This year's start by Arroyo reminds me of Bill Bonham in 1978, who started the season 7-0 in his first nine starts for the Reds after being acquired from the Cubs in the offseason without much fanfare. He finished the 1978 season 11-5.

The very next season, Mike LaCoss started 8-0 for the Reds before losing three straight decisions. He finished 1979 with a 14-8 record.

Tuna-Boat Jack! I remember that start. He thought it gave him the right to make reporters call his agent to "schedule" interviews b/c he was big-time. And as we see a lot, he faded out as quickly as he came into the scene. He ended up 12-9 in 1990 (his only winning season in the bigs) and I am sure his agent's phone wasn't ringing too much after the All-Star break in 1990.

You are right on the wins. Armstrong was 11-3 at the 1990 All-Star break. His last game and win before the July 10 All-Star game was July 5 at Philadelphia (REDS won 9-2). His post break record was 1-6. He ended the year w/ a 3.42 ERA. His ERA totals by year in his 5-year ML career were 5.79, 4.64, 3.42, 5.48 & 4.64. Definitely a 1-year (or perhaps 1/2-year) wonder!

It's a bit of a reality check, an example of what can happen to pitcher throughout the course of the season.

Oh, Bronson will indeed turn out to be a dependable starter, but to EXPECT him to keep putting up the numbers that we're seeing thus far could lead us down the path to disappointment.

Brooks Lawrence was a starter for the power-laden 1956 Reds and he went 13-0 before losing a decision.

The loss came on July 21 as Roberto Clemente hit a three-run homer in the top of the ninth inning at Crosley to overcome a 3-1 lead and beat the Reds 4-3.

And now, to borrow a phrase ;) , 'This begs the question'...what Reds starting pitcher, if any, has had a better beginning of a season than 13 wins in a row?

Good mention, gm! Alcala started 5-0 and Zachry started 4-0 for the 1976 Reds. Furthermore, they did it with little or no run support from an everyday lineup of no-names.
