ESPN and went to Fox Sports. I had heard rumblings that people up high didn't like some of Dibs' comments while he was on with DP on his radio show. I will say this though, of all the famous athletes I've seen come through ESPN, being a 10 year old in 1990, the first time I met Rob at work was the most starstruck I've been in my years in Bristol.
All the baseball analysts are great guys, so it's a little more difficult to be objective in who trumps who, but I've always thought HR and Steve Phillips handle it the best on the analyst side. Of course everyone's favorite around here was probably Bobby V, but I guess when the Japanese leagues come callin, you say sayonara to BBTN.

Don't you have work to do?
In your opinion, who's the best BBTN has to offer, and who's the worst they trot out there on a regular basis (If Tino Martinez doesn't win this by a landslide, then I dunno..)?
I honestly think the best are HR and Phillips (although clearly he's up there in terms of DanO as worst GMs ever), and if I had to pick a 3rd, I'd go with Gammons, although in that trio there's no clear cut host, and I know your employer loves to have hosts.
Gammons is good.
Honestly, the rest of that crowd gives me a headache more often than not.
Especially Karl Ravech... when did that guy get all opinionated? You're a talking head, stay that way.

Yeah yeah yeah, Sunday Night Baseball doesn't hit first pitch till 8; I've got time to kill.
Best: HR, who's been doing it a while, so he just can roll with just about anything that's thrown at him TV-wise. Phillips is really well spoken and knows his stuff, although his evaluation of talent may be suspect (Mo Vaughn anyone?) Kirkjian's voice may crack like he's a Brady kid, but he also is remarkably knowledgeable. Gammons is good, no doubt, but if he could find a way to not tie EVERYTHING to the Red Sox, he'd be far and away the best of the former writers.
Worst: Tino is pretty stiff, it's true, but this is his first season doing it, so I'll give him a pass until the ASB. Olney is difficult to watch; he always seems like he has too much in his mind and he can't get it all out fast enough. So he stumbles like crazy.
As to some other people's posts, maybe I'm Kruk-biased, but I've thought he has pretty good analysis. It's more of a straight-shooter type approach, but I think it works with the sarcasm of Ravvy and the childlike enthusiasm of HR. I've yet to work with Hershiser, so the jury's still out there.

Analysts aside, who's the best host? Ravvy? He seems to have the best chemistry with HR and then whoever you can put with those 2. I thought Brian Kenny did a hell of a job when I saw him on BBTN.

BK is the man! His "onerunllscore....TWOrunllscore!" call on bases clearing hits is easily one of my favorite calls. (If you've never heard it, the way I spelled it doesn't really do it justice.) Ravvy may not be everyone's favorite, but you really have to see it from the control room side to understand how good he is at his job. He handles any changes throughout the show seamlessly. Rece Davis is equally as good, but he's basically great at any sport he does, so that one's not so surprising.
I'd probably put it BK, Rece, Ravvy in that order, but it'd be too close to call.
Scott Reiss and Bill Pidto on the other hand....well...

His good work notwithstanding, BK is another one of those guys you just love to work with. He'll take the time to talk to you for a minute or two, learn your name and things about you, and so on. I'm sure he thinks nothing of doing it, but it's refreshing to see people not caught up in their own celebrity.

I don't like many people on ESPN. I love Joe Morgan though. He's clearly bull headed and wrong about many things, but he does at times provide a unique viewpoint on the game. I also love that he is one of the best Reds of all time lol. Gotta support.
