Mariners demote Borchard, recall Nageotte

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

SEATTLE -- The Seattle Mariners designated outfielder Joe Borchard for assignment and recalled pitcher Clint Nageotte from Triple-A Tacoma before Sunday's game with the Detroit Tigers.

Seattle has 10 days to trade, release or assign Borchard to the minor leagues. The 27-year-old former Chicago White Sox first-round draft pick appeared in only six of the Mariners' first 19 games, with two starts in center field. He was 2-for-9.

Seattle had traded left-hander Matt Thornton, its 1998 first-round choice, to Chicago for Borchard on March 20. But Jeremy Reed has since recovered from a sprained wrist and re-established himself as the Mariners' regular center fielder. Plus, reserve outfielder Matt Lawton has returned from a 10-day suspension for testing positive for steroids.

Nageotte, 25, made his major-league debut with Seattle in 2004. He also pitched in three Mariners games last season and has a career record of 1-6 with a 7.30 ERA in 15 games, five starts. He was 2-1 with a 3.86 ERA in three starts with Tacoma this season.

There were those, just as recently as a few years ago, that thought he was as good or a better prospect than Dunn.

Um, why would we want the Reds to claim a 27 year old career .192 hitter?

I started this thread before saw about the Cody Ross possability. I was just saying before if couldn't get Zach day then Borchard. I would prefer Ross over Borchard. I just wanted something other than Womack. :)
