Bronson Arroyo is 4-0, this begs the question, when was the last time, if ever, a Reds starter began the season 4-0?

When was the last time that the Reds pitching staff recorded two shutouts in a week?

Edit to answer:

August 20, 2004 2-0 @ Arizona
August 26, 2004 1-0 vs. St. Louis

Didn't Danny Graves have a season when he started 5-0 or 6-0?

Certainly not as a starter.

This year's start by Arroyo reminds me of Bill Bonham in 1978, who started the season 7-0 in his first nine starts for the Reds after being acquired from the Cubs in the offseason without much fanfare. He finished the 1978 season 11-5.

The very next season, Mike LaCoss started 8-0 for the Reds before losing three straight decisions. He finished 1979 with a 14-8 record.

Graves started the 2000 season with an 8-0 record as a reliever for the Reds. He actually pushed his record to 10-2 before dropping his last three decisions, giving him a 10-5 record for the season, all in relief, of course.

Paul Wilson started 7-0 in 2004.Wow, that appeared to be a pretty nice start after being essentially washed up with Tampa Bay. With his past injury history, I guess it's a good thing the Reds didn't act hastily and sign him to a long term contr...uhm...Never mind.

Armstrong was 5-0 in 1990

Tuna-Boat Jack! I remember that start. He thought it gave him the right to make reporters call his agent to "schedule" interviews b/c he was big-time. And as we see a lot, he faded out as quickly as he came into the scene. He ended up 12-9 in 1990 (his only winning season in the bigs) and I am sure his agent's phone wasn't ringing too much after the All-Star break in 1990.

IIRC, he started the All-Star game for the NL and never was quite the same after the midway point of the season.

Armstrong was having a pretty good season at the break, obviously, but didn't he get to start the AS Game only because the top three or four choices had just pitched on Saturday or Sunday or something? I seem to recall that things just lined up right for him to get to be the starting pitcher.

I think that is correct, but I do recall that his stats at the break were right there with the best.

You are right on the wins. Armstrong was 11-3 at the 1990 All-Star break. His last game and win before the July 10 All-Star game was July 5 at Philadelphia (REDS won 9-2). His post break record was 1-6. He ended the year w/ a 3.42 ERA. His ERA totals by year in his 5-year ML career were 5.79, 4.64, 3.42, 5.48 & 4.64. Definitely a 1-year (or perhaps 1/2-year) wonder!

I think it's good that we're talking about Jack Armstrong.

It's a bit of a reality check, an example of what can happen to pitcher throughout the course of the season.

Oh, Bronson will indeed turn out to be a dependable starter, but to EXPECT him to keep putting up the numbers that we're seeing thus far could lead us down the path to disappointment.

Bronson Arroyo is 4-0, this begs the question, when was the last time, if ever, a Reds starter began the season 4-0?

Brooks Lawrence was a starter for the power-laden 1956 Reds and he went 13-0 before losing a decision.

The loss came on July 21 as Roberto Clemente hit a three-run homer in the top of the ninth inning at Crosley to overcome a 3-1 lead and beat the Reds 4-3.

And now, to borrow a phrase ;) , 'This begs the question'...what Reds starting pitcher, if any, has had a better beginning of a season than 13 wins in a row?

Osvaldo Fernandez started out 4-0 in 2001 with the Reds. He ended the year 5-6.

Good mention, gm! Alcala started 5-0 and Zachry started 4-0 for the 1976 Reds. Furthermore, they did it with little or no run support from an everyday lineup of no-names.

(Yes, I'm joking with that last sentence. :D )
