Maybe the GABP hype will keep him away, probably not since CitFed plas almost exactly the same way. Madson will likely get one more start before he heads back to the pen.

I would really like to be able to see him this weekend. The kid is the real deal and Ive been waiting to see him for years. If it werent for some injuries (some baseball related, some not) we probably would have seen him last year.

Hamels' debut could be Friday
The Phillies' top prospect appears to be on the fast track to the big leagues.

One of the most eagerly awaited Phillies debuts in recent history could take place Friday in Cincinnati.

Team officials met yesterday to discuss the future of pitcher Cole Hamels, and there were strong indications they have decided that the prized lefthander will make his next start in the major leagues.

"We're close," assistant general manager Mike Arbuckle said. "It's not going to be much longer, but there are a few moving pieces we have to figure out and people we would have to talk to."

Ryan Madson and Gavin Floyd would be those moving pieces, but it's unclear which one would leave the rotation to make room for the Phillies' top prospect. But it makes sense that Hamels would pitch Friday against the Reds, because he is scheduled to pitch Friday for triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre against Ottawa.

Floyd is scheduled to pitch tomorrow night in the series finale against the Mets. Madson is scheduled to pitch Friday.

The Phillies could keep it simple and move Madson for Hamels, because their days to pitch coincide. Madson is 3-1, but he has a 6.82 earned run average. If he had enough innings to qualify, he would have the second-highest ERA in the National League. In 301/3 innings, he has allowed 49 hits and 16 walks, and has struck out 15. Opponents have hit .371 against him.

Madson also has had two successful seasons in the bullpen, which could be a factor. The Phillies may figure they would be strengthening the rotation and the bullpen at the same time.

Floyd, who also has struggled, isn't a candidate to move to the bullpen. If the Phillies move him, he likely will be sent to Scranton. But because the Phillies had Monday off, they conceivably could pitch Madson tomorrow night since he would have had his normal rest.

Hamels, 22, the team's first-round pick in 2002, has allowed a run, 10 hits and a walk with 36 strikeouts in 23 innings in Scranton. Opponents have hit just .128 against him. He is 14-4 with a 1.43 ERA in his minor-league career.

Hamels has had health issues in the past, but is fine now. The Phillies also have said they would like to see Hamels pitch more innings in the minors to gain more experience.

But Arbuckle said the innings pitched no longer are an issue.

Cole Hamels will make his major league debut Friday against the Reds, the Phillies confirmed on Wednesday.

Hamels is going to take the rotation spot of Ryan Madson, who will move back into the relief role he thrived in the past two years. Hamels is worthy of an immediate pickup even in shallow mixed leagues. It's not very likely that he'll remain healthy enough to throw 130-150 innings over the rest of the season, but he could be one of the NL's better starters right away.

PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia Phillies plan to call up top pitching prospect Cole Hamels to make his major-league debut Friday against the Cincinnati Reds.

The 22-year-old left-hander is 3-1 with a 1.04 ERA in seven minor-league starts this year. He has 65 strikeouts in 43 1/3 innings and opposing batters are hitting just .168 against him.

He has been dominating in his last three starts, all at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Hamels went 2-0 with a 0.39 ERA, 36 strikeouts and just one walk in 23 innings for the Red Barons.

Hamels will take Ryan Madson's spot in the rotation, moving Madson back to the bullpen, Phillies general manager Pat Gillick said.

A first-round pick of the Phillies in the 2002 draft, Hamels has been hampered by injuries the last two seasons and pitched in just 10 games over two years coming into this season. Last year, he missed two months after breaking his pitching hand in a fight in February and was shut down for the year in July with back problems.

But when he hasn't been injured, Hamels has been brilliant. He has gone 14-4 with a 1.43 ERA in 35 minor-league starts with 273 strikeouts.

Madson performed well in the bullpen over the last three seasons, going 15-8 with a 2.94 ERA in 130 games. Madson has struggled at times this year after being moved into the rotation in spring training, going 3-1 with a 6.82 ERA.

The Phillies plan to make a roster move to clear space for Hamels before Friday's game.

Couple things

The Reds have flip-flopped their starters for the first two games of the Phillies series. Elizardo Ramirez will go Friday against Cole Hamels (now official, apparently) and Dave Williams will go Saturday against Jon Lieber (7.85 ERA vs. 6.60). That's an extra day of rest for Williams.

Also, Eric Milton is pitching a simulated game as we speak. Looks like Denorfia, Olmedo and McCracken are swinging the bats against him.

Also on the field, our pal Ramon Ortiz, saying hi to some folks.

Oh, and here's a list of minor leaguers scheduled to be with the Reds for Monday's exhibition in Cooperstown: LHP Chris Michalak, RHP Carlos Guevara, RHP Abe Woody, C Chris Denove, IF Jeff Bannon, IF Luis Bolivar, IF Eric Eymann, OF Alex Sanchez and OF Chris Dickerson.
