Elizardo Ramirez' first start last year when filling in b/c of an injury to Brandon Claussen (sprained ankle)...
* May 15, 2005.
> At Philadelphia. REDS lose 4-3.
> Quality Start... 6IP, 7H, 2ER, 4K, 2BB, 2HRA.
> REDS manage only 8 hits (but had 7 walks). V. Padilla wins the game.

His next 3 starts...
> 13.1 IP, 23 H, 18 ER, 4 K, 5 BB.
> 12.15 ERA, 2.10 WHIP. :help:

I say give the Lizard another start!!

May 16, 2001 - Cincinnati v. Arizona. A young righthander by the name of Brian Reith takes a no-hitter into the 6th inning in his big league debut.

Like I said on the Brandon Phillips thread -- the tapestry of baseball is littered with names and stats of people who looked can't miss for a game, a week or a month.

Wow...I quite disagree with that assessment. I think Bob Uecker is fantastic at calling the game. Quite apart from his entertainment persona he put on in movies and TV shows, he does a great job at calling the action and bringing the game to life on the air.

Here's the thing about Ramirez (and most young pitchers basically). They have good enough stuff to pitch games like this they can get big league hitters out with their repertoire. The problem is consistent command, time after time. Location, changing speeds, and location. Lizard may not be ace material, true, but he could very well become a good 4-5 starter in the majors. The Reds need for a true ace fronting the staff has the board judging every young pitcher by "ace" standards. 2 years I heard the same junk about Harang - he didn't have good enough stuff to be a solid ML starter. I think it's more in the kid's own head whether he makes it or not. Not his arm.

One batter too late, but Ramirez is out. So now they go to Shack against Vidro (switch hitter) and Johnson (lefty). Then Coffey will come in or Weathers if the ninth inning.

Still, don't think Lizard should have come out there for the 8th. Enough.

Not worried about the confidence, he can't be the loser in any event. But agree that Narron mishandled this. He should have just had Coffey pitch the 8th, Weathers the 9th. He kept Lizard in for the righty hitter, then brought in Shack for the switchers and lefties.
